Let's post and discuss bad retro products, /vr/. What are the most useless or poorly designed things you've come across, or have the personal misfortune of owning?

I'll start. Look at this piece of shit. A handheld with the world's dumbest form factor a 16:9 screen, and an HDMI output on the back, smack dab in the middle, so if you connect it to your TV, the unit has to remain upright on it's stand or flat on it's face with the cable sticking in the air. who is this made for? At this point you might as well be emulating on a budget tablet.

I kinda want one for my collection of retarded nes gimmicks and famiclone collection of shame.

Speaking of which, i got scammed out of 50 ameribux in the 2000s buying a "GBA Time Machine", a bulky device your gba hooks up to and plays Famicom games and nes games(via an adapter). Thing does have video out which is only reasonable way to use it, kinda defeating the gba usage point. It also requires a gba game be inserted into it to even function to trick the gba into using it. Worse still, if using a Famicom cart, it will actually scratch them via the tight fitting slot. So pretty useless and i should have probably just bought whatever new release game I was going to buy instead before i saw that.

ATI/AMD graphics cards are the only option when you're poor. All the Linux elitists keep pushing Intel/nVidia for the actual performance, but they don't offer anything the average person could afford. So stuck on the red team, you have to put up with drivers so bad that games can't even animate right and the play experience is ruined that you have to rely on your imagination of what is happening. I remember a Radeon HD 7850 was already pushing it for affordability, and it was still so bad I ended out quitting video games; the machine was only salvaged over a decade later to be usable with a 750ti. So imagine having graphics cards that focus on image quality over performance, because you will be looking at a still image. It would be better if they made digital picture frames, and not charge the absurd amounts for their components.

I don't understand the "use your real cartridges" meme. Even if you replace them with a flash cart, it's still stupid.

Served to jam more dirt into your nes then remove, least if your NES is in a basement with an old wood burning stove

If you mean the huge waste of vertical space, yes.
But if you think buttons under the screen was a better layout than buttons to the sides of the screen, you're a fucking ogre.

These fuckers.
>"start button" in the middle of the "N64 controller" is a reset button, so good luck not accidentally resetting your game a couple times
>Famicom cart port is on the bottom of the controller, where the cart will stick very loosely in. Even moving the controller a bit too much will make the game crash due to the cart shaking loose

I eventually just bought a Famicom because this thing was too annoying to deal with

Literally the opposite right now with the state of AMD's open-source drivers being light-years ahead of nvidia's (whose proprietary linux drivers are less functional than their windows drivers).

Honestly thig might be ok if the buttons are well placed. I haven't seen one of these in real life before, and I assume that it is terrible for anyone who isn't a child, but honestly, a single controller that allows you to press all the N64 buttons on one hand? Would be great for certain things. I would definitely try making a new-age version for today's consoles, a single hand having 10 buttons and a d-pad/joystick is a nice setup. This would be a good RPG controller, shame the 64 has almost none of those.

often wish that facebook didn't own oculus, it's a very faustian bargain that we got. Fantastic top of the line consumer-facing VR and actual dev support (fuck you valve, you have infinity dollars just to do one game and promptly fuck off) but it's fucking facebook who would sell your firstborn if it meant more ad revenue.

>>9535405
not a bad idea. Is it one of those emulator boxes, or is it one of those famiclones? The latter had issues for decades with certain expanded cartridges.

>>9535019
Pretty nice for taking notes while playing in my experience. Sucks that they're so much more expensive now though, I got one of this exact model for all of 6 bucks last decade, now I see them for 4 times that amount, and worse if you want a sufami one.

>>9535196
oh shit nostalgia, they used to hock these at my local shopping mall for 10 bucks. Friend bought one and that was our first time playing contra. Also we spent time marvelling at what the cart slot might be for since being kids living in the sticks without internet, we had no idea that famicom existed.

The analog stick is mapped to your wrist. Note the mild strain of moving your wrist fully upward or downward, now hold it for as long as you want to move forward in Mario or zelda, or look around in Turok.

ATi was superior to jewvida until SLi made them competitive in the early 2000s. Cards like the 9800pro and X800XT were legendary for their time. Drivers weren't an issue as there were plenty of people offering 3rd party drivers.

ok so they're fucked for analog, but if that thing under the thumb is a d-pad then you might be in business for a one-handed controller for RPGs and such. Again though, shame it's not an RPG system.

All the reports still have nVidia's offerings miles ahead with less optimized drivers.

>>9536228
Most of those actually good drivers were made by the community well after the card's relevance. I was there at the time when they were new and ATi was pretty much there once you ran out of budget for a graphics adapter to be a placeholder until you could actually upgrade.

>>9537583
Make sure the die is able to make some contact with the heatsink. Over time, the shim may be raised due to the compound they used, so you mat need some large thermal pad to maintain contact.

I am out of touch not by choice. I'm not done with PCs, they have just priced me out. I really enjoyed PC gaming, but even the generic poverty AMD option expects a certain level of income. I hope to win the Megamillions to partake in the fun again.
