Game Center CX, surprisingly, is something that Nintendo really keeps close tabs on, given how goddamn Iwata himself has appeared on the show, claiming that Arino and company have been important factors for the "education" of the general populace about classic games. There's also the fact they've produced tens of Nintendo Network exclusive episodes (though lots of them aren't distributed anymore nor globally, though lol) and the fact that Sakurai adores Game Center CX and the Kacho. The show is a very interesting weapon in Nintendo's marketing arsenal, a connection that arises, naturally, from how the Nintendo brand is pretty much synonymous with classic gaming, however I can't see such efforts delving too far from software efforts that Nintendo deems important for the "retro" side they want to push on customers at times.

If anything they should have Arino get visited by Iwata and other Nintendo people more often.

>>942818

I'd love to chat with you guys about Gaki, but I fear that /tv/ will blast us to hell if we try to chat about Japanese tv in there. And the audience would be somewhat different than the users here, which may degrade conversation a bit...

That's true alright, but it's going to take a few days if we wait for importers with that. I was more referring to the whole day 0 upload experience and general attitude towards digital media in Japanese culture, we'd expect links for the album to have surfaced by now or to have it available on digital marketplaces since day zero, but it seems both those things aren't too common for japanese media, anecdotically speaking.

By the way, has anyone in the thread gotten their hands on the album yet? How is it and what trading card did you get? What I've seen of them is super cool, wish they were included with every print of the disc after the first. I want an Arino Card :<

In the press conference release we made, there a whopper of an error at the end. Arino actually says he wants to avoid mistakes, not have a year full of them. I was tired and rushed and beefed it.

>Can’t get it. That one neither.

I know that you decided not to change this line before, but I do believe that it's incorrect. In the second sentence, "I can't get" is implied. Since "can't" already expresses the negative, using "neither" makes it an improper double negative. If Arino had spoken a complete sentence, your translation would've been the clearly wrong, "I can't get that one neither." The line should be like this:

Can't get it. That one, either.

If the comma messes with the flow, then you can ditch it.

It isn't. In Sonic challenge he fooled everybody by pretending to play while the demo was playing and after it was over, he progressed like a snail ever since.

The only part that's scripted is when they show him a cue card that tells him to say "I think I can clear this before dinnertime", "This is only a Famicom so it'll be a piece of cake" etc. right before the challenge actually starts.

I really think that "uprising" doesn't make much sense here, when the "This "one guy" has three guys" at least makes sense as a punny joke. This is one of those cases where it'll be necessary to have one of those dreaded "translator's notes", but if you make it super succinct it'll work.

Well, 'Ikki' is basically a challenge only, so the segments will mainly be extra length and timing issues only. I was thinking of three 20 minute scripts, depending on if a clean cut can be made.

It all really comes down to the content; I spent an hour researching the Battle of Dan-no-Ura for the ending speech of 'Genji and Heiki Clans'. Something like the three parts DKC 2 I could likely do in 1.5 months, if I had a checker for names, etc.

If it looks weird to people, I'm fine with it being removed. Virtually nobody is going to complain about it. As far as I know, these are the standard punctuation rules for quotes ending in the middle of a sentence:

Incomplete sentence in quotes = end with a comma before the quotes close

Complete sentence in quotes = end with a comma instead of a period before the quotes close

Quote ending in an ellipsis = add a comma after the ellipsis and before the quotes close (admittedly looks weird)

Quote ending in a ? or ! = add a comma after the quotes

Good eye, thanks.

285-286
These are at places I think the subs should be cut at. He doesn't trail off, he just has a pause, so an ellipsis would be out of place, IMO.

As for the screen text, it only gets used when it doesn't match what the narrator/person speaking says, and I think matching the punctuation used in the Japanese is best. I went through and cut where the ST was (more or less) parroting what was being said by the Narrator.

Additionally, in the screens where the King appears and the Narrator is speaking, I think it's better to just overlay the Narrator's subtitles over the text, but I'll leave them in the script.
(basically 'just because, but if they're a pain I can cut them)

>>947872
That was changed after a previous suggestion, but now that I think of, it's easier to read and understand where subs go the way you wrote it (I think the previous edit was mainly about the punctuation I had).

Also, for when I've finished the second half, would people prefer having one script with the full version (with the newest version of the first half being used, of course). Or separate halves? After making them lose so much money, he now has the galls to not only demand to be paid for his work, but has also established an online hugbox/smear campaign trying to paint his boss as the bad guy for trusting his skills and not checking his work, presenting the entire thing as "translators translate because they love doing it, and should be excused for their mistakes".

To be fair, whoever 1) does not proof-read a larger scale translation project by a new translator and 2) does not use an editor on a larger scale translation project by a new translator really deserves to get shit on to some degree. That is just horrendous business sense and essentially proves the guy isn't worth doing business with if he just turns shit in with the client without checking it over in some shape or form. I mean, look at us. We're a small group with tiny projects in comparison (80-page book? That's pretty damn large), and we essentially are staffed as follows:

1 translator

A TON of editors in the form of the entire thread

Proofreading and editing is the most important part of the translation right next to the actual translation. I honestly feel like taking LC's side here. If you're given a translation project in parts (a good chunk of it WEEKS in advance), then hand it in to your client and suddenly it turns out it's crappy, you have nobody to blame but yourself, because you had AMPLE time to figure that out from the first chunk of the translation. Not to mention:

>it was clear to me you are not qualified for this translation (you don’t understand the meaning of “hontai" in this context? Seriously?). And most importantly you should have realized this yourself.

How the fuck do you realize yourself you're making errors in your translation when the only thing you have to check with is yourself? That's a retarded stance. Translators need other translators to check over their work, simply because of the nature of the work. It has to be a group effort, otherwise, shit's going to fall apart.

Ironically, this might also give a decent explanation for the troubles SA-GCCX had with LC, what with the whole "not coming with a checker" business.

As a GCCX related tangent, apparently, Nakayama now works at a hospital according to zari-gani, who found that out from the trading card she got with her soundtrack CD.

And who are you? Hobbyists doing this in your spare time. This isn't how the professional world works.

If your toilet gets clogged, and you call a plumping service to get it fixed, you're not going to get 5 plumbers on the door so 4 of them can stand around and check if the main plumber does the job right.
When you get hired to do a job, and claim you're qualified to do it, you're not to make mistakes. You get paid because of your qualifications, you don't get to be so bad at your job your boss has to hire someone else to look over your work and fix the mistakes before giving it to the client.

>How the fuck do you realize yourself you're making errors in your translation when the only thing you have to check with is yourself?

No, it's not. If you're reading a text in a language not your own, and there are bits you're not quite sure what means, you should understand that you're not qualified to translate said text.

Two words: Probation period. That is where the aforementioned plumbers prove they know what they're doing, so when you call a plumber, you either get one that has passed that period (and hence has proved he knows what he's doing) or two, one that has passed the period and one who hasn't, and the one that has makes sure the one that hasn't doesn't fuck up.

LC had not proved he knows what he's doing to that company (to my knowledge), and going off vague "credentials" or "qualifications" is business suicide, considering how easy some qualifications are to obtain while still staying completely ignorant. He should have had an experienced translator from the company check his work over, and blindly trusting qualifications is a stupid thing to do, because in the "professional world", qualifications don't mean shit beyond a rough estimate on a base experience level.

No translation firm does this, because translation firms hire purely based on credentials. LC could only end up being assigned work he couldn't do if he was exaggerating his resume. Anyone who's ever worked in translation will assume that upon reading LC's post, and make a mental note to never, ever hire him. Making that post was the worst possible thing he could've done to his career.

>>953674

It wasn't about cred. They didn't want to endorse LC's version, because he'd already failed their translation test. They were reasonably assuming that his version would be substandard (and it is, just not enough for /vr/ to care). They had no way of knowing that he'd stick around doing releases, rather than doing one or two and then losing interest (which is honestly what happens to most projects inspired by drama). Continuing to do shows they planned to do for their fans was just acting rationally. If they change their minds, it'll only be because their own fans ask them to do so.

Rule of thumb I use in both my personal and professional life and it's never let me down: if I hear someone wants to "get in contact with me" and my contact information is easily available in several public places (which it is) then I just wait and let them contact me.

As a short-time goon, the way I see it is that you can avoid the banhammer as long as you're not an idiot. Keep proper spelling and grammar, and for the love of god don't throw any sort of "net speak" in. They hate that. Also, make sure your post actually contributes to the discussion beyond a simple "I agree" or the like. As long as you stay smart, you should be fine. All the bans and probations I've seen so far were mostly dumb people.

I don't know about SA's banhammer practices, but they're notorious for charging separately to access pretty basic functions of the site. AFAIK, you can also pay to prank other people, forcing THEM to have to pay to get unpranked (like with unwanted avatars and maybe other stuff, I think).

Yeah, you need to pay for changing your avatar, being able to search the forums, being able to private message other users, being able to search through the forum archives among a bunch of other shit.

And yes, you can buy avatars and custom titles for other people to fuck with them.

Reasoning for this is mostly that SA is apparently run on the server equivalent of bread sticks and PVA glue because if everyone had access to all this shit from the get-go the forums would explode.

Probably a side effect of using fucking 14 year old server software.

Ex-goon here, the banhammer stuff is totally true, especially in the games section where unless it's universally said to be shit, you can't actually say bad things about a game without getting a probation (a ban but with a time limit) or an outright ban for trolling, even if it's your honest opinion.

>>955120
There's so many people known for having too much disposable income and nothing to spend it on over there that if you see someone with an mlp avatar over there you can't be sure if they're a brony or not at first due to at least two different people on different boards who buy and re-buy pony avatars for posters they don't like.

Kakaricho, please do this as soon as possible. In whatever word processor you're using, you'll probably need to disable the "Auto Correct" function for ellipses to prevent them from becoming the single-character form. It looks bad in the pastebin, and it could cause problems in the subtitles. You really need to standardize every last one of them to THREE INDIVIDUAL DOTS WITHOUT SPACES.

Maybe you can record that and the SMB rebroadcast right after it on the outside chance that we might want to sub them in the future. Despite the length, the quiet patches probably make them not too complicated. I figure that SA might get around to those as well, but it can't hurt to keep our options open.
