My favourite weird license. It's not even a bad game and you'd never know it was licensed unless you were told.
It's based on an action figure set

started playing it a couple of weeks ago and found it pretty, but didn't get far and stopped playing, what's wrong with it before I investing more time on it.
Does it get worse gameplay wise or is it just a poor adaptation of the book?

oh god, biggest rent regret ever, I thought it would be a fun action game with sexy girls, I saw Konami on the title so i figured it would be good, but the controls...my god the controls. I don't even remember how bad it played because i blocked it out of my mind, but I remember my utter disgust towards the controls, even as a dumb kid with no taste I knew this was unredeemable dogshit, like not even the cgi cutscenes were worth the rent. I've never rejected a game so fast in my life. Maybe disc 2 was better? fuck no, just as bad!
I still regret renting that, I could've just rented doa2 again.

Years later I found out it was also a poor adaptation of the action figures apparently. How do you fuck up this bad? imagine being a fan of this toy line, you finally get an adaptation, and this is what you have to play with? ugh. I feel sorry for those fans.
The only reason I remember this game after all these years is because of just how bad it was, it's probably not even that bad, it just left a really, really bad taste in my mouth, more than Red Ninja, how did you manage to do that. Why did I rent this...
I think I first heard of it on Toonami, my memory is a bit fuzzy on that but if that was the case, fuck you, Tom, I liked the fat Tom better.

I have no idea what P is on about, he Hobbit is a pretty cool game. The only part that sucks is the stealth part at the end of level 2 where you need to sneak around the trolls, but that's such a minor part of the game.

It follows the book fairly closely, the only major departure is an extended Laketown sequence that's mostly just to introduce Bard as a character to the player.

Basically all 90s Simpsons games were weird as fuck, but this one takes the cake for me. They basically reskinned a random existing game, and since the subject matter and setting were completely inappropriate they just decided to use a basically minor character as the titular main character and stretch the notion and vague implications of a "fun house" to shrug off the nonsense.

The irony is that it is still hands down the BEST western-developed game carrying the Simpsons license released during the 90s.

eh? I thought Interplay just got the license and made a new game, I didn't know it was a port. but at the same time the game's basic design was really bad, all the dungeons looked samey, and the AI for your companions was really bad and they got themselves permakilled easily, and there was a bug, where weapons that got to a certain strength actually rolled over so like the best weapons in the game actually LOWERED your strength stat, if your base strength + weapon strength went over 100 it rolled over back to 0. So you basically couldn't use Anduril, because it's strength was 96.

It was just a horrible mess.

It was very innovative, with npcs that lived their own lives and acted independently of your actions.
Unfortunately "lived their own lives" could mean "walk into the forest and drown themselves in a river, making it impossible for the player to finish the game since you needed them for something", so it's mostly remembered as a needlessly frustrating game. There's a reason this innovation didn't catch on.

I'd assume it's precisely the mix of fidelity to the source material in terms of content with an arguably misguided "gamified" visual style.

I totally get how some people may actually like it, but fresh off the visual solemnity and elegance of the LotR feature films, getting a Bilbo-if-he-Mario adaptation of The Hobbit (actually acknowledged as such by the developers themselves) was an understandable shock for others. The developers' rationale (about this particular piece of the source material being more "lighthearted") was solid enough when considered in the vacuum, but given the commercial point of the project was piggybacking on the mainstream popularity gained by the films, this was hardly the most appropriate approach.

Nah
Anyone who read the Hobbit before the films came out would disagree with you. The attempt to bring the Hobbit in line with Jackson’s darker films is misguided as fuck, as evidence by the three absolute shitshows we got in the past decade.

What’s more iirc Sierra didn’t have the rights to adapt Jackson’s films, EA did. They bought the rights to adapt the book from someone who obtained them perviously, and thus had to distance themselves from the Jackson films for legal reasons regardless.

>> No.9532761

>>9532729
True, if you expect Peter Jackson it's probably disappointing. But I think it captured the atmosphere and the feel of the book quite well. Some segments, especially Smaug's lair was exactly how I imagined it when I read the book. The Mirkwood level was also great.
Good synchro, good soundtrack. It's a love letter to the book.
Fully recommend this game to other bookfags.

I mean let's not go crazy here, the LotR trilogy is a masterpiece. But regardless, Sierra didn't have the rights to use that license and I don't think it's wrong to use a different style for the game.
The real question is, does it play well?

>>9532758
That's an entirely different issue, that was making the Hobbit more like LotR. Jackson totally could've done a true to the original Hobbit movie, he just chose not to. You can totally make The Hobbit's story work with LotR's visuals, we know that because the parts of the first movie that are trying to be The Hobbit instead of something else are actually good.
