What do you think about Japanese-made roguelikes? What is your favorite one?

shiren in general feels clunky to me.

The sprite to screen ratio is off and the tile-movement bothers me.

They are decent, but consoles couldn't really handle making randomized dungeons so everything in them is pre-designed. Add in the fortune teller and the result being that trying to do naked runs feels more like pulling the arm on a slot machine than playing a real roguelike.

I appreciate them for what they are, but they also popularized the grind roguelike with persistent progression elements which has now almost taken over the whole genre. So I hate them a little in that regard.

I have only played the first Shiren game but I love it. It is hard in that it asks a lot of patience from the player, but you are given a lot of options for approaching an encounter and exploring a floor and it's very easy to lose days of work on equipment with an unlucky trap or a death. But it still feels fair. The music and atmosphere as a whole is kino. I want to check out Shiren 2 and the first Torneko game if I ever get around to it.

I hate the DS translation though and what it did to a lot of enemy names. The new content though looks interesting, but I just can't past the translation and the changes they made to the graphics.

I'm mostly a fan of the Pokemon ones.
"Pokemon, but with actual difficulty" is a really easy sell for me. The first game also had a great story. I'm planning on replaying Red and then Sky soon and I'm looking forward to it.

I also quite enjoy Elona, but that's less of a roguelike and more of a psilocybin trip.

Same man, I've been trying to get that apk for ages. If I'm ever going to play Shiren 5 on android, it'll be by switch emulation through Skyline. I wish there was some way to transfer saves because I have a 120+ hour vita save.

Been playing the incomplete translation patch of Shiren DS2. The game's getting real with Edge of the Abyss. It's the staple no carry in no items identified dungeon.

Both of these are good, can't say enough about Baroque's atmosphere and soundtrack.

Azure Dreams is fun when it comes to more traditional mystery dungeon games. When it comes to less traditional, I like Wolkenkratzer. It's a JP-only somewhat jank 3D fighting game with rogue and RPG elements. It can get pretty engrossing, especially knowing if you die it's game over.

>Azure Dreams is fun when it comes to more traditional mystery dungeon games.
Azure Dreams is great but it leans harder into being unbeatable without grinding than pretty much any other Mystery Dungeon like.

True, probably to stretch out the tower time since there's a lot of story elements in town. At least it's pretty easy to break the game though.

I never felt like Shiren was too much rng based. I get it that it isn't DCSS or Nethack, but it translates the appeal of those games in a much simpler and sometimes more enjoyable way.
Do you think Shiren is too much luck based if you don't want to grind and make it a roguelite? What do you guys think of the Primordial Chasm?

The staple no carry in all items unidentified dungeons is peak shiren gameplay. Usually all the metaprogression stuff if for newbies to beat the main game or have fun in post game carry in dungeons.

It felt like a real slog to me, expected Shiren but with pokemons, and I got a streamlined game with no challenge at all.

>> No.9518858

I tried shiren a lil bit on the vita. Seems alright, but I kinda need a dragon quest fix right now and I already played basically everyting.
Should I try torneko snes or ps1? Which is more fun?

>> No.9519041

>>9518202
I can't speak for it since I barely played it, all my real testing was on MD2 shiren the wanderer. But from my experience from other games in the series they feel very similarly designed. Floors, item layouts and initial enemy spawns are all pre-made maps that the game cycles through yhen can get different adjustments like weather depending.

>>9518767
This has been my experience as well. Most don't have the tension a real roguelike has so it just turns it into endless grinding in semi random dungeons. I had fun with Etrian Mystery Dungeon for a while but am losing interest as it gets further in the early difficultly has wained and now it more feels just grundy again but with random bullshit like an enemy that makes you throw good gear where you can never get it again. Or requiring certain classes because they're the only ones who can ear certain obstacles and if you don't have them, get grinding!

I won't go on a rant here but progression elements in my opinion really ruin roguelikes, which is sad because it's the main thing they all seem to have these days.

>>9518858
I would pick a more traditional RPG in that case.

For all it's worth, this tier list I found puts the snes version in S tier. I've only ever played the snes game but I found it to be fun and a good introduction to the mystery dungeon franchise. It's quite linear and only has 3 dungeons so it won't take too much of your time compared to other mystery dungeons.

His whole teir list makes no sense to me. I can see praising original MD2 a lot since it's one of the more roguelikish of the games in the series. But then putting the Pokémon games in A and the DS port of MD2 in B makes no sense at all,or I don't know what he actually thinks is good about the series. To me both versions of MD2 are decent in their different ways, the Pokémon MD games are some of the most painfully boring and dull things I've ever played. You don't unlock anything close to good dungeons until after the super sluggish story mode and even then they're not great.

And them he puts Etrian Mystery Dungeon in the worst spot, when even though it's not great it's one of the few games in the series with any real difficulty.

My guess is that the person who made the chart mostly digs the Pokémon games but knew that any tier list that didn't have the originals at the top would get eviscerated.

I never played PMD due to its focus on the story and lower difficulty so I can't speak on that. This more recent tier list I found seems alot better. The only thing I don't get here is the high placement of Shiren 3.

>> No.9519382

>>9519351
Well I mean tier lists are tier lists, they're just a given person's opinion. So it's more that looking at the list I don't understand jis opinion. They're in the same series, but the Pokémon games are very, very different from MD2. And the only real difference between the sfc version and the DS port other than added content is the original is more punishing in certain ways which mostly matters when doing naked runs. So it feel to me like what he really enjoys are the Pokémon style ones (which is a fine preference to have) and doesn't particularly like the DS port of MD2 which is likely the one he played. But he knows that to make a teir list he would be expected to put the original up top.

It's more about how pointless I think tier lists are in general than this one in particular though.

>> No.9519387

>>9519382
True that. I like these tierlists as a fun novelty, but I think judging games can be done in more effective ways rather than simply placing them in tiers.

A few week ago I was testing switch emulators and played that Chocobo Mystery dungeon remake and it was bad. Like there was no challenge and holds your hand non stop. Is this game just bad, or it "gets good 5h in"?

Shiren 1 on SNES is a classic and 5 is great, even bought it on premiere. Not really interested in Pokemon franchise, Gonna try Torneko some time soon
