Phantasy Star I has a glitch in it that freezes the game if you save at the wrong time. I'd stay away. If you have a Wii, Virtual Console would be your best bet.

If you have a PS3 or 360 I say get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Because it sadly doesn't have 4 which is a step up from 3 (3 was made by a different company and felt really out of place). Also it has a few other really great games.

From what I remember there was a special chip that makes emulating it really hard. At least for the SNES version. Which is why it's not on Nintendo VC. I never played the GBA one so I can't give you anything on that.

All the mario games were pretty decent. Had extra levels and stuff which I thought was awesome.

There's also Mother 1 + Mother 2. Japan only but still pretty good.

The major problem people have is the sound quality. And I understand where they are coming from since the SNES had one of the best sound chip ever made. But I agree the remakes of the SNES games are worth it if you don't have a Wii/WiiU (for the VC). And the problem with the Final Fantasy I remake is that they took out things that made it really difficult. Like taking out charges and put MP. Or having your character move to the next target after the enemy has died. Some might call it an improvement which I agree on the later games. But if you take that out of Final Fantasy I it really takes most of the difficulty out of it.

Heres the scoop from what I remember. I have the links saved on my desktop but i dont have access to it for a few days. There are several remakes of PS1 and 2 I believe.

There is full 3D ( i think) remake of one and two on ps2. Japan only release but I think translation patches are available.

There is also a full remake for mobile phones released in japan that is much truer to the original. Hi-res sprites and what not. There is also a translation for that, but the problem is finding an emulator or any program to run it. I actually think I found something to run it but I cant remember where.

Sorry for the fragmented thoughts here, it's been a while and I remember only bits in pieces. I havent played them myself

I'm actually playing it as we speak. The only upside of it is that you can play Phantasy Star on the go. But there is no IV. And the music sounds terrible, very tinny, and with II is not that bad but on III, it ruins that town background music I like so much. And with 1 its so bad that I have to play with the volume off. Its that bad.

Also there is a slight chance that you will freeze up in the middle of saving on ps1. I never ran into that issue but that doesn't mean you won't

Your options include, aside from standard emulation which you should be doing, Sega Genesis Collection, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, downloadable versions on consoles, and downloadable versions through Steam/Amazon/GamersGate/DotEmu.

The GBA collection is alright, but the lack of view space can be a nuisance, particularly in the sadistic labyrinths of Phantasy Star 2, which are made much harder with the diminished view of your surroundings.

Start with Phantasy Star IV. Just emulate it on your favorite device. If you like the series, then go ahead buy them however the fuck you want. Not that supporting Sega would do you much good. It certainly won't get us a Phantasy Star V, or even representation in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
