Nice music, nice backgrounds. Too bad the gameplay was crap.

>> No.9496526

it seems like the only way the devs really understood how to iterate on the basic gameplay was to come up with increasingly annoying bullshit.

>Too bad the gameplay was crap.
You mean "too bad the devs made the game harder to combat weekend rentals, thus messing with the game's legacy!"
Looking at you Ed, you fucked with Ecco and Chakan!

Still a great game though, but could have been remembered much more fondly.

why was the version for windows 95 so fucking cool?

>> No.9496854

The gameplay is basically metroid, it was probably just too hard for you because you skipped reading the clues that the animals give you.

Same with comix zone

the maze portion of ecco is a mostly reasonable challenge, that's not really the issue.

nta but the clues are cryptic as fuck. You need psychic abilities to figure that shit out.

As opposed to what, especially at the time?

I dare you to actually look at the genesis catalogue. Or any other console at the time. There's a good but of shit for the shovel but you don't like to think so for some reason.

No, this is the jump you are supposed to be able to make and is perfectly doable. The other way involves a hidden passage to bypass for people who suck and can't make the jump.

I hate the enemy respawning. Could have been a comfy game if they weren't obsessed with difficulty in that era. Mario 64 style water levels would have been a better fit for this game. I think it goes downhill after the saving the other dolphin levels.

You have to do the dolphin rescue quests, I forget which does which but both are super handy. One gives you blast sonar for killing for a distance, the other let's you permakill enemies if you double tap when charging. You'll know it works because there's a sound effect and little animation of a swirl of energy going into him.

>>9498014
Considering I have taught people here in depth how to do the jump, I'd say the opposite is true.

I played this in 90s and the last level was game ending horseshit then same as now.

there was no point to be so aggressive with enemy respawning, they don't have to disappear permanently but for godsake just give a little breathing room. like playing ninja gaiden underwater.

You get the ability to permakill enemies in the first couple levels.

Biggest issue by far, is certain puzzles needing precise positioning and Ecco loves to turn wide so you spend a good while trying to position him right and wasting air

Solving clues in Ecco is really part of the charm.
Me and my friend could spend weeks coming up with theories on that shit. Best time.
Although, I admit, we barely made it to the end, he wasn't really good at it and I did all the brain work for him whenever I could.
