ITT: Retro games you enjoyed for their atmosphere/aesthetic and not the actual gameplay.

Xardion. Has some of the most imaginative scifi concepts and lore, but the game is as basic as SNES platformers get.

I REALLY want to like the gameplay, but it's very difficult for me.

Never played it, but the gameplay being barebones is more or less the same complaint I have with TY. It doesn't really try out anything new.
I think it's always interesting to try out lesser known games from smaller studios. Even they're not nearly as good as any high-profile games, they can provide unique experiences that make them worth trying out imo.

While better than the 32X title in every conceivable way, the gameplay's still unremarkably simplistic.
Having said that i absolutely adore the artstyle, fluid animations and music this game has, always revisit it at least once a year, and wish i could find more games (retro or not) that have this exact same style.

Excellent visuals, sound effects, music score, and cutscenes, but the core gameplay mechanics & level design - ie. the “meat” of a video game - are utterly mediocre. Add to that the game's excessive difficulty - and difficult for stupid reasons like raptors constantly lunging at you from both directions, not difficult from clever level design. Maybe a ROM hack can salvage it.

N64 was my last console, never heard of this game. YouTube'd it and it looks comfy and fun af. I might play it... What was wrong with the gameplay?

6th gen platformers are so fucking bad

Wouldn't say there's a lot "wrong" with it per se, it's just a really bare-bones platformer. The levels are indeed comfy, though.
