What shmups have you been playing recently /vr/?

I've been playing through the PC Engine Soldier games (Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, Soldier Blade), but they're not really that great imo. They just feel too long, too sterile and generic, and just very low energy. Super Star Soldier in particular just feels very rough and unbalanced, but Final Soldier and Soldier Blade are both really easy.

Yeah they're not that hard, but they offer a decent challenge to newbie shmup players.

I stopped for a while. Last ones I played were Detana Twinbee Collection on Saturn and Einhander before it. My favorites are still Keio Flying Squadron, Lords of Thunder (SEGA CD version), and Android Assult: Revenge of Bari-Arm, followed by a handful on TurboGrafx CD and PS1.

Yeah that's basically every PC Engine shmup. At least Star Soldier has caravan modes.

The only shmup I ever really fell in love with was Judgement Silversword. I’ve tried a number of other popular recommendations but I really don’t jive with the style of most of them, there’s a simplicity to JS that I really appreciate versus something like a Cave shooter where there’s just moving shit everywhere on the screen. Any recommendations that might be in line with my preferences?

Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings (Sonic Wings is better as it has the second loop). The Arcade version is even better, but the SNES version is a surprisingly great port and has an additional character that has a unique playstyle.

I would check out Psikyo games, such as Sonic Wings (Arcade), Sengoku Ace, Gunbird, Strikers 1945. You can also try out something like 1944 or 19XX. All of these have pretty simple systems, but are still very challenging games with some brutal patterns.

If you want something really simple, check out some of the PCE shooters, like the Soldier trilogy (Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, Soldier Blade), Nexzr, Blazing Lazers, etc. Gate of Thunder is also excellent, although it's less beginner friendly.

I know it's a little new for this board, but I've been playing a lot of Revolver360 Re:Actor lately.
It's a pretty good twist on the genre, really adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay.
In all seriousness, it's probably my favorite shmup.

R-type final 2

By the way i want to talk about twinbee lore . Any twinbee fans here ? Why they never told us who is mother of every protagonist ? Or it's just because it's not important for gameplay anyway. Just like no one know who is mother of all browser sons . Dr.cinnamon are father of Annamon and donnamon. Annamon are father of Light . Donnamon are father of Pastel . Then Annamon and Donnamon are disappear from the lore by no reason. And no one talk about their wife . Some source from the series say Annamon and twinbee come from planet soltias . What i though dr.cinnamon create twinbee

>(any pararrels to new beus beside rage4 are intended)
Streets of Rage 4, Fight 'n Rage, Ninja Warriors One Again, Pocky Rocky Reshrined, Blazing Chrome, Infernax, Cuphead all good stuff
Anything by M2 Shot Triggers on Nintendo Switch is golden.

>How do you would resurrect the genre?
Some combo of genres/mechanics. shump with X . An indie will succeed sooner or later and create a case like Isaac, and reinvent the genre all together.
I dunno how to do it, but I can bet the new great shmup won't be an autoscroller 40min long that you play for scores.

>Secondary question, given the ability would you actually do or it's better off ded? (any pararrels to new beus beside rage4 are intended)
I would, because if my exemple comes to reality old shumps will become the roguelike vs roguelite

The Sky Force series has mostly gotten it right:
>Default game mode is stage select
>Each stage have sub goals of scoring/survival/collecting that earns you medals
>You keep unlocking higher and higher difficulties with more and more sub goals
It encourages the mastering of the game (through addictive medal collecting) but in bite sized chunks, with the full playthrough being kept as the final challenge.

Unfortunately Sky Force also has RPG systems in place, though it doesn't take long until you've maxed out everything.

I've been on a NES Gun Smoke kick lately.
No where near as hard or as good looking as the arcade version, and having to press A and B simultaneously is a bit of a pain compared to having three dedicated buttons, but it's still fun as hell. (and for the life of me I can't find the hidden wanted poster in the first stage, I keep having to buy it from the merchant)

Yet Sky Force sucks and so do rpg elements. I don't need a game to drip feed me rewards to keep me playing. Give me good gameplay and I'll go for survival 1cc, and naturally try to get better....if the score system is good then even better. But little trophies and unlockables are annoying for me.

The first half of the game has to be played like a dadshmup; learn precisely where to be/what to shoot so you chain every single substage, and destroy all parts on all bosses up through at least the dragon. The secret chain after Kotetsu/during Golets is mandatory.

Vulcan is the most important weapon to upgrade and ideally should be above 25 by the final level. Homing is considered essential for a particular phase of the Xiga fight, but if you nail everything beforehand it's possible to speed kill him with your straight shot (requires pretty strict routing during the phase in question, though).

This 100% works for a Stage 2 route 1cc. I moved on before I got the Stage 4 route but it was definitely doable with similar strats.
