This thread is for the discussion of retro doujin games. Which ones have you been playing lately?
This one just barely skates by the retro cut-off line here, but I just beat Rosenkreuzstilette yesterday. Very fun game and a great homage to Mega Man, although some of the level design is directly lifted from MM2 and 4. I'm now replaying it as Grolla and it's tough as shit. The Cross Wall is kicking my ass.

Kind of venturing into /jp/ territory, but I played a lot of the Touhou games in the mid-2000's. My favorite one ended up being TH04: Lotus Land Story for PC98. I remember watching tons of gameplay videos of stuff like MegaMari and Rozenkreuzstilette but never got a chance to play them.

Not sure if it qualifies but I also really want to play Rusty at some point, sadly I don't currently have a way of emulating PC98 games anymore.

You can buy Rosenkreuzstilette on Steam if you're interested, though I'm sure it and MegaMari are easily found elsewhere anyways. I've tried Touhou many times, but I always get my ass handed to me. Shoot-em-ups just aren't my genre. I respect them, I'm not gonna shit on them just because I'm not good at them, but goddamn am I not good at them.
As a huge Castlevania fan, Rusty looks pretty cool. I'm gonna have to try that one out sometime.

Rozenkreuzstilette isn't really a Touhou game, though it might share some of the appeal. An updated version got re-released on Stream.

How so?

I don't emulate on PC anymore but on smart TV/TV boxes, the ones I own currently don't have the power to run PC98 or Sharp X68000 games, for whatever reason some of them are also a little more cumbersome to setup than whatever emulator I was using back then, which I think was Anex86?

The best ways to emulate PC98 in 2022 is Neko Project II Kai which is a Retroarch core.
If there is a single benefit to Retroarch is that it's ported to almost everything. If the OS of your smart TV is Android-based, then you might have some luck running PC98 games on it.
Dosbox X gave me better performance compared to Anex, but it takes a little longer to configure.
Anex was the go to PC98 emulator for a while, but it's not the case anymore since better options exist.

I've replayed Lethal Crisis lately, it's still hard as fuck
Shame that a lot of developers have disappeared from the face of earth, and lots of games become forgotten. At least soujinengi is getting an official release now

If you think Grolla mode is hard, the sequel starring Freudia will kick your ass.

I honestly feel like doujin hasn't had soul in at LEAST the past ten years, the 90's and 00's honestly felt like a special time for it

MegaMari kinda sucks due to unprecise controls. Baquartet X is where it's at. Not sure if it's retro though.
