I'm eyeballing one of those 6-gorillion-games-in-one handhelds that can only play NES games (mostly clones and bootlegs). For 8 bucks and a free controller for the second player it's not so bad of a deal, but I'm containing myself because this month I've already spent enough for a new Celestron telescope.

anbernig's customer support is absolute dogshit even by chink company standards. You're absolutely fucked if anything goes wrong. They'll either ignore you, tell you nothing is wrong, or offer you back $30 on a $100+ lemon. Most recently I've gotten a RG353M and Miyoo Mini. Both are nice. Miyoo Mini with OnionOS is peak convenience. I have an RG505 on order, waiting to ship. Wish I had bought an RP3+ instead, but no one did a direct comparison until after the order had processed, so I got fucked. Kind of pissed about it, will probably chuck it in a drawer and never look at it out of sheer frustration. Going to start playing Ys Books I & II tonight, but that will be on my MiSTer, not a handheld. Mostly been playing arcade games on the handhelds.

An immediate question I have for anyone familiar with arkos on these things, can i access some kind of settings for standalone emulators? The n64 ones run way better but I cant use my hotkeys while using them or any other features.

And sometimes I am gripping the left side too hard when doing D-Pad movements and hold the volume buttons and fuck with the sound. I would stick to everything PS1 below on the Linux side with JELOS and use Android for everything else aka for N64 etc.

Finally tracked down the googledoc that has all the handhelds and their capabilities, and yeah, it’s not looking too good for those devices. When they get to N64, PSP, Dreamcast, and Saturn, they both scored B-B+ which is a bit vague. Still, love their portability and design so I’m gonna do a bit more research on them before I pull the trigger. The metal casing for the RG353M and supposedly sturdy buttons make it particularly appealing, but I’m curious why it didn’t get better scores on the Dreamcast and psp as those are usually pretty easy to emulate.

What about games that use X and Y, like the SNES? When I get my RP3+, I plan on using the touchscreen or R and L buttons for start/select

>> No.9468740

The fucked up thing is I actually ended up really liking the Start button placement on the RP3 much to my surprise. I'm talking more than I like it on the face of a handheld for some fucked up reason that I don't understand. It's the Select button that gets me, I basically have to dismount my entire right hand to reliably hit it without also hitting Start.

Just me personally since I know I'm a weirdo for liking the Start position to begin with, I would've liked the Select button placed just right of L1 in the same way that Start is just left of R1.

I have an RG353P and think it's awesome. Haven't noticed anything about the refresh rate but I think you're talking about that autist Taki Udon video.

I use mine for up to PS1 on the Linux side with JELOS and only use Android for light N64 (which is ok at best).

I have an RG351V that i only use for Gameboy and Gameboy Color which is mad comfy.

However I've taken the phone pill and got a better mid tier phone this year from my phone carrier and plan on just using my phone plus a USB C controller going forward for anything N64 and up since the performance for what you get is bs plus they constantly try to recycle shit every 6 months.

Anyway, I still think for the average person, a Miyoo Mini, RG351V (or RG353V), and RG353P are the best options.

Retroid Pocket 3+ fucked up with the select and start buttons but they already leaked that they'll just make the 4 with a better version already slated next year so its not worth it until you hold out on the supreme version.

If you're looking at majority of 6th generation consoles games that doesn't include Xbox, that may be true. But perfectly? You're too optimistic about that. We're just now getting chips with 2017 flagship mobile phone architectures. No android phone so far can run Rogue Squadron 2 on Dolphin at full speed on mobile outside of hacked iPhone 12s mostly due to CPU brute forcing. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can probably do it but it is unreleased until 2023. You're looking until 2028 if the time lag is the same to get this power in a $150 device. For most of 6th generation, you're already pretty much there with the T618 and this is a chip that was already released in 2019 by Unisoc which is now just trickling down to this pricepoint. 6th generation is where mobile chips are going to feel like time stopped until someone is willing to eat a loss with a flagship mobile SOC on a device selling cheaply before the 2028 timeline when the chips become cheap enough.

Anyway to each their own. If you can find a 3DS cheap locally, fuck yeah go for it. Even if it's the 'New' 3DS, it would be a win.

The screen on the Deck blows. Even so you can just get a phone with a controller if you're that much of an idiot that wants to max out 3D games.

That hunk of shit will be worthless in 2 years. I only like the Deck so that more fags beta test SteamOS so I can boot into it later on an actual desktop PC and reap the benefits for free.

You're still not going to be able to use the handy dedicated wattage and clockspeed toggles on your desktop as they are far from that. And making any sort of Steam Machines 2.0 given the flop they had with the original was going to be impossible so the only way to win back confidence was to fill the niche of a powerful handheld. They will scale down the power aspect in the next handheld, probably not go semicustom and use a laptop chip and just make the other aspects like the screen OLED and etc. It's also not like at some point, mods will appear for it by reusing some sort of smartphone OLED screen and etc.

It already is a dock device. If you mean they should turn it into a cheaper micro desktop by stripping the screen and battery to save $50, then maybe some people would like that. Yeah to be fair it actually is almost impossible to resell them on eBay. For whatever reason since they think you're adding an SD card filled with a ton of ROMs ( which let's admit most of us do anyway) they will take your fucking eBay post down because of copyright strikes.

No joke I had to repost a fucking Anbernic RG351MP probably because of some Chang main lander getting pissed that I was reselling his stupid fucking product from AliExpress on eBay instead.

The only goal for this type of collecting is to "find the one that fits you". Honestly I think the whole niche is okay UP to the PS1. Past that, just use a phone + controller.

Also you're spending like around $150 each time if you get a small SD card and a maxed out SD card for all your ROMs for each device so there's an extra $20 to $40 right there on top of probably the near $100 with shipping.

Not to downplay this thread but I think it's just better to lurk and not consume as much as these Changs want you too.

Even for the Retroid Pocket, I guarantee you that the "max" edition coming out in a year from now will be probably their best one so hold yourself over with some stupid Miyoo Mini or a lower tier Anbernic device until then.

Those are all minor though but I like it. They usually have bad shoulder button placement but that is due to the chinese hating stacked shoulder buttons. Real patrician is a flip design a la gba sp

I'm honestly not sure what stating the price of things is doing exactly. What argument are you trying to make here?

Anyone who buys these kinds of handhelds are aware of the gimmick and are aware that they probably have a smartphone that can do just as well or better than the chinkboys.

>upfront cost plus shipping plus SD card cost

Yup. Yup. Majority of people are aware of this. Not sure what your point is. The RP3+, for instance, comes with 128 of storage by default so most people aren't going to bother with extra storage. At least I'm not. Matter of fact, I'm bought a mini-HDMI cord so I can play it on my TV which cost me $16 AND I plan to replace the membranes and buttons at some point. Again, added cost I'm prepared for.

I can't imagine many people just buying these handhelds willy-nilly for the fuck of it. They're very niche and appear to a very specific kind of person.

Depends on what filters. It seems like the same screen. If the sprites/pixel are uneven trying messing with the bi-linear filtering settings in retroarch.

Rule of thumb is that you upgrade your handheld if 1. it breaks 2. you want a bigger screen. 3. you want to emulate more powerful consoles.

Make sure you check the 'Sold' amount next to the listing. A reputable seller will typically have 50+ items sold for a decent one.

Also check and gauge the price range of typical items being sold do you make sure you're not getting ripped off. Aka for ex: do not pay $90 for a Miyoo Mini when it's supposed to be $40 to $60 etc on AliExpress if you track the item each week throughout the week.

I mention the whole price range thing because they can either overcharge you or have "a really good deal" which equivalates to a scam since the item will never ship or you'll get a PM stating "Dear friend (we don't have that item) etc"

I haven't had that happen to me yet but I've read some have had it happen here.

Dude is talking about Miyoo Mini which you can't put AmberElec on because Anbernic =/ Miyoo Mini's creators. He only has the option between stock firmware and OnionOS.

I don't have a Miyoo Mini but if you already flashed it once, maybe there's some way you can flash it back to the stock firmware.

That or maybe there's a better nightly build of OnionOS.

I too am being slightly oblivious here but am trying to think of ideas on how you can fix this so bear with me.

Only thing I can think of is have you tried a different SD card? Did you make sure to get a SanDisk SD card and not get a shitty off brand SD card or also make sure if it was a LEGIT SanDisk SD card?

I mention this because I ALMOST got scammed for a fake SanDisk SD card on Amazon but noticed from the reviews that there's some shitty resellers that are slapping SanDisk logos onto knockoff SD cards, so make sure to watch out for that bullshit.

They didn't do this in the past since they were on schedules to announce "+" versions of their handhelds in advance with related upgrade kits but now they're starting to do the Anbernic route and not giving a single fuck about the consumer.

Well to be fair, at least you tried. That's pretty damn admirable. I would akin this to a similar scenario like if you learned how to install Linux on a laptop and didn't like it but realized there might be a better distro for your use case.

In this case you liked the vanilla setup and that's fine and there's nothing wrong with that. Tinkering is one thing but to be fair, once I get a handheld the way I want it, I just resort to favorites, using a "random" button to pick a random game, or sticking with a single game from start to finish but mostly just for "having fun".

If you're not having fun then there's always something else to do.

You gotta be specific about your budget. If it's pocket sized for up to PS1, Miyoo Mini.

Budget friendly is not good for Dreamcast or Saturn imo. You'll probably have to shell out $200 for a device that could do this nicely (not recommending Retroid Pocket 3+ cause the start and select button positioning is gay imo).

For higher 3D stuff for what you want, I would honestly go the phone + Razer Kishi V2 controller route imo but thats just me.

Haven't considered the Aya ones or Odin ones but am pretty sure one of them is heavily dependent on gay crowdfunding to the point where if you didn't back them in some gay crowdfunding run, you'll get ripped off price wise.

Personally, just watch "Retrogamecorps" or "Taki Udon" on YouTube as they usually have the better performance per cost ratio type review videos on what you can get out of a handheld vs what you paid etc.

Also imo, if you could wait, I would either hold out until the next major Steam Deck release as I think that would be a better win if you got the money for it.

If not, then just go the phone plus controller route.

Put JELOS onto the first SD card. Then when you feel like playing N64, take out the first SD card so it boots into Android and learn how to tweak MupenFZPro to run N64 games decently.

Make sure that when you're in Android mode to use the touch screen, swipe down, and apply the "CPU Boost" icon that's shaped like a processor since you're going to need the boost for emulation and it's not enabled by default so without it, it makes N64 appear sluggish.

Put some PC ports on it via Port Master. Compile Super Mario 64 PC port for the RG353V. Idk get creative, squeeze that machine to do everything and hoard ROM sets.

That all depends however if you got the Android capable one. If not, the Linux only one is gimped in comparison. And make sure you get a big SD card from a good brand like SanDisk or Samsung cause the default Chinese SD cards they give you are shit tier in the long run for reliability.

Almost got it working once on an iPad but if retro emulation is your thing, stick to Android phones if you're going the phone route.

A lot of dudes say the Xiaomi chink android smartphones are good if you can get them used around $100 to $200. However a good Razer Kishi V2 controller is like $50 to $80, but it's USB C so there's no input lag etc and it looks pretty fucking solid.

You can also check out the Odin handhelds or the Aya Neo devices. They might have the performance you're looking for regarding Sega Saturn and Dreamcast but honestly I don't know since I haven't looked into it personally.

Random idea but do you have a Nintendo Switch from the original 2 years of launch? An idea I thought of is to just mod one via the softmod hack and just put Android on it with emulators frontends.

Not sure how to handle the OLED request cause I don't give that much of a shit about the panels. Even on the same idea, you can probably hack a Nintendo Switch OLED edition but I think those require hardware mod chips.

For your use case despite the gay screen requirement thing, I'd say look into the Anbernic RG353P.

It's a comfy device and fucking awesome for SNES and GBA which is what I personally use it for. Imagine a very modern take on a Super Nintendo controller with stacked shoulder buttons and very good dpad and buttons.

If you're going the Anbernic route for any of their devices, always get the one thats Android AND Linux compatible, not just Linux compatible.

I've been in more of a Genesis / SNES vibe these days with that machine but sometimes I'll take out the first SD card, boot into Android and run some light N64 games like Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 on it and chill out.

Cannot recommend that RG353P enough since I got so burned from the RG351MP in terms of how shit it actually was vs how "premium" it was supposed to be from all the shill marketing.

Going forward you can just use "Unofficial OS" to get the same JELOS updates in an easier fashion.

I do wonder why they're trying to filter the average person from being able to use JELOS. Probably he doesn't want to support it anymore is my guess. It's a lot to have to support like fucking 5+ devices to be honest.

Speaking from experience, copying save data from older consoles like SNES etc is easy since you just have to find the corresponding .srm files and sync them over from a PC running an emulator to a handheld or phone's directory where saves are located

I've done this in RetroArch by forcing it to dump saves in a specific directory.

Your problem consists of a few workflow issues:
1. You need to find out if you can find a utility for a software modded PS3 to rip the save from an original PSP game. Pretty sure the saves are located on the device itself somewhere. You might even be able to use FTP between your Windows or Linux PC and the PS3 on your local LAN.

However I don't know if the save files are encrypted by default.

You might want to ask on the Batocera Linux Plebbit about this since I know it doesn't even involve Batocera but a lot of people who use that retro gaming Linux distro are into weird workflows like this

2. If you haven't hacked your PS3, you should. It's fairly easy, just find out what model it is and look on YouTube for guides on how to do it. I mention this because I hacked a PS3 last year and it is the easiest browser software hack on earth with no mod chip or soldering needed.

3. Find out whatever PSP emulator that's available on that handheld device and figure out how the saves work on it so you can plan your attack a bit easier.

I mention this because I had to transfer saves from a fucking actual Nintendo 3DS aka Pokemon saves by ripping it via a community tool, and then figuring out where RetroArch places the saves by default on Batocera Linux and also how Anbernic devices utilize saves.

It wasn't easy but I found out that you can basically ssh into these Anbernic handhelds so if you can ssh, you can also use 'sshfs' from your desktop computer to mount the Anbernic handhelds as file directories so you can dump ROMs or saves onto it. Along with using 'rsync -a' you can remotely manage these devices and sync saves across them.

I can't answer for ArkOS. But for JELOS, it looks like you will need to provide auto frame skip of 1 and use 1x resolution sometimes.

I think it was the last build before the final official build, but it might also be that latest build.

I've tried installing it fresh by re-writing the 32gb SanDisk endurance microSD I'm using for firmware, but would still encounter the issue even when using the stock firmware SD that shipped with the system.

I will try flashing a new firmware at some point but right now it does strike me as an issue possibly with my unit, the chipset being used, or maybe to do with the 256gb data SD in slot 2. It's not a slow microSD card, it's a SanDisk Ultra, A1 class.

Buttons and ergonomics feel good, size is about where you'd want it to be for a device like this (I do prefer smaller handhelds like the Miyoo Mini and RG353M though). Feels light, which gives it a slightly cheap feeling. Their front end is trash, and a number of other things feel janky. I installed Daijishou, but it's not auto-launching as home app as it should on start-up, and the stupid home button still takes me to Anbernic's launcher.

Are you trying to tell me that Risk of Rain is not SOVL? If so, I do pity you.

That said, I own(ed) more (Chink) handhelds than any of you faggots in this thread and I think a high end phone running Retroarch is simply the most enjoyable way to play these games.

I even owned the fucking GP2X when it came out and I can still tell you that none of these devices even come close to the raw power, efficiency and convenience a phone gives you. Yes, the early PSP homebrew scene, the early days of the Dingoo and the prime of the Pandora were comfy times but it's fucking 2022, get with the time zoomie.

Oh yeah I even used this thing for a while but when Android 10 came out, it got too inconvenient to use as a phone. Also it struggled with anything past N64, while even sub-100€ phones can easily emulate Gamecube and Dreamcast now.

Good for you to BTFO the soul zoomer.

It's one thing to own these which are fine. But the minute you start emulating PS2 and Gamecube onwards on these handhelds, you realize they were scrapped phones that were reshelled.

I firmly think that its either go low tier, or get the Steam Deck or phone + Razer Kishi V2.

Otherwise, face it. You're probably playing them at home so just emulate the bs on a PC.

I agree, it's a cool novelty and also the reason why I still own most of the self-built Raspberry Pi Zero based devices and the Miyoo Mini. It's a neat form factor, especially for GBA and below. Also, here's the Dingoo next to a PSP Go. Comfy times.

>>9493656
>What is the hardest game or software you tried to push on any of your devices?
On the Xperia Play? Probably the more demanding N64 titles like Rogue Squadron or easier Dreamcast titles.
On a modern Android phone like the OnePlus 8T can play Mech Warrior 3 in Windows 98 via DosBox Pure (Retroarch). I also played through about half of Oni on PS2. Many Switch games also work, like Risk of Rain, Nuclear Throne etc. If you want power in a small form factor, the GPD Win 3 is smaller than some phones and can play AAA games at roughly the same performance of the Steam Deck.

I will admit, I watch Retrogamecorps a bit too much. I should really get into something else for a while.

Its been more of a "Lemme watch this video while I eat lunch at home etc". I mostly do it to find out what's current but laugh at the comments since its the same Zoomers giving chang money each time and expecting anything different.

I am convinced it has peaked with the RG353P.

The only novel thing they can probably do at this point is try to copy the GBA, GBA SP, or the Gamegear. (Yes, I have seen the GBA clones but I am talking about Anbernic etc doing it).

I wanna check out running an Amiga based OS on it though. I recently got an aftermarket SD card adapter that allows you to easily change between 2 SD cards so I might opt for that when I wanna check out some Amiga games or cool old software.

That's why I said in the last thread the RG353P was a fluke. Anbernic just happened to copy a decent design this time that's ergonomic and has stacked shoulders. Chinks will never actively improve on things, they don't care, they will just keep copying and you have to pray they happen to get most of the things right on a certain attempt.

If they can re-use the shell for the RG351M to make an upgrade like the RG353M, I think there's a chance they'll learn which models are popular and which aren't.

So, I'm hoping that there'll be refined versions of the RG353P in the future with better chipset, but I'm also not holding my breath.

I still get the "fails to wake from sleep" bug I mentioned and that's a small thing that does hamper my enjoyment, it impedes the pick up and play aspect if I want a small break, but it kills the session.
