This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the Metal Slug Anthology collection for the PS2 is a great (and affordable) way to play the series

Ignore the above retards. Emulate in FB Neo or MAME with autofire and with emulated CPU overclock to remove slowdown (FB Neo is best for this since it actually saves the settings, you need at least 300% to remove all slowdown). Remember to use the right BIOS to enable blood (or just use UNIBIOS).

AES has some additional control advantages over MVS such as being able to rebind Slug attack to a button so you can actually jump and shoot, or Vulcan fix (I don't believe 1 or 2 have these regardless though)

Also adding onto this: playing a port of Metal Slug is usually a terrible idea as they add a shit ton of input lag and usually don't have any option to remove slowdown, which massively improves the games; the slowdown literally causes the game to drop inputs and feels awful.

It's not like some shmups which are ""balanced"" around slowdown, which is a pretty obnoxious mechanic in general as slowdown is literally the framerate tanking, input lag increasing, and the actual game speed slowing down. And it also makes accurate emulation of this slowdown more difficult as it is hardware based.

The PS2 anthology collection plays fine. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself. you might be pleasantly surprised. I played the original games in arcades back in the day, so I am not grandstanding. They even emulated the slowdown of Metal Slug 2 in the anthologies

There's three different variants on the PS4/PS5. Emulated PS2 Metal Slug Anthology, Arcade Archives and a native port.

Get in a time machine, go back to late 90s early 2000s California. Play some joust at Northstar at Tahoe, or centipede at Boreal while drying out your snowboard boots. After go to Round Table pizza order pepperoni mushroom olive and that ranch sauce vegetarian pizza they sell then fuck up some metal slug ghosts and goblins pac man Sengoku MvC

Factually correct. Getting blood to work was my biggest problem. I don't know if this is a common issue but I personally had trouble getting my bios settings to save within the GUI and I had to hold start to open up the bios within the game itself and save the blood settings per game.

Overclocking FB neo works so well with these games it feels like black magic.

If you don't want to go the emulation route, I think the current ACA console releases are considered fine. I have Metal Slug 1 on Switch, and it works.
The drawback is you will have to buy all of them separately.
The DotEmu PC releases are considered not amazingly good.

>> No.9483806

>>9483340
There's still some reason to buy the PC versions. You can extract the ROMs for use with emulators from the Linux installers included as goodies with the GOG versions of Metal Slug 1, 2, X and 3
It's just a matter of copy pasting a zip file after installing. You can even do it with WSL in Windows 10 or 11

Do you own it? For some reason I feel like you have never played it for yourself and are just parroting something you heard. I actually own it. The only slowdown I ever experienced was in Metal Slug 2. I can't 100% same if it's the same as in the original, but it sure as hell felt like it. Before you ask, yes I really have played the games on an arcade unit. It was years ago in the 90s (and after) but I did.
