There was many. It wasn't rare that the western version was an up to date version of the original.

Dragon Quest VIII is another example. The version for the western markets added the magnificent synphonic version of the soundtrack, for another DQ example

Any licensed game that becomes an original ip. So stuff like Shatterhand and DeCap Attack, Blazing Lazers and Mario USA. It lets the gameplay be the main focus rather then the ip attached to it and gives the developer free reign to rerelease it or expand on it with a sequel without dealing with the copyright it had slapped on it. Its the one case of localization i wish had happened more.

Power Blade is a rare localization W
Tho I'm not sure if it really counts as a localization in a traditional sense so much as "complete fucking overhaul/remake"
It's so much better than the Japanese game, which feels like a semi-polished beta in comparison.

In terms of actual localization and related changes, I can't really think of any. I feel like those kind of changes usually make the experience worse, then again, I'm a biased weeb who prefers accuracy. The WD approach never appealed to me but I'm probably a minority with that opinion

Wario Blast. In Japan, it was just a regular Bomberman Game Boy game. But the localized version added Wario as a playable character.
Also thought the plot, even if there was barely one, was a bit more interesting. In the original Bomberman GB, Bomberman simply gets his things stolen by the Madbombers. In the Wario Blast story line, Wario somehow finds a portal that links his world to Bomberman's world. Wario goes there to gather resources and minions and Bomberman must stop him, giving you the hero route or villain route depending on who you choose.

the funny thing about this is that Working Designs use to be praised for their localisations, and using original art on the packaging and not hiring an American artist to redraw the box art, etc. Yeah, they definitely made the games harder for the west. Which had more to do with the rental market. I guess their localization would be considered the 'anime club' variety. They do take liberties with the dialogue.

Not always. They ruined the balance of Silhouette Mirage partially tarnishing its legacy, and made Exile 2 for the PC Engine borderline unplayable. >> No.9475230

Disagree.
I actually quite enjoy the way they handled SM.
>made Exile 2 for the PC Engine borderline unplayable
No. They made it completely unplayable. Unwinnable, even, with the ridiculous stat changes. I gave up when my level was capped and I could barely attack anything new coming my way and idk anyone else who beat it, either. We tried, but we all failed.
They're far from saintly, but SM was a poor ezample of their fuck ups and if you mention Exile 2, you need to be honest about it being completely unplayable not "borderline unplayable." Since you didn't know that the way they fucked with Exile 2 makes it unwinnable, I'm going to guess that you've never actually played their localisations and are simply parrotting some shit you've heard others say.

Fuck you I did, and I dropped it until the Un-Worked Designs hacks came. I've said "borderline", because no-one can be certain that there wasn't at least a single crazy fool who finished that exact version of the game.
I'd think that games such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are unfinishable, but the Internet proved me wrong. If the localized version of Exile 2 was highlighted by some e-celeb, then I am certain that at least someone would record themselves beating it on that unfair difficulty.
I've played the first PCE Exile on its localized difficulty, though.

Also, Kirby's Avalanche on the SNES is a western localization of Super Puyo Puyo:

It was done by a person named Greg Martin (RIP). Greg was an industrial artist who did a lot of cover art for various forms of home media. This guy did VHS covers, DVD covers, video game covers. You're seen this man's artwork in one form or another without knowing it.

Id say its similar appeal to seeing Mario is more varied and weird adventures like the RPGs or Sonic anime plot bs. I'm not going to speak like I have any authority on the subject. But that statement seems a little too broad. I am not trans of any kind, But I have known trans people via the web and forums and shit who would have anime or manga avatars. There's a lot of fringe and not so fringe manga/ anime that would features transgender types. I haven't played all the Working Designs games, the only one I own is Vay for the Sega CD and I had Popful Mail as well. Those games threw a lot of American pop culture references and jokes into them and would have the odd PC-ish jokes in them. But nothing that was too outlandish,

Back in the day, WD translations were generally acceptable. Though even magazines like Die Hard GameFan (who would hype all WD releases) would rail on them for going a bit overboard. But they would still praise WD overall for keeping it 'as close as possible' to the original source material. It was different times when something like Lunar would be considered a good localisation. Though I feel like the bar was kinda raised with Snatcher and Metal gear Solid on the PS1. But Hideo would disagree, since he fired Jeremy Blaustein from doing MGS2 and demanded a much more literal translation. The kind of stuff WD did was closer to some of the English OVA and anime dubs that were happening at the time.

The re-balancing to make the game harder. I don't really blame WD for doing it, as this was very common with localisations in general. Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis removing the life bar. Just one example. There really was a stigma around rentals and how it eats into sales profits. So devs would jack up the challenge to make the games harder on purpose. It was a real thing.

>> No.9483089

>>9483058
I think it's mostly the perception of what makes a "good" translation for many people. Phoenix Wright is loved and it practically was a Working Designs style when it started out because of its attempts to go "no this isn't Japan what are you talking about haha hey Maya sure loves to eat HAMBURGERS am I right". But overall anime and Japanese media has become big and ingrained enough that the Working Designs/4Kids/Saban levels of translating something is more met with derision than "oh boy anime". Even when Nintendo tossed memes into localized scripts of their games, people are more likely to groan and wish they weren't there now.

I think part of it too is that Working Designs translated Magic Knights Rayearth, which has the honor of being the last western Sega Saturn game. If it were anything else, sure, but Rayearth was an established franchise and WD putting on their trademark brand of humor soured a lot to them: even back when the game was new, people felt it was an awkward and out of place translation for the game because the anime was available and already had fans. So you have a game that hits a lot of "oh should I check this out" flags (last console release in the west, based on a beloved series, etc) and get hit with "eh, they made it worse" is sort of an "the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes" moment for them.

Also they put an ammo system into Silhouette Mirage and that personally rankled me because it meant you never wanted to experiment with different weapons due to the cost to use them, then they added grinding for money on top of it. They frequently mistook tedium for difficulty.

>play the game the way the devs intended
>devs intended for the character to have 1 dialog box instead of 3
Translations of anything tends to have to add more dialog boxes due to text space with Jap characters usually requiring less symbols to write the same English sentence that you have to smash buttons to get through every time. It's funny how anyone defends adding more than necessary text boxes to insert any amount of idiotic, "localization" text.

>I think it's mostly the perception of what makes a "good" translation for many people.

When Working Designs released some of their earliest Sega CD games, disc media for home consoles were still new, and Japanese to English localisations were generally not good overall. Working designs got a pass for their effort in the voice acting and overall localisation. This was a time when Japanese to English localisations were still being done by small groups, or were like Samurai Pizza Cats. But later releases, in the 32bit generation, there was more demand for straight forward localisations. Even back then, there were still a few criticisms over WD's taking the localisation too far. But that was easily dismissed.

>>9483089
>I think part of it too is that Working Designs translated Magic Knights Rayearth, which has the honor of being the last western Sega Saturn game.

Magic Knight Rayearth was released in 1995 in Japan, and a really early Saturn game. Working Designs originally announced that they started localisation in July 1996, along with the localisation of Dragon Force. Apparently they lost part of the game source code. Or Sega lost it from a HDD crash and they had to rebuild part of the game, which delayed it into 1998.

>> No.9483543 [DELETED]

>>9483216
Yeah they were given a lot of pass by people since they'd sometimes do such grandiose releases for games that any other company would fart out and not look back. Look at the way they handled the PSX releases for the Lunar games. All those extras at a time when games didn't do things like that.

Imo the Dragon Quest localizations since 8 are 100% an improvement over the original scripts. The monster name puns and the accents make the game a lot more funny and interesting compared to the original Japanese which is comparatively very bland. The older English translations might be more a bit faithful but the new ones are just an improvement in every way.

I gotta agree actually. I think that mix of light hearted fantasy, though treated like a serious world, mixed with Toriyama art, punny almost Mother-like monsters and even that super stereotypical Renaissance faire dialect all blend together into a nice mix and gives the ip a strong identity you couldn't mistake for something else. Like a bloke like Yangus just feels like the kinda low brow slob who would have the type of voice acting it has. DQ just feels like a Japanese take on the quintessential western knights tale adventure in the same way you could say Earthbound is a Japanese take on suburban America. Sega Saturn Magazine: Dynamite Deka is called Die Hard Arcade in the West. Is the content the same?
Makoto Uchida: The versions are almost identical. The difference is that in Die Hard Arcade, the building is called the Nakatomi building, and you can see the Nakatomi symbol here and there. That’s been cut out of the Japanese version.
Sega Saturn Magazine: Are there differences between the characters in both versions?
Makoto Uchida: Yes, quite a lot. For Die Hard Arcade, 20th Century Fox told us to not stray from the story of Die Hard too much. Since the movie didn’t revolve around the president [of the U.S.] , we were told to make the girl appearing in the game into the daughter of the head of Nakatomi. The overall story was to be about terrorists taking over the Nakatomi building. The name of the male character (player one) was accordingly changed to John McClane, and the female player character (player two) also got a name that was different from the Japanese version. Content-wise, the games are almost the same, and even the story isn’t that different on the whole.
