Did the PS2's first year (2000) live up to the hype?

>> No.9480184

Did the PS2 even have a first year? Weren't the first wave of consoles defective ans returned en masse?

yes indeed my s2 had Disk Read Error. Dark Cloud was my favorite ps2 game.

Obviously not but DVD players were expensive for 18 year olds

the only game from 2000 i have from ps2 is tekken tag tournament. that game is fun enough.

Weird how the cover looks like n64 quality render but the game itself looks pretty good

no, magazines between 2000 and early 2002 told us that ps2 games and ps2 lineup was weak and ps2 was too hard to program for it. It wasn't until late 2002 and early 2003 that PS2 take over his crown.

>> No.9480517

>>9480459
Must've been retarded magazines.
By the end of 2001 there was Tekken Tag, GT3, GTA3, MGS2, DMC, FFX, PES1, Ico, and dozens of other strong titles.
PS1 had a decent year 2000, but everyone switched 2001

>>9480517
maybe in USA. In Europe almost everybody switched on 2002/2003

>PS2's first year (2000)
So basically just the US launch titles? They were pretty good, I suppose. AC2, Midnight Club, RRV and Timesplittered justified owning one. The real heavy hitters came in 2001 though.

How do the Armored Core games on PS2 compare to the ones on PS1? I've only played the ones on the Playstation.

>> No.9481093

I honestly don’t get the bitching about this lineup. I don’t know if I can speak for myself at the time, but now, I’d be pretty happy with just having Armored Core, Dynasty Warriors, TimeSplitters, and Tekken Tag. And I did have Unreal Tournament in the early 2000s, so I guess add that too even though I’m not terribly interested now.
And those are just the ones I’ve played that I know for sure I like. I’ve still never tried the two From ARPGs, Summoner, or Smugglers Run which I’ve seen praised.

Meanwhile, the PS5 STILL doesn’t have much to play, and what it does have is available elsewhere.

The Dreamcast existed at that time. That's literally it.
PS2's launch library was much better than any other Playstation and most other consoles too, but the existence of the Dreamcast and its year of extra releases made it look bad by comparison.

>> No.9481156

>>9481107
That's probably a good point. I never had a Dreamcast, but my friend did, and even though he didn't have a lot of games for it Sonic Adventure and the Sega fishing game with the reel controller left a big impact on me. Not to mention the internet stuff, which was mysterious to my poor ass.
I think it's nuts how different perspectives are on console lifespans and timeframes. It took maybe a year for the PS2 to get some of its biggest hits, but that's a relatively long time when it was only about five years before the successor was announced. Now the PS5 is fucking two years old and has so little to play, and pretty much nothing that can't be played elsewhere.

I remember seeing this game on a Target store shelf when I was a kid, and assuming it was an Ocarina of Time knockoff.

Only one of those games I had was Orphen

>> No.9481309

>>9481306
I remember going to Gamestop with my friend once, and he tried to buy Orphen. The guy at the counter wouldn't let him. He was adamant that it was just terrible, to the point where he wouldn't allow him to waste the money on it.
Looking back, that's pretty inappropriate, but I gotta give props to a guy being that honest. It's almost impossible to imagine a Gamestop employee actively trying to stop someone from wasting money. But I guess it's also hard to imagine a Gamestop employee at all these days.

nah. it's only when gta 3 came out that people started being blown away

no

2000 was considered a dud for the ps2, it was a really common thread on the magic box forums that japan was disappointed in the lack of compelling software. remember they got it in march 2000. games like dragon quest 7 and vagrant story were what they played on their new ps2s, it was mostly a ps1 + dvd machine

the big namco games didnt shift units like the ps1 entries did (someone is going to tell my TTT was as big as tekken 2/3 or ridge racer, cmon)

the first big titles came out around the middle of 2001, mass uptake of software began later around gta3/mgs2/gt3/ff10

i believe the reason they launched so early was DVD support + the killing blow to sega who had the tiniest bits of momentum + getting ahead of microsofts xbox. it was clever in retrospect, most ppl dont really care about first year. if xbox had gotten out early with guaranteed dvd support it may have looked different, even for japan

the ps2 didnt arrive until mgs2

looking at ps2 games by year, it took a couple of months to get the ball roiling, but things started picking up after the first half of the year.

Not at all. The character doesn’t really look like Link in the game, but the way he’s cropped on the cover certainly does. It’s actually a semi-randomly generated action-RPG dungeon crawler where your weapons level is instead of you, and it has town building mechanics.
