What are the best SMW romhacks I can play that won't completely bore me or kick my ass?

>> No.9479887

Plumber for All Seasons. You're probably tired of seeing people dickride that hack, but it's very well made and a safe recommendation.

Check out the Self-Made Island youtube channel. It's a video catalog of mario hacks, usually good ones.

12 Magic Orbs is pretty good, aside from a few awful levels that ruin the hack.
Super Mario Bros: Peach's Adventure.
Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Adventure in the Gemstone Island.
New Super Mario World 2: Around the World (same dev as Orbs).
Also, there is this pic, but so far I only like Luigi and the Island of Mystery.

Mushroom Kingdom over crimson skies, JUMP games, /ourhack/, Brutal Mario and some Korean hacks like Piranha Island are pretty well made

Super Peach World. It's not too hard (for me personally, it's hard at all), levels are clever and not too long, has an amazing original soundtrack. It's almost a hidden gem, I'm surprised that it never gets brought up.

why not try out my romhack? it's the first I ever made but it's pretty cool. I would say it's worth trying just for the cool overworld I created and the music. It's fairly vanilla but I like it that way, no weird puzzles or kaizo shit, while still being fairly difficult.

This. There's a lot of good SMW hacks out there but to be completely honest, most of them are going to kick your ass if you aren't pretty well acquainted with the game.

How would you guys go about shilling your romhack release if you had to? I'm planning on releasing a demo for my hack on SMWC during C3 in a month. I'd like to bring attention to it without just spamming it all over the place.

Side question, what are some things you guys want to see done/attempted in more hacks? I feel like many traditional hacks have felt pretty generic recently.

As the other Anon said, most streamers only play Kaizo and only play normal hacks when it's a "major" release, such as Jump 1/2 or A Plumber For All Seasons. Do people really just ask streamers to play their stuff? I figured that would be annoying. I do know one guy I could ask to play my hack, but at the same time I don't want to be that annoying guy in twitch chat spamming "play my level!!!" That mario maker streamers always complain about.

god, kaizo is such a fucking stain on smw nowadays. nobody gives a fuck about "regular" hacks unless they're insanely intricate projects that someone has been slowly working on for years. meanwhile kaizo hacks are all OVERdesigned and clogging up the smwc hacks section beyond belief

imagine being a newcomer to the scene and you want to make a simple, fun hack, maybe something with a story or a short one-world game. then you try to show it off and guess what. barely anyone will give a fuck because its not kaizo. fucking clown world

>meanwhile kaizo hacks are all OVERdesigned
unless im misunderstanding what you mean, but a lot of kaizo gets shit on for being unoriginal and uncreative. it's rare for kaizo to be overdesigned.
also, a lot of kaizo is easier than a lot of Standard, the bar for kaizo has gone down a lot and is more accessible than ever
but yes it is a clog, good thing for filters. but even if kaizo was gone, a 1-world hack would be treated as fodder. there's multiple streamers who's played all the world 1 hacks cause they take less than 10 minutes

>> No.9488410

>>9488364
Well that's where the demand is apparently. The only way to counter it is to keep playing and promoting the non-kaizo hacks. Have any good vanilla or normal difficulty hacks come out in the last few years?

i was referring more to the aesthetics design. so many kaizos have pretty visuals and the fanciest asm effects you'll ever see, all to disguise the hollow shell of a game they really are. sorta reminds me of the vldc7 gambly night drama, except i dont see anyone complaining about it in kaizo. people eat it the fuck up though.

idk maybe im just a washed up smw grandma. it's just disappointing to see kaizo overtake everything else in prevalence so much. go to most online communities, or any inperson events that they happen to go to, and they're probably playing or talking about kaizo. i still remember going to agdq 2020 and there was a dude playing touhou mario on one end of the practice room, and there were two people watching him. and on the other end someone was playing some kaizo game and there was a bigass crowd. amazing

Definitely happens in SMW kaizo. Now glitches are becoming popular in kaizo, but they're always "oh ok that's neat" and then boring.
As for it's popularity, i think it's 50% of the romhacks on SMWC? There's almost a new kaizo hack everyday

I agree. I dislike how the modern hack venn diagram of
>High production value, high quality level design, new .asm and level gimmicks while remaining pretty faithful to the core Mario playstyle
>Not Kaizo
is practically two completely separate circles these days. The only really great stuff that fall under both feels pretty limited and I've only seen:
>JUMP and JUMP1/2
>YUMP 2
>TSRPR
>Plumber for All Seasons
>Mice series
>Nachos and Fried Oreos
A lot of other stuff just feels either dated or too different from traditional Mario. Maybe I'm just not seeing enough of the good stuff but it feels like every hack worth a damn these days is a Kaizo. I don't even really mind Kaizo either because I like a good few (Luminescent for instance is great) but it feels so overbearing now.

honestly, i feel like a lot of Jump is kaizo too. "Kaizo with powerups". I dont like the idea of standard levels being as strict as kaizo levels with damage forgiveness.
But this is exactly why i said earlier i think kaizo level design is easier to make. kaizo levels you just force the player to do what you want, so you know exactly what the player is going to get. in a true standard level, they're a bit more open and have multiple ways to get around an obstacle, but how do you make that good and consistent? I do wish more people tried making Standard, but it's not easy
