was this really necessary? or did they needlessly ruin the look of 3/4ths of a game library

>> No.9477049

It was. Have you seen games on the original GBA or frontlit SP screen? They were super dark and needed blownout just to look somewhat normal.

>> No.9477050

The original GBA had no backlit screen, the game did not look like that on an actual system.

>> No.9477064

>>9477028
Its why I stopped using my gameboy player

>> No.9477070

All GBA games look like they have too much saturation on colors to compensate for the GBA screen reducing the colors. Apply a true GBA screen color filter on it and it'll look the way the devs wanted it to look.

>> No.9477089

>>9477070
In addition to this, these days you can usually find ROM hacks with alternative, desaturated colors, or, in the case of SNES ports, hacks that revert the colors to match the original version. Frankly, I'm more annoyed by the shitty sound quality.

I always found baffling Nintendo couldn't simply rig some basic hardware flags in the newer versions of the system so devs could simply implement gamma correction in their games for non-backlit versions of the hardware.

>in the case of SNES ports, hacks that revert the colors to match the original version.
At that point, just play the SNES version.

>> No.9477217

If you're playing the game on a downgraded handheld port, you will never in a trillion years experience the game. It's such a sadness that you think you've played Donkey Kong Country on your fucking Game Boy. Get real.

calm down autist, I was just using dkc as an example because it has a snes comparison to drive the point.

seems by dkc3 they had course corrected a bit, probably one of the last non shovelware gba games being released in 05.

It's almost like backlit GBAs existed at the time and were actually taken into account or something.

>> No.9477339

What the original GBA's screen darker than the GBC's? I don't recall GBC games very much looking like they were compensating for a dark screen.

I almost prefer the gba version to the snes version

Yes, zoomy zoomzoom-kun.

WHY DID NINTENDO DESIGN GAMES BASED AROUND THE HARDWARE AT THE TIME WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ME PLAYING THIS THIS ON AN EMULATOR 20 YEARS LATER

>> No.9477427

>>9477356
I've only played the SNES version, what does the GBA version have? I've heard there's a new soundtrack (Which I've listened to, I liked it), smaller sprites meaning less screen crunch in some areas and an entirely new world.

>> No.9477438

>>9477165
They did, just not until so late in the game that only a handful of games can detect that they are being played on a game boy player and automatically darken the colors.

>> No.9477439

>>9477190
I say the same people to the autists who painstakingly modded Sonic Adventure PC to look like the Dreamcast version - just play the Dreamcast version.

When you're dealing with a handful of colors on screen at once, it's okay for the screen to be dim. It's not okay when you have hundreds of colors on screen. Trying to figure out what Tony Hawk is doing in THPS2 is hard, okay?

>> No.9477456

>>9477439
I've tried playing the Dreamcast version and it had a ton of glitches I didn't experience when I just installed a modpack on my PC version, plus it was way more fun to play around with stuff like Super Sonic in normal stages and other things you can't get on the Dreamcast.

Why would the game need to detect that? Couldn't the Game Boy Player just detect it? It could just have hardcoded settings for each game right?

The GBA actually has a hardware bug where it interprets GBC palettes incorrectly and displays them much more darkly than a GBC does.

>> No.9478191

>>9477165
Sorry but other than some depth in the backgrounds the GBA looks hands down better. Original has way to much black, literally can't make half that shit out. GBA is crystal clear and can see every detail the developers intend to be there.

I would love to figure out how to apply the gamma correction via hardware with those funnyplaying ita screens

>> No.9478843

Because then you'd have games releasing after Game Boy Player that wouldn't be in the Game Boy Player database and wouldn't get any sort of correcting. It's better to put that in the game software.

I loved this version of the game as a kid since I didn't have a SNES at home. Ironically, I got it right around the time the GBA port came out so the TV ads running at the time would make me a little jealous.
