Genesis and it isn't close.
On a general note, why did so many console manufacturers have such a hard time making a dpad that didnt suck shit?

Why is the genesis one anon?

Genesis will always be better for pressing two directions at the same time, but I never had to do that do comfy snes wins.

Better diagonals, better overall mobility/feel. Sega had dpads figured out for a while there, Saturn dpads were godlike. Shame they forgot all that when it came time to make the Dreamcast pad

Because Nintendo patented it. If other companies copied it directly they'd get ass raped by Nintendo's lawyers. They found ways around it, usually by making the mechanism a disk and sticking arrows on top of it. In most cases the end result sucked shit but it was the best they could do without committing patent infringement.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo's patent has expired now. That's why one of the recent Xbox controllers finally copied Nintendo's original design.

That one doesn't infringe on the patent because it has a bunch of differences. The one on the xbox directly presses the PCB instead of rubber membranes, has no arrows on it, and internally it is a cross while the nintendo one is a disc with a cross on it.

lots of stupid small details but that's how you get around patents.

>Saturn dpads were godlike
This is true. I’ve tried my Genesis controller for Genesis emulation but my ufo Saturn game pad for Sega Genesis & Saturn emulation is far better. Still works after 25+ years too.
Nes/Snes get the snes controller though but it doesn’t feel as good in terms of how it fits in your hands and the tactile feedback for your thumbs.

>> No.9472905

The mega drive controller has the best d-pad, it's really comfortable. I like the PlayStation d-pad too. The Nintendo one feels too stiff, it makes my thumb hurt after a while.

>> No.9473000

they both kind of blow honestly, but that might be mostly due to being in the year of our lord current year. I didn't have either at their time due to poorfag, and getting my first SNES in 2009 and first Genesis in 2011, those dpads are quite smushy. the dualshock dpads hold up darn well, save for some mixed results over time from ds2 in my experience.

>> No.9473025

>>9472238
Xbox360 controller for some reason didn't even have 4 pads on its inner d-pad, only 3 and some cut-off joke for the right direction.

>> No.9473474

Sega had a lot better controllers since they were an arcade company, they knew how to build them.

>> No.9473565

>>9473474
This. Segas vast experience in building arcade dpad controllers meant they had t had a lot better controllers. Many Sega controllers for home consoles actually use authentic arcade dpads and authentic arcade silicone rubber buttons.

>> No.9473579

I was never a fan of the Nintendo dpad because I couldn't input Sabin's inputs on it reliably in FF3 US, and I would end up using that official snes fight stick instead for doing input. I don't know if the Genesis one is better, but the snes dpad isn't something I remember fondly .

a thrashed out genesis pad will still feel better to use than any nintendo pad in same condition. nintendo went as cheap as possible on their controllers, and it remained this way well into the wii era.

I'll support my endorsement of SNES d-pad: it is the most accurate d-pad of all time, there's no chance of accidentally pressing a diagonal like with Genesis

My NES pads both work despite some serious mileage and they were already used when I got them. I've used my SNES pads like 1/5th as much and one of them has non-functioning Y, A, and Select buttons.

>> No.9473940

>>9473790
IDK but I guess the SNES was a little better at cute cartoony graphics rather than gritty realism and the latter is preferable for fighting games.

>> No.9474519

snes to me just feels better for rocking back and forth between left and right, genesis feels better for needing to seamlessly use all 8 directions. It's a minor difference, both dpads are fantastic - it comes down to personal preference

Unless you bought chink rubber replacements.

>> No.9474642

>>9474602
I believe those chink pads are too thick compared to the original and makes it harder to press down on the buttons properly. You could make silicone rubber molds and make your own pads, there's instructions online for that.

I had a Genesis as a kid so that's what my hands are most used to, but I have to admit I kinda like the button layout on the SNES more, now that I've got both.
I wish it was a little bigger, though, the damn thing is tiny. I always feel like I'm gonna break it.

platformers require a lot more left-right adjustment, like when you're making a jump and have to change your trajectory ever so slightly.
