What about some love for my man Stanley?

>> No.9475316

Used to love DK3. Definitely a pleb filter just because it's not a cinematic platformer like the other two.

I really liked that early Famicom Nintendo titles cover art style with thick black outlines. Was even better that every game had it, so they felt like a part of a whole collection.
as for the game, it's funny how with all the Nintendo jerking over past 2 decades, neither DK Jr. or DK3 get much to any recognition. even from Nintendo, because you will only find those games remembered in titles like WarioWare (maybe Smash too, but I don't play smash).

Did Miyamoto really design this game? It feels very different.

That lineart style was probably more of general trend than a conscious branding choice on behalf of Nintendo, but yeah it's pretty cute and more timeless than parallel trends from that era

see, that's what I meant in >>9475332 . it's pretty weird how Nintendo keeps inserting Ice Climber and Game & Watch in many places, but DK3 is virtually never referenced much. maybe it didn't do well in sales?…

Not that anon but to my knowledge, outside of ports/re-releases and Smash (which references everything anyway)the only DK3 reference made in later games was the first level appearing in the background in Tropical Freeze

Sadly, he probably never will, if only because Mr. G&W stole his main move. Infact i think he even turns into the Greenhouse version of Stanley in the newest game when using it, but at the same time atleast that means he gets some kind of nod.

Seriously though, what was up with this? Was the dev just sticking his weird alien interest into this?

Stanley got a 3D model in Melee

>> No.9476460

>>9476139
Yeah, before Melee was released, I was sure SURE that Stanley (and Pit, but at least he came in later) would be in it but no. We get a fucking Rorschach inkblot with a hat and a couple of literal whos. They even lack their own individual names in game. Yes, I know they're Nana and Popo, but the announcer just says "ice climbers."
Now, I'm not even gonna front; they be bussin' frfr no cap but FUCK the fucking ice climbers.

I'm aware and it pissed me off.

Nobody wanted him, simple as.
Opposed to Wario where they were heavily requested him to be in a d stoll made it eventually despite development pitholes.

I'm not saying they'll never make a comeback, considering Spike is in the new movie, but you can tell they had no plans on upholding DK's pre-Rare legacy with one of their least successful titles at the time.

>IC
Sakurai did a game of elimination on what batch of NES characters that could be added into the game. Ice Climbers cane up to the top thanks to the fact Smash didn't have proper tag or double fighters in there games yet.
>Game and Watch
A surprise character, also the first. In fact, it's a fucking Smash OC made to rep the G&W games.
What i mean is that those batch of characters are always guaranteed to be added but it's not something that's going to be speculated or requested for the game.

Stanley, albeit niche, doesn't fit that factor and a ton of people seem to keep missing that point as they keep lumping other bad examples with G&W, R.O.B., Duck Hunt, and Piranha Plant.

>I'm aware and it pissed me off.
I love how Smash is probably the only game where a mere recognition is somehow a spit in a face, even before newer games came.
Mach Rider and Ayumi got trophies because those two weren't ever getting added to the game ever but Sakurai loved Mach Rider's looks and he unironically think Sakamoto's writing is peak with FDC.

Stanley was only lucky to get a trophy because nobody's gonna remember DKJr. and DK3 in the future. Also all the losers begging for Waluigi and Geno fronting fan requests.

Instead of accusing another Nintendo character, that got in for their own reasons, you should be more pissed off at the people begging for characters that Nintendo didn't even make for Mario.

Problem with Stanley, is do classify him as originating from Game&Watch, or Donkey Kong franchises? Because im pretty sure Greenhouse predates DK3, similarly to how Luigi first showed up in a Game&Watch before Mario Bros released.

Honestly, he was probably not added because there'd be too much pressure to make him a "Mario character" instead of just letting him be his own character. He'd be seen as little more than "that weird other Mario Brother".

He never appeared in the DKC series amd of he made a come back, it'd be in a Maro vs DK game or a Mario spinoff game.
So I'd put him as Mario series.
