>It's pretty janky. 30 is alright though.

The problem with overclocking the original Star Fox is how the game is tied to the framerate. the game music is timed to the games crap framjerate. For example, Star Fox on real hardware:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaWPTnHUEAY
(note how the intro cut sscene ends at the right music cue)

30fps overclock:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ6pWTe-Sd8

Polygon cutscene ends way before the music ends. The devs designed Star Fox around its awful framerate. In order to make Star Fox look right at 60fps, the game would have to be modified to match the timing of the new framerate. I always heard that EAD synced the first stage Corneria to Dire Straights Money for Nothing (not sure what cut). The giant robots that are carrying items in the stage are suppose to be a reference to the two CG 'movers' in the original Dire Straights music video.

Why hasn't anyone ever attempted to port Snatcher to the SEGA 32X CD?
The SEGA CD version is great, especially with the added light gun support that the PC Engine CD version lacked.
However, the SEGA CD version has much less colours and has been graphically downgraded compared to the PC Engine CD version because the Genesis can output much less colours at a time compared to the PC Engine.
There's also the issue of minor censorship in the SEGA CD version.

Restoring the uncensored content is one thing, but it would be much harder to restore the higher colour depth of the PC Engine CD to the SEGA CD without having to port it to the 32X.

They kind of did this for FarCry on Xbox, they just downsized the scope of the world for the hardware.

I have a bunch of dream games. I would like to have seen a bunch of NES and SMS games remade on the PC Engine. New Adventure Island is pretty much a remake of the first Adventure Island on the NES and it plays so well. I think Super Star Soldier might be sort of a remake of the NES game as well, not sure. There are lots of games I would have loved to see on the TG16/PCE like Contra or Aleste.

The SEGA CD version has many changes from the PC Engine CD version. Even the soundtrack is different.
Also, there's no light guns for the PC Engine, but the SEGA Genesis does.

The Genesis version is a mostly superior version of Snatcher, aside from the lower colour depth and some censorship.
It's also impossible to do a fan translation of the PC Engine CD version unless you can somehow hack the game to have properly synced English subtitles.
The SEGA CD version was specifically made to give the game an international English release.

It's a great idea hampered by poor balance and execution. One run it'll hand out the wand for free and the other it'll make you face a gleeok with 3 hearts and a wooden sword. It takes 30-60 minutes to dump a real challenge on me, at which point I'm lulled into such a stupor I can't catch my bearings before it's all over. Each room is self-contained with no real exploration and it makes me wish it randomized floor levels instead. It doesn't even seem to matter which door you take

The 9801 can do 640x400 with 16 colors and a blitter or 256 color packed pixel (for the 9821 models) at the same resolution, and especially that fucking sound chip. Earlier sound cards and Epson machines have a YM2203 (3 FM and 3 PSG channels), later machines/cards have the YM2608 (6 FM, 3 PSG, PCM) and the cost reduced YMF288. To add to that, there's the fact a lot of PC-98 game composers did not have the same styles nor influences as other FM composers.

https://youtu.be/EJ9mfjn1Ry0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV1DbMjWuFE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONCcQjgvE2s

The 9801VM, VX, and newer are like a Tandy 1000 in the sense it's an "enhanced DOS" computer, but it's incompatible with normal MS-DOS stuff. It also has a more powerful CPU than the FM Towns (socket 3 and 5 models of that are rare or overpriced), is extremely cheap (shipping costs more, I got the Pentium Pro one for $20), and the sprite art is distinct to the point there's a Twitter bot (@PC98_bot) dedicated to posting PC-98 screencaps. Put it this way, a V30 or 286 can run games that need a 386 in the PC Compatible world to run, and to make things more interesting there were games from 1996 that could run on a V30 (basically an 8086). No really, YU-NO and other VNs will run on anything but the original 9801/E/F/M.

Most models also have a BASIC interpreter in the ROM that's pretty powerful for a 1980s BASIC interpreter. Even my Pentium Pro model has it, but my 9821Nr15 lacks it. It's a technically interesting computer that's also really cheap.

Much like how you need to learn the alphabet and pronunciation of the letters of a new language before you can move on to words and grammar and stuff, you need to learn the basics of throwing Hello World or whatever on the screen. Even professional devs would spend weeks or months on this step when moving to a new platform, so don't feel bad if you don't understand everything needed to get a simple line of text on the screen in a day or two. Remember, all this information about the language, the target platform, and all the math involved, is all needed later on to do the things you want to do. If you don't understand binary and logic, you will have a real hard time figuring out how the fuck your controller reads work. If you don't know how to move data around and manipulate it, you'll never be able to make even a simple Snake or Pong game. If you have difficulties with understanding math, then movement, collision, and physics will be a nightmare for you.
On the plus side, the more you learn and remember, the easier it gets. Once you understand things like Hex, Binary, and Binary Coded Decimal, that information is usable over and over and over again. Once you get the concept of the main game loop and when you should be calling the controller or writing information to the screen/VRAM, you'll use that info on every game you make. And if you decide to work on a different platform, 90% or more of the information you've mastered can be transferred over, you just need to translate it to the new language/platform.
It's like the monkey said. It gets easier, but you have to keep at it. That's the hard part.

The NES.
I think it's a really cool system with a lot of unique gems in its library.
There's also tons of information and guides on the 6502 processor out there, due to how ubiquitous it apparently was at the time and being used on a hundred different platforms.

Also I also very recently discovered this thing called ChatGPT, and it's really accelerated my learning.
I still am following like human written guides and tutorials.

But ChatGPT helps me with the hundred little questions I want to ask the youtube tutorial maker.
It also helps me to quickly get things working without getting stuck at a brick wall googling for an hour figure out the precise syntax I need to progress. Then getting frustrated and giving up.

It's kinda like I'm being personally tutored by a human with unlimited patience.
The answers... occasionally aren't perfect, but I think finding out what the AI got wrong is fun and educational in its own right?

It still feels like my progress is painfully slow, but I've been learning 10 times faster than I did the last time I tried to learn programming.

Although I am now filled with the overwhelming anxiety that ChatGPT will go premium, because I can't go back to using google and stackoverflow for all my stupid questions!

the addressable space of the 6502 is 64KB, not the ram, only the first 2kb of that is CPU RAM. its located at $0000-$01FF, and mirrors all the way up until register space at $2000. The PPU has its own addressable space and RAM separate from the CPU.

I was following this tutorial.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrOv9FMX8xJHqMvSGB_9G9nZZ_4IgteYf

And that's just how he did his code as part of the example or whatever.
https://github.com/OneLoneCoder/olcNES/tree/master/Part%232%20-%20CPU
I know that isn't how much ram the nes had, cause he says that in the video.
I figure that it gets changed later in the series? I'm still on part 2.

The reason I like this specific tutorial/emulator is the large amount of detailed explanations and code comments and trying to make it simplistic for beginners.

It is kinda awkward what with it being written in c++ while I'm working in javascript though.

I should mention that I'm not using javascript by choice, but because of a long list of compounding issues which has led me to a position where my computer is broken and the only software I have access to for programming is a web browser.

I actually saw that JSNES emulator just earlier today and downloaded the source code, but I haven't checked it out just yet. I'm sure there's much in there that could be learned though.
