Probably still going with this one which is also the best Tales of
>no random fights
>still balances encounters nicely by making fights hard to avoid sometimes
>fun action combat instead of three niggas in a row
>very compact and amazing pacing
>many quick dungeons with actually fun puzzles and interactivity
>unusually usual protagonist
>great art and soundtrack
>archetypical JRPG story that always motivates you and doesn't pretend to be much more than it is
Perfect package, my only caveat being that it goes for the trite "Christians/angels/religion...BAD" shtick

Okay. I'm partial to the Tales sales. Those are high quality games that have a lot of great nice features absent in other jrpgs. So pick whatever you think is the best one out of those, and imo it's near the top of the list.
Let's see. I mean, there's Earthbound. I know I will get flamed for this, it hasn't been cool to talk about for years. But this game is unique and hugely influential. Often imitated, but never duplicated, not even by its sequel which I think is overrated. The way it begins, naming everything, walking around your house and home town, the meteorite and the bee talking to you, is pure magic that very few games can equal.

Good question. I am the same anon. This game doesn't get good on the first run. You end up having to restart because of the decisions you make. This is probably not the best compliment, but you can still beat the game. There is a long intro, so there isn't anything to solve the initial part. First hour is just conversation. Star Ocean 2's opening drags on and once you think it's finally started they drag you back to the first town and throw more exposition at you. I think the beauty of the game, besides the art, soundtrack, and combat, is in the ways you can interact with the game systems. You can steal from every NPC if you want to, or autistically attempt to recruit every character with no talents and then attempt to unlock those talents, including some with a .4 percent chance to unlock when using skills, to get the free 100 skill points each time. You can skip certain private actions and change your party around to make characters have different relationships. But the actual writing? Keep expectations lowered, especially with the original translation.

I played Mother 3 and found it very hard to get through. I didn't find it especially funny, and most moments fell flat to me. I dropped it probably 90-95% of the way through and just never came back because I had no interest. Not to say that it was all bad, there were a few sequences that I thought were very cool, but it was so tedious moment-to-moment that it sapped the fun out of the uniqueness. I don't really enjoy most JRPGs anyway though (OP, Chrono Trigger was an exception).
Anyway, I mention all that to say that your post was nice, and it's made me consider playing Earthbound someday.

A culmination of everything Square learned or pioneered as a graphical and auditory showpiece for brand new state of the art hardware before they started to phase out turn based games as their primary product.
This is their swansong, and in my opinion, the swansong of the genre.
On top of that, it’s one of the most compelling worlds in any video game. Tropical used future is a very unique setting, and as the kids say, kino.
Considering the point of an RPG is to absorb you into the world, this game succeeds with the highest honors.
It’s also a perfect Campbellian Hero’s Journey with a minimal amount of Japanese convoluted insanity in it’s writing which comes to plague the genre permanently.
It succeeds greatly in characterization, casting and character development.
The sphere grid was great and the gameplay is pure classic jarpig goodness, no bullshit.

Yeah it happens. For me Mother 3 got more interesting towards the end, mostly, because you start to see how it ties into Earthbound, which serves as a shocker twist. But I felt like the beginning sections take up too much of the game, and the quest for the magic keys or whatever ends up feeling rushed. I also didn't feel as attached to the characters.
Earthbound is more focused and better paced, especially in the first half when you are mostly traveling through and between cities, after which it gets more fantastical. Maybe notwithstanding that you have to grind early game. It's definitely worth trying at least for a few hours, until you get past the big city. Hope you have fun.

Your criticism of the game is very low effort so nobody is motivated to dialogue with you.
Dragoon is just strong in all areas. Its weakest points are its localization, its slower battles on account of performing the additions, and how it's overall on the more generic side. But see, two of those three criticisms are also tied into its strengths.
It's a solid game with some very strong points, and few flaws. But it's okay not to like it as well.

Some older JRPGs have some challenge, especially dungeon crawlers and TRPGs. Plenty of JRPGs you have to worry if you will be able to make it through a dungeon alive with limited resources, although that doesn't apply as often to Square games and Chrono Trigger is one of the easiest Square games.

>> No.9478778

>>9478768
I said it slightly in jest, but I agree that older games can be bullshit hard. However, I wouldn't consider TRPGs to be "true" JRPGs, just a related genre. Similarly, the limited resource approach (like FF1) doesn't make the combat hard or interesting, it just determines whether or not you need to leave the dungeon at some point or grind up cash for extra potions before you go in. Trying to nail that critical spot of "if I play perfectly and very intelligently, I can just baaarely scrape through this" is so luck dependent as to be irrelevant strategically, it's just all in your head at that point.

>> No.9478782

It's got to be something a bit more dynamic, instead of a static menu or auto-turners. Chrono trigger does have unique consequences based on enemy positioning, so the best jrpg has got to be something that brings more to the table than just flicking through windows.

Spent so much time in the Ancient Cave, I love it. It's basically an entire other game inside the game. Best sidequest ever, and I love the Ancient Cave romhacks people make for other games.

The Last Story was also amazing and pushes similar buttons. Insane hub atmosphere and character dynamics in such a small package, great combat albeit too easy

Excellent taste. The amount of work they put into Neo-Kenya feeling like a real world is ridiculous. Some of my favorite NPC conversations in any game. Figuring out how to find all the animals for the space ark and the way the devs incorporate game mechanics like seasons or even Birdline into the world is really neat. The three different scenarios tying into each other is something you can't really do outside of gaming. It's cool to see an innocuous phrase in Scenario A turn into something horrifying in B. Having the big fakeout with Elisabeth and Neku where you don't even fight them followed by the disturbing actual final bossfight in Scenario A or Dr. Hitler begging you to choose his cloned daughter after murdering your girlfriend's family and grafting her father's enormous black arm on her in Scenario B are unforgettable moments. And the voice acting from Linda, Dr. Emory, and Hume's VAs are top-notch. The whole space ark idea is great. Only real complaint is I wish they'd utilized the four-directional combat a little better. Great game.

I just read a very brief spoiler-free synopsis of the premise, and I'm extremely interested in checking this out. Is it available in English? What's the best version of it? Seems like they vary in censorship level and content.

It's not available in English, unfortunately. It's been in fantranslation hell for years but supposedly they're almost done. The Saturn version is the definitive version but they're bringing over the PSX one. I'm a little worried about how they will translate some things, I hope they don't screw it up.

Are you a native speaker? I've never consumed quite enough Japanese media to brush off my books from high school and try to push forward with it. I enjoyed the language, but I didn't go that far with it and it's supposed to be one of the most difficult to learn, if not the hardest, for an English native speaker. Never been sure it's worth the time commitment, seeing as my rudimentary skills were sufficient to enjoy vacationing there.

I'm not a native speaker, I learned to read it by playing old JRPGs and looking up everything and making flashcards. I've just seen some of the screens they've produced so far and I don't like them translating Ken's nickname as "Sir Lates-a-Lot," but maybe the rest is better.
