I would only play retro stuff sporadically in the past decade or so, but starting in 2020, I began playing more often. The holiday season really brings the urge crashing in on me, now. From November through January, I do almost nothing but.
Spyro in particular seems to set it off. The original Ratchet trilogy too, for the similar design philosophy. I played both trilogies a ton as a kid, often beating one or two of the games in a single sleepover along with my friend.

It depends on what weird new toy I buy myself, in 2020 I played Sonic 1 since the handheld I bought had it built in, last year I played mostly DKC2 for the same reason. This year who knows, I'm thinking some GBC games and Castlevania Bloodlines since I plan on getting one of those cheap 1000 in 1 emulator handhelds, pic related. I do tend to go back to DKC2 a lot though, as well as a lot of the games I got for Christmas as a kid, like 6-Pak, DKC3, and Sonic & Knuckles. Though this post is reminding me that I haven't played any N64 games in a long time...

My girlfriend and I both got Covid back in November of 2020 and we were both quarantined from work for a solid four weeks. Paid, thankfully, but horribly sick for the first week and a half. I got better quicker and I occupied our time by playing Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. Now whenever snow hits our area she wants me to play it again. Plan on starting it in a few days. Other games we usually play around this time of year are Ms. Pacman Maze Madness and Spyro Enter the Dragonfly. I personally have an attachment to that game because as a kid I was really poor, and my original Spyro games had been lost and I couldn't afford to get new copies, so one of the last Christmases I had with my gram before she died, she got me a secondhand Gamecube and a few games, EtD being one of them. She knew how much I loved Spyro when I was younger, and I was happy to have any title at all again, so I played the whole game over the next few visits while she watched. Sorry for blogposting. I remember having an intense fight with someone INSISTING the backgrounds weren't prerendered by some weird ass semantic technicality in the AITD games. God that guy was fucking stupid. Pre-rendered, drawn, the point is they didn't use polygonal real time graphics and used a 2D image with 3D actors over it. I don't see Santa Claus Junior being discussed, even if it's yet another christmasy platformer. It's actually pretty competent and later stages get toothy. Artstyle is also comfy, the sequel though went for more "Extreme 2000s"/Tim Burton look, which lost some of the charm.
