Hello /vr/, anyone know of the best place to buy retro Japanese games?

I've looked through amazon.jp, which looks pretty trustworthy and has fair prices, but I do not if it holds the same quality it's american counterparts does.

Any advice is appreciated and more so if it comes from experience.

>> No.945341

I buy them all from ebay. I buy Super Famicom games complete and the quality is always really good and the prices aren't bad.

>> No.945348

Mandarake.

>> No.945351

You can't order games from Amazon. co.jp without a proxy.
Use either eBay, yahoo actions Japan with a proxy like From Japan or rakuten.

>>945351
Why not? I can't get them to ship to USA?

>> No.945363

I get them from ebay, Yamatoku classic and hit-japan are pretty goo sellers.

You are better off buying a bunch of games at once to save on shipping.

>> No.945369

>>945360

No.

YAJ and Amazon.jp only ship to Japanese addresses. You'll need a middleman service like Yokatta.

>hit-japan

This is actually the guy I usually buy from. I've never had a complaint.

>> No.945406

>>945363
i can second hit-japan and yamatoku. hit-japan uses the same photo for each auction of a given game, though, so you have to guess the quality based on their letter ratings. in general, japanese games are kept in excellent quality, anyway

rakuten is another good resource

>> No.945410

ebay or japangamestock work nicely for me I've gotten lots of great stuff for pretty cheap and no issues (if you really want your package safe shell out for the expensive shipping though).

Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful.

Much apreciated.

You could also try to find a middleman directly in Japan ie a friend etc.

If Ebay use sellers like Yamatoku, Hit-Japan, Nippotopia, Tokyotoyfactory (if you want mint games and shell out a shitload of money!!) etc etc

If buying expensive stuff I would use a middleman and buy directly from Yahoo Japan Auction.

You can save sometimes up to 50% of the money.

OR save a year or two for a trip to Japan.

It worth it. You'll pay like 50 cent for a game that is sold for 15 dollars on Ebay.

Protip: Marry a Japanese girl and have everthing send to her parents. Which will then send it via EMS to you for free in exchange with a good bottle of wine every 4 months.

Ebay has suprisingly good prices for JP games. I bought mario rpg for $5 shipped not too long ago. Saw chrono trigger go today for about $8. Most of the people tht bid on ebay see that it's japanese and just ignore it. Mostly because they dont realize that with some quick work of a pair of pliers you can play SF games on your ntsc snes.

>> No.946207

I've noticed most RPGs are pretty damn cheap. Saw a lot of ~15 RPGs go for something like $50.

What I want to know is: What's a good price for RockmanX2/3 carts?

This sounds fantastic. Do you think it will be a problem that I'm already married or can I do like a Wolverine thing?

The problem is most of us ameriburgers can't read moonrunes, so RPGs are out of the question. I do have a japanese super mario kart though the US copy from my childhood got lost somehow and I got it for $6 shipped

X2 is ~$80
X3 is ~$120

Those are ntsc prices

Japanese versions should be like 15-30ish depending on the seller. You should be able to find them for that.

Protip: the lowest you can pay the better.

Before I left Japan last year, I was in a collector shop known for overpricing things in Tokyo. They had two complete copies of X2, one was 4200¥ and the other which was slightly less good condition but still very good was 4000¥. Their copy of X3, complete, was 7000¥.

In a Book-Off I found a copy of X3 cart for 500¥. Take these prices for what you will

In america we use dollars not yen. So we cant take these prices for anything unless we convert them. Which I don't feel like doing.

Why would you buy Japanese imports from America? They take the cost of the average Japanese selling price and multiply it by 5, hoping that someone who is too dumb to press that little button that says "search worldwide" will come across it and buy it because it's RARE JAPANESE IMPORT WOW

I have a friend in Japan and I buy Super Famicon games with box+manual very often from amazon shops. I don't pay more than 3000¥ unless I really, really want the game, then I consider buying cart only or paying up to 4000¥ for box+manual.

For the price range I usually pay(1700~2000¥) I get boxes which are undamaged~lightly creased, and manuals that have little to no scratches. The carts are all in perfect state and run flawlessly.

games? Because I've gotten games for much cheaper than that.
I payed $12 for a mint chrono trigger complete, and like $8 for Dragon Quest 6 in the same condition.
I bought other loose carts for dollars the shipping is the only expensive part.

I also bought some complete PS1 games for around 2000¥, the more expensive one being a SotN with some extra stuff in very good condition for 2700¥.

Awesome, good to know.
I'll finally be able to play X2 on actual hardware for the first time in about 2-3 weeks.

>> No.947923

Is there any adapter that lets you play super famicom games on SNES without playing with the hardware?

>> No.947957

>>947923
Assuming you're talking about an NTSC-U SNES, all you need is an x-acto knife/other sharp blade and a pair of pliers to remove the little tabs in the cartridge slot.

If you consider that "playing with the hardware", I know there are different cartridge copiers that accommodate SuperFami carts.

It worth it. You'll pay like 50 cent for a game that is sold for 15 dollars on Ebay.

This was true some years ago but not really anymore. Most used game shop prices here are comparable with what you see online.

But if you're coming to Japan anyway, by all means stock up. Used games here are usually in incredible condition and are often resealed with grading scales and notes about the completeness of each copy.

there are third party adapters. i used to have one--a "Super Eamioom<-> Super NE8 Game Converter" for all my super eamioom games
i got it with a couple other things for like $10 on ebay, but they put a screw through one of the traces on the board so i had to solder a wire to it to bypass the hole they made. people are asking insane prices for such adapters now for some reason, so you'll just have to keep an eye out for someone to list their personal adapter
a game genie will also work as will i think a super ufo pro 8

still has better prices on most stuff than Ebay I'd say.

>>948067

last time I was there in winter of 2011 and still found a lot of good deals.

very expensive stuff at retro shops can be equally expensive but the common /uncommon stuff is still cheaper than what people want for on Ebay or in forums.

I paid 24000 Yen for a copy of Waku Waku 7 AES - people on ng.con and Ebay charge up to 450€ for it.
sure SP and Trader and Surugaya are expensive but still better than the Internet I'd say.

and yeah you cant beat Book-Off - but it's always a game of luck to find the right thing there.
