T3 did 3 things right: 1) it was fun, 2) it was accessible, 3) it had good graphics. Devs took the VF formula and made it way more cool. They also understood well that so-called "FGC community" is just a bunch of nerds and most normal people cannot even do a quarter circle motion.
With all that said, if you play T3 today, it's a mess. Half the characters feel useless and/or unfinished. Jin, Ogre, Law and a few others wipe the floor with the rest. Half the people who played it just mashed buttons with Eddie. If you learn the game, you'll realize just how broken it is.

Still the best Tekken. Actually, the only good Tekken:

>best movement
>no walls
>lowest damage juggles
>fewest launchers
>no input lag
>universal 8 frame low jab
>universal low kick is plus on hit
>some characters have 8 frame jabs
>shortest move lists
>least homogenized characters
>no shitty mechanics (staggered lows, quick recovery, homing moves, bound/cockscrew, df low parry, armor moves and all that shit copy pasted from street shitter)
>strangely enough the best roster (despite no bruce and no kazuya)

Good backward movement tends to be self-regulating. Ironically, walls or ring outs are only "needed" when the movement is not good enough, i.e. when one player cannot move backward too much, a finite ring prevents the other player from abusing this and turning the whole game into continuously pushing the first player into the indefinite "wall", so to speak, of his restricted movement. Whereas good backward movement immediately engenders reliable two-time (two beats) counters, voiding the incoming attack with movement and landing a counter or whiff punish, such that moving backward too much is harmful to both players.

I swear nobody here played VF ever because by this moment you all should've realized that they are nothing alike. It's SF and MK level of difference. you're probably right with the 3 things from a casual perspective but i would say the right things were more technical details. 3 is such a huge leap compared to 2 and that's what i would personally put highly more.
i fully agree with the second part. this game is such a mess compared to it's successors. Jin is also way above the 2nd and 3rd place (Ogre and Xiaoyu). A single character dominating can also be a lot of fun if it's a mirror match with the right character (and Jin WAS the perfect character for that) but in long terms it's absolutely not worth it.

Dude when this genre was first taking off combos were a glitch they left in for the hell of it thinking nobody would be able to pull it off in a real match. Get off your high horse, casually mashing buttons against your friends for a laugh was absolutely the way the devs intended the majority of the playerbase to engage with these games.

Nice read.
As far as I know, Tekken 3 was the first game that managed to outsell SF2 and the only one that did it in the 90s. But sales aside, VF2 was just as important for evolving the genre.

>> No.9467290

>>9462068
this wasn't apparent to me until I revisited it unblinded by the nostalgia bias. compared to Tekken 5, it's just not a game you want to go back to outside of historical curiosity.

>> No.9467357

>>9467290
Tekken 5 is just a worse Tekken 7 without online playerbase. Not worth going back to, especially when VF4 exists on the same console.

>> No.9467364

>>9467357
After Tekken 6, a lot of things changed making Tekken 7 something else. VF4 on PS2 became redundant when Final Tuned exists.

>> No.9467407

>>9465557
No, he's right. Tekken might be more credible in the FGC but what a niche section of gamers likes has little to do with "cultural significance"

Mortal Kombat was a legit pop culture phenomenon, Tekken never was anything like that. Normies and people who are just into "geek culture" know who Scorpion and Sub Zero are because MK has permeated that space, the only people who know who Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama are are fighting game fans.

>> No.9467427

>>9467364
If you are Japanese, then maybe. Final Tuned never had a home port and most people got to play it only recently with emulation, after they already played VF5.
I think the point of this thread is the industry and genre significance. World Warriors and Champion Edition were way more significant for the fighting games genre than Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo even though both are jank in comparison.

>> No.9467441

>>9467407
I bet Mortal Kombat theme from the movie has more cultural significance than MK games themselves and people only know the character names because they are literally sampled in it.

>> No.9467502

>>9467441
I mean that just has to do with the fact that a lot of kids growing up liked that movie, and a lot of kids who liked that movie watched it because they liked Mortal Kombat games. Song is popular cause movie was popular cause games were popular.

I haven't read the thread but the tekken3 schizo is starting to become annoying, he keeps posting the same shit in every fighting thread, even if tekken is a nice game, it almost seems like a flaseflag thing from a guy who hates tekken 3 and wants people to attack the game because of relation with the annoying schizo. Probably just a regular real schizo and not a mastermind falseflagger though

I will always wonder why they made Yoshimitsu go from "guy with demon mask" to "cyborg ninja with glowing katana". I heard they got the inspiration for his helmet shape here from some ninja movie Namco co-produced in the 80s.
