Brutal Doom does it better than MSX. MSX is trying to be too much like a modern shooter. Whats up with that crysis hud and halo aiming reticule? A good mod compliments a game, a bad one tries to make it something it isnt

brutal doom doesn't sells himself as a modern fps crap, of course it improves doom, both in visuals (and tarantino-esque ketchup) and gameplay (zombies with real bullets instead of hitscans, the chaingun feeling like a heavy weapon...). i really love it (and it makes nazi themed wads interesting)

Shoot things until they die.

This sounds like sarcasm, but that's really it. Part of what makes Doom so wonderful is its simplicity--you don't need any hidden gameplay tips and tricks, it's just you, a shotgun, and your enemies.
All it takes is a lot of practice.

>the chaingun feeling like a heavy weapon
Never has one opinion been so wrong in the history of wrong opinions. The chaingun is the worst part of Brutal Doom. It sucks against what should be the best situation for it, large crowds of weak enemies. It's not too good for bigger enemies, either. It sounds like shit, with a quieter sound than the vanilla chaingun. It's damn near impossible to aim at range due to the bizarre recoil. The assault rifle hits harder and more accurately and the plasma rifle is better for dealing with crowds. The chaingun feels like a weak piece of shit.

>> No.938685

>>938682
Fuck, I didn't see that.

>> No.938697

>>938637
There are a few things you can do to improve your overall performance:

-Players tend to go for SSG Swingshots since everyone's speeding around anyway and breaking momentum is a bad thing for your evasion (but you've noticed that). Getting gud at one-shotting people with the SSG consistently will make you easily 60% better on scoreboards

-Knowledge of the current map is just as important as landing your shots. Knowing routes and locations of items for any competitive gamemode will only help and can put you in an advantageous position over another player of equal skill in terms of navigation and aim. This is another one of those things that will come with time if you make sure to take in everything you see on the maps you see in frequent rotation.

-Learn to SR50 if you're interested in playing modes like CTF, it'll give you that tiny extra edge. Here's a link for more info and instructions (Zandronum):
http://zandronum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=469

-Practice with every weapon, because you'll find yourself in a lot of situations where you wish you had a "better" one so being good at them all negates that. Burst-firing with the chaingun at range is a killing machine (no aim penalty after one bullet, spread starts if you hold down your fire button) and loading up hallways with rockets will net kills on players blindly charging around. If you haven't already, try reading the BFG FAQ as well because the real operation of that gun is not entirely straightforward:
http://www.gamers.org/docs/FAQ/bfgfaq/

-Try to find players who have been at it for a while to be buddies with and learn from. You'll lose to them embarrassingly but they'll be able to tell you exactly how to get better in place of these general ideas

happy fragging

So I got a copy of final doom at a garage sale. Apparently it belonged to a 12 year old kid before I got it, and he left a folded up note in it that had a plan for more episodes (e4-e6). The enemies were supposed to be "Doomans" which were demons fused with humans. It's pretty strange.

I disagree. I think it aims pretty well at midrange if you're not using the alt-fire, and either way it mows weak enemies down. Plus, its ammo capacity is doubled. While the rifle is better at long range and has a higher per-shot damage, the reloading makes it a very bad idea to use it against large numbers of enemies. The plasma rifle is definitely good at killing lots of things that are a safe distance away, but the self-damage in Brutal Doom makes it dangerous to use in tight spaces.

>Can punch hard enough (under influence of performance-enhancement) to make human bodies explode into piles of unidentifiable goop and bones
>can perform this punch as a mere jab, practically a kenshiro performance in punching power
>runs and punches, shoots, etc. indefinitely, suggesting infinite stamina even under extreme physical duress
>100% perfect accuracy with any weapon
>suffers absolutely no effect from recoil of any weapon, either tribute to his incredible strength or an amazing reaction time, though considering he can deftly maneuver across narrow platforms at car speeds, it could be both
>can fire any weapon, even a high-powered rocket launcher, continuously at fast speeds, while suffering no ill effect

Speaking of the extinguisher...I'm having a hard time figuring out *how* to translate the behaviour of it in sprite form. I have the code for it already (The Phobos Dust Blower from that old weapon resource WAD in the archive works fine) What I want to do now is to get the "spraying" part done perfectly.

Should I add a white "cloud" sorta like in pic related? Or I should just leave it like that?

Is there a way to spawn particles? I think a particle fountain type thing would look best.

Or you could create a bunch of mini projectiles that only extend a short distance before dying. Using a_spawnitemex you could throw a bunch out in a cone spread.

AAAAALRIGHTY THEN, WHERE SHOULD I START?

>Nobody, and I mean, NOBODY likes to go left and right, collecting the items and weapons before going to an IoS fight or a slaughterfest. Even Go 2 It has almost all the weapons and ammo right to the side of the spawnpoint before you hit the switch and start unleashing hell. That's why in every single IoS replacements there has been a certain pattern when it comes to placing all the stuff: SURROUND THE FUCKING PLAYER WITH THEM. A circle movement is more comfortable and easier to do than going left and right in a dumb manner. Oh, and the backpack is placed almost at the end of the corridor, so if you go straight to the bossfight before collecting more items, say your prayers.

>The stage is almost exactly like in the WIP video. The sky got replaced with the PSX version of the hellish sky., which looks nice. Now, some of the items (mainly, the only TWO blue armors in the map) are placed in such a manner that the only way you can reach them is by jumping to them (as a matter of fact the whole level -in the mapping design, that is- is not vanilla-friendly) There's a smart move you can do after warping to the boss map in which you just go to the right and land almost close to a soulsphere so you don't need to catch up the one that triggers the IoS script. As you may have imagined (heh...) there's a considerable ammount of rocket ammo placed all over the map, oh, and there's a secret megasphere placed in a corner from the map, but like I said, is completely unreachable if you're playing with vanilla settings (you need to do quite some milimetrical jumps to reach it)

NOW, Let's talk about SgtMark's take on the Icon of Sin.

>Right after spouting the worldwide-known line, it straight goes to an almighty scream which makes damage and renders you from the astounding quantity of FOURTY-EIGHT HEALTH POINTS. And there's no point of taking cover since the whole scream can be heard (and being felt) in ALL over the map

Why should someone FORCE the player to receive damage from an attack? What's the point of reaching 200/200 if you're going to strike me with a stupid attack with 100% chance of happening? This whole 48 HP thing will be all over the place just like "seven rockets" is, I can guarantee it.

Okay, so. Right after he finishes screaming, he can take two directions. He can start spitting cubes, or shooting mancubi's fireballs. Either way, after doing that, he starts shooting yellow straight and fast fireballs which can blow you up if you don't take cover fast enough. If you start moving around, and almost being close to him, he will invoke those thunders from the WIP video who try to follow and strike you.

Now, his weak point relies right below his jaw, near the center of his thorax. If you're smart enough you can notice a little gap which pretty much confirms this.

Moving around the stage is quite tricky, because you can end up below the whole altar of sacrifice, and you must climb up to reach a good height and start shooting back. NOW, almost right after the middle of his HP he will start sending those yellow fireballs more stronger than ever, and sometimes you can't dodge 'em AT ALL, because you just simply don't see it coming at all.

Oh, and by the way, check this. Straight from his decorate

the first one isn't too bad, it's hardly high literature but it's a video game novel. at least the characters follow the game levels, references are made directly to map features like the soulsphere on e1m3 and the wall of twisted faces at the end of e2m4. you have to take into account some understandable artistic license like the addition of other characters - it would be strange to have an entire book be one guy alone with his thoughts, i suppose.

the second one when they get back to earth is questionable at best, and full of mormons, although you might like it if you have a fetish for teenage girl computer hackers.

the third and fourth have almost nothing to do with doom and i just couldn't be bothered with them.

I listen to my mind. My mind makes the music, I use what I know. I focus on the map I make. I've not finished.
I make sure that every part of the level suits the song. I attempt to make design choices based on grade-scale. The full picture.
It's DOOM, but you need to know where you are! So far I've partially completed 2 maps, working on a third. They're all set in hell. I don't think people quite understand cool a game is for being set in hell, with all that cool stuff. There's the traditional marble hell, wood, and rock and then there's the fucked up guts part of hell.
I've been playing through PlayStation DOOM to give me some great sector color ideas.

Yes, I think of the simpletons of "it's just DOOM" but I know people appreciate decent design, especially when it doesn't negatively impact the gameplay.

That's not true. I know because I played around with it for the spider's altdeath in fractal doom.

ACTOR BFGBall and ACTOR BFGExtra both allow "DamageType" actor properties. In fact ACTOR BFGExtra already has DamageType "BFGSplash" in its definition.

If you want to make the cybers immune to the BFG they shoot just make the BFGBall and BFGExtra they use have DamageType "CyberBFG" (or whatever damage name) in their definitions and then put DamageFactor "CyberBFG", 0 in the Cyber Demon definition and that will do the trick. You don't have to define the damage type anywhere else for this to work, and it will work in zdoom, gzdoom and zand just fine.

One more thing I forgot to add:

You can't use A_FireBFG for the Cyber's attack, you'll have to use A_CustomMissile and specify a custom BFGBall for the Cyber Demon, and then have that custom BFGBall have an A_BFGSpray that specifies a custom flash for the Cyber Demon that then has the custom damage type. Otherwise the Cyber Demon will be immune to the player's BFG.

One more thing: you can do the same for bullet hitscan attacks too. Just specify a custom bulletpuff and give that a custom damage type.

From what I can tell it's nothing malicious, though the acs is obscured. If it fucked with my settings and I didn't notice I can just take a minute to reinstall zdoom I guess.

Even so, it's still probably not worth the download.

The first level is just two bruiser barons reskinned as shreks which aren't animated except for some of their attacks which have O mouths and when they die when they get unhappy faces. There are also a multitude of bees/flies. The level looks like it was made in 1994 on a hex editor, and there are some HOM in a swamp portion. There are multiple radioactive suits even though none of the floors are damaging. You get the ssg and chaingun and shotgun immediately at the start of the level. There is no way to end the first level, you have to use the console to go to map 02.

Map 02 also looks like it was made in 1994 on a hex editor, but at least there aren't any HOM. It starts off with some stairs leading down to a blood pit where 3 bruiser shreks attack you from an upper level. Behind them are 3 switches which are unreachable except by flying or using noclip. They open up 3 corridors which release a multitude of bees and one or two lost souls. One of the corridors has a wall that looks normal but humping it ends the level, after which the intermission screen before map07 is displayed before the end sequence is displayed.

I believe you're looking for Sikkmod.

There are also a couple texture packs you're supposed to use together to get the most out of it. One was called Wulfen, and the name of the other escapes me.

It has parallax occlusion mapping, too, which adds a lot of depth to what would otherwise be flat textures by distorting the image as you move around it according to the relative heights of the different parts of the texture.

Sikkmod
Monoxead textures
Wulfen textures
bog decal mod (ejected shells stay)
Ungibbable makes corpses stay, but I can't remember if turning the burn delay up in sikkmod was better
Trent Reznor sounds (You need to edit some of the files in this if there is a particular sound you don't want to replace with Trent's; sorry but I have forgotten which files and how.)
Venom's HD menus
Sound>musical>d3theme.ogg is the main menu theme. If you make that folder inside your sikkmod folder and put any .ogg with that name inside it, your new music will play at the main menu.

The stuff I used for RoE is basically the same, but you have to find RoE equivalents.

"Stop liking what I don't like"

All I was fucking doing was asking why it was disliked, I understand different people like different things, and I was just curious of the point of view of people who dislike brutal doom. I respect that you guys dislike it, and >>944154 makes some really good points. But Jesus, is the hostility really necessary just because I'm curious? I thought /vr/ was supposed to be better than /v/.

I don't think brutal doom is the best thing since sliced bread, I've played much more enjoyable wads than it, like Russian Overkill, and while I'm not a huge fan of Project MSX, I do appreciate the idea of mixing modern features with classic gameplay. I enjoy brutal doom because of how stupidly mindless it is, there's something satisfying about blowing enemies into chunks with a minigun, but it seems you can't talk about it here without being shit on by doom purists.

Skipping middle ground, would you rather be talking to people who think it's the best DOOM mod ever of all time? and completely re-invents DOOM?
I don't think you would like it much. It's nothing to do with "DOOM purists", for fuck's sake. It's to do with people not liking something that is both
a) not as good as people make it out to be and b) not really that good in the first place
I hate all the shit it does, I don't like the pace changing, the lack of balance for either side and not being able to see what the hell is going on through all the gore because it distorts your perspective. my latest ridiculous thing with brutal doom is that i can fairly consistently one-shot barons with super shotgun headshots.

it's not all bad, it's an interesting way to play maps you've played vanilla a hundred times. but you do have to pick maps that work well with it.

the most irritating feature is the blood covering the screen and constant drip-drip-drip at low health. fatalities are stupid but i just stopped using them unless i really need the health (don't forget, they silently cancel invulnerability!)

I've actually been playing it with Beautiful Doom Monsters, which does the same thing, more blood and stuff, though I do like the look of ketchup. Beautiful Doom Monsters can totally fuck the game up at times though, for some odd reason.

Finished two more. The computer malfunction part of the one on the right looks a lot more fluid in game, but gif has <4 fps

I'm aiming to have most computer/control panels in this WAD animated, and not to reuse any comp/control textures except for simple stuff like door lock indicators. Some of them will have readable portions of the screen which will related to nearby surroundings and what the player will need to do to advance through the level.

Even if I don't finish I'll have a nice animated texture pack to give to the community.

This mod seemingly manages to take every terrible modern feature and shove it into an old game, creating the worst possible scenario: a game with poor gameplay *and* outdated eyecandy. 947459

No I'm not dead, but I had some major computer issues and had to entertain relatives from out of the country for a month.

FKER has been updated to 1.22

Changes are:

- Changed Autoshotgun sprite, looks way better now
- Buff/nerfed plasma pistol, you can now burst fire with any amount of charge, and it charges a bit faster. However it does less damage (though more consistent damage) and there's a longer delay before recharging begins if you fire it single-shot.
- Added Doubletap and Tripletap modes to both versions

Uhh, well, there's an info.txt inside of it, but the mod shouldn't be too complex that you can't figure it out. Basically it swaps around a lot of monsters for similar types, while trying to stay as close as possible to vanilla Doom's balance and art style. There are a few more weapons, and the game is slightly harder on average. Just try it out, if you're confused about something post back. I'm going to be out for around half an hour, but I'll answer when I get back.

If it's cheap, might as well.

It's in a bundle, I'll have to ask the guy but by averaging the price he's asking for the whole thing it's probably 5€ a cartridge. Also it's supposedly sealed, hope the guy isn't a jew about it, because I honestly don't care for factory seals, same shit to me with or without it. Boxed or not doesn't bother me much either, all I care is for the goddam games.

It's funny how much of this game I played and I still don't own a legit copy of it.
