If you haven't read Game Over by David Sheff, I would recommend it. It's about Nintendo but is actually quite comprehensive so there's a lot if interesting tidbits about other manufacturers and publishers as well, and definitely has much of what you're looking for.

You unironically can't beat NES era nintendo. They reached peak scum at that time. Here's a short list
>limit on how many games you can make per year
>yearly limit on cart number shared between all your releases
>can't create ports to competing platforms
>have to pay for nintendo seal on top of all other fees
>1/3 of profit goes to nintendo on top of cart fees
>have to disclose cheats in first order to nintendo so they can use them to profit from their magazine and hotline
>official guides have to pay nintendo a share from profit.

>JS: And xxxx sent thugs to threaten your sister, to prevent you from testifying?
>HN: They only abducted her, but saying they only abducted her doesn't make it right, does it? That by itself is unforgivable. At the time, she had just graduated high school and was a university student. They did it to make me stop cooperating with Nintendo.
>HN: In Japan, you have these evil companies that always crop up, and unlike the West, in Japan there's a perception that "play" is bad, the opposite of hard work. So amusement-oriented industries inevitably become infested with evil companies and ties to the underworld....
>.... The only companies that have been able to do business while staying clean are probably Nintendo and Namco.
>HN: <laughs> I think many people would do something similar in that situation. I don't know how much you know about xxxx, but are you aware of the "quarantine room" problem from around the year 2000? They would put employees alone in a room and give them absolutely nothing to do, in order to make them resign. xxxx did that, and former xxxx employees sued them and won.

Some of these things were not enforced, or stopped being enforced after a while once they realized the market was doing too well. See how many games Capcom and Konami released on NES and Famicom, even if you don't count Konami's Ultra Games it goes beyond some of these limits easily.

The only factor the crash had on the market was Nintendo being smart about making and keeping money while actually pushing fresh products, when Atari showed that they were anything but.
They would most likely still have dominated that period, or at least still been the leader by a large margin, even without all the shady and cutthroat shit they actually got up to (it would likely not have changed Sega catching up with them with the Genesis and Atari creating the Jaguar, or something equally stupid).

try sitting around for 8 hours doing nothing. and i mean literally nothing. dont think you can bring some video games or whatever. theyll probably monitor you as well.
looking at my current apprenticeship where i have to click a button and wait up to multiple hours for the system to respond and have nothing to do in the meantime, i can tell you, you start to get really mushy in the brain. i bet there are actual health risks involved from doing practically nothing all day every day

The only account I've ever heard of someone getting quarantined in japan claimed that he had to sit up straight at his cubicle in silence staring at his computer monitor for his entire shift doing absolutely nothing and that his superviser would shout at him if he got caught moving or looking away from the screen.

It was some whittu piggu that moved to japan and they did it because he wouldn't work overtime. And yeah it's not good for your mental health.

its not going to look good if the apprentice is sitting on his phone all day. doesnt stop me from doing it anyways but i put my phone away the second someone enters the room to not make it too obvious.
and yes, even then you start to go really dumb in the brain. its also just depressing to know how you have to waste away your precious youth doing nothing of value, both for you and your company, and yet, by the time i get home i have maybe 2 hours of my day left before i have to go to bed and i have to use that time to walk the dog because no one else even thinks of doing that, i have to eat, i have to shower. i dont have time for anything anymore but i sit around doing nothing for 11 hours all day. its depressing
