Thinking of diving in and finally beating this game after so many stalled attempts. What do I need to know before going in? Should I level up on stat and focus on it more than the others (attack, magic, life)? Should I avoid picking up extra lives until the end of the game? Where are the best areas to level grind outside of temples? I really want to give it my best shot this time and not stall again at the gauntlet that is Death Mountain.

Talk to everyone, preferably take notes.
>Should I level up on stat and focus on it more than the others (attack, magic, life)?
No.
>Should I avoid picking up extra lives until the end of the game?
Yes
>Where are the best areas to level grind outside of temples?
Depends so much on where you are. But "close to a city where you can heal if shit goes south" in general.

The game really isn't as hard as people like to pretend.

just look up ahead of time whats needed to fight the penultimate boss because the game gives no indication and just trolls you hard if you dont happen upon it (most players wont)

Don't bother levelling up health or magic early game until your attack makes most enemies much easier.
Don't give up on Death Mountain.
Look shit up when you get stuck.
Have beaten Zelda 1 & Metroid before beginning.
Enjoy.

This.

Pay attention to your exp when you beat a temple.

>> No.9451376

You can use the hammer to clear wooded squares on the overworld. You will meed to do this once to find a hidden area someone tells you to go find.

This ability of the hammer is only mentioned in the booklet, so if you play the game without reading that you’d never know about it until you start trying EVERYTHING out of desperation.

Good luck, anon. Muster your determination because the Great Temple is far tougher than Death Mountain. On that note yes, you should probably wait to pick up 1-ups until near the end.

The best place to grind is the forest near the hidden village. There are two orange moblins you can easily kill for decent exp and you can heal in town.

Since grinding doesn't take long I recommend following the game's normal level ups but if you want to focus on one it should probably be magic.

Only collect the tools from the temples (candle, glove, raft, etc) then exit them without officially beating them. Every temple you beat gives you an instant level up.

Since the earliest levels require small amounts of exp, it is best to save completing the temples for when your levels for attack/magic/health are 6/6/6. So focus your first 18 levels on experience earned from enemies and p bags. The last 6 levels require quite a bit of exp so doing this helps you avoid the grind. The only downside is you having to revisit 5 of the temples twice (just go into the last temple at 8/8/7).

If at the first temple you have 210/250 exp for next level, beating that temple will only give you 40 pts to bring you to your next level. If you revist it later at 300/2500 exp, beating it will give you 2200 exp which saves on grinding.

Also, if you ever find a red magic potion but are already full on magic use that opportunity to get a free health refill by using your healing spell then getting the potion to restore your magic.

If you dont have enough magic to heal before getting the potion, hit the potion with your sword and activate the life spell during the magic re-fill animation. It will continue to fill your magic up even after you heal to almost full.

>What do I need to know before going in?

I've finished this game a bunch of times but I have no idea what to tell somebody who asks this about it. Why would you need to know something before going in?? You already know that it's an NES game and that you suck at it. So you're gonna suck again, and if you try hard you'll probably eventually succeed anyway, but if you don't then you won't. How could you not already know all of this? What is the game going to do to punish you if you blunder around and figure things out for yourself (i.e., "play" it as if it were a toy or a game)? Maybe it'd be fun, and that would bother you somehow?

OP here, got to the beginning of the fifth palace (Palace on the Sea). It really does seem like once you get around level 4-5 for all stats and just bite the bullet through Death Mountain and getting the hammer, the game does become more manageable, especially once to get the downward thrust, combat genuinely gets pretty fun. I've found two spots in the palaces that are great for grinding:

In Midoro Palace grinding on the floating serpent heads in that first hallway to the left of the first elevator, they come through that corridor endlessly and they're each worth 20 XP, and its easy to keep bouncing off them and killing them with the downward thrust without taking damage, you can basically grind there endlessly until you get to whatever level of XP you want.

And the Mago that appear in Palace on the Sea in that long hallway with the Bubbles, they're easy to take out with the downward thrust and worth 100-200 XP each, then take out all the Bubbles in that hallway for 50 XP each, easily get 1300-1500 XP in just that area alone.

The game definitely could have used a fast-pass / warp earlier in the game, especially once you unlock Eastern Hyrule. I think if they had allowed fast-travel or warping once Eastern Hyrule is unlocked, a lot of the complaints about backtracking after getting a "Game Over" would have less validity.

The hammer can also be used to destroy forest tiles. The game does not indicate this at any point and you must know this.

>Should I level up on stat and focus on it more than the others (attack, magic, life)?
The Japanese version actually heavily compels you to level up your stats evenly because all your stats revert to the level of your lowest level stat when you game over.
Therefore, I think it's fair to say the game is designed with even leveling in mind.

>>9450968
You can actually skip the level-up crystal shrine after you defeat a boss so you don't have to waste a level up on a stat with a lower exp requirements.
Save the level-up crystal shrine for later when you start back at 0 if you want to level up a state (i.e. attack) with a high exp cost.

I personally recommend skipping health and magic initially and focus on only leveling up your attack.

>> No.9453373

Health exp to next level
50 (lvl 2)
150 (lvl 3)
400 (lvl 4)
800 (lvl 5)
1500 (lvl 6)
2500 (lvl 7)
4000 (lvl 8)

Use the 6 Palace crystals to get the last 2 levels in your three stat categories. As you can see just by Health stat the exp for level 7 & 8 is pretty high. If you use the crystals when you are at low levels it would be a waste.

I grew up with the NES. It was a social experience. Your friends and acquaintances talked about how to get through certain areas and sometimes even shared maps and notes. I knew people that called the Nintendo hotline when they were at wit's end. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power back then too. The only time you played a game blind was when you rented some shit like Bayou Billy from the local movie rental store and then got stuck on the first few stages until you had to return it. It's such a shit way to play most of these games. Having a few tips and pointers, making it a social experience even if it's on /vr/ is not that far off from the original social experience. It's far better than using a comprehensive guide or video that might ruin the experience.
