What's /vr/'s opinion on the original Super Mario Bros.?

it has a pretty unique difficulty balance imo, hard gameover no continues but avoids feeling particularly punishing.

great game but overrated for obvious reasons. i barely revisit it ever since the sequels started to come out.

Blown out of the water by SMB3.

Still fun, though a few levels are just stupid difficult for no reason.

Really fun and the first game I had for the nes like most people of the time. I still enjoy playing through it from time to time.

If you compared most early period NES/FC platformers to SMB it's like night and day. the majority of them are awful and have aged like old milk.

what other platformers feel like playing Mario? like the speed and momentum, maybe a run button, etc.
I know there is Sonic, but usually it's games like Dynamite Headdy or Ristar where it's just slow linear movement. I haven't actually played much though

The fact that you have to restart your game to get into Duck Hunt makes this unplayable. It's nothing but artificial difficulty. You should be able to pause, move over to Duck Hunt for a while as a mental health break (they didn't know how important those were back then obviously), and then resume your SMB game. Also, huge ludonarrative dissonance in the way the bricks are

Very fun game, I run through it still every once in a while. Usually quick games with warps. Super Mario Bros. 35 is fun too if you haven't tried it (35 player competitive Super Mario Bros.).

This QoL improvement, removing the pointless lives system, and tightening up the controls would almost bring it up to the standards of a modern game. Well maybe a modern indie

The only fun part of play Super Mario Bros. as a kid was laughing at your friends or parents dying on the first few levels. The misery of falling in holes or getting stomped by mushroom people was not what I would call a good time. Having said that, decades later I really miss simple game design like this. I wish we had more games that were tightly designed and challenging. I don't feel like Super Mario Bros. is a perfect game, but I feel like a perfect game could be made based on the ideas in Super Mario Bros. SMB3 is not that perfect game. SMB3 is a game with a ton of creative ideas and content. It's great for it's own reasons, but a game like New Super Luigi U is much closer to the original game in design.

My dad was actually really good at Super Mario Bros. He got obsessed with it for a while. One of the few games he liked playing. SMB, GI Joe Atlantis Factor, and Road Rash 2. That's about all he ever played a bunch.

>ludonarrative dissonance
The real ludonarrative dissonance is small Mario. He needs a mushroom to power up, but Super Mario appears to be his normal size. His default size, presumably for his entire life before coming to the Mushroom Kingdom and discovering magical power-ups was freakish manlet.
Actually in Donkey Kong he's the same height as an oil drum. He's not even 3 feet tall!

It pushed the limits of what a cartridge with no hardware enhancements could do on the NES. The reason you can't go backwards is because it has no extra RAM for more nametables. With the obstacle course nature of the level design you usually have no reason to go backwards.

I don't completely understand the concept of frames when it comes to video games.

This and duck hunt were the first games I ever played. I was 4. I was fascinated by it, but I wouldn't say I had a smile on my face the entire time. That didn't happen til Mario 3. But there must've been something to it because it got me interested in playing other games. Compared to other games released around this time, it seems like this one was one of the first if not the first to nail down how a good platformer should feel. Miyamoto seems like he put a lot of consideration into it, and he was effective. It's cool have been around for that.

I think Nintendo has always done a good job at prioritizing what tickles the part of the brain that handles play. I've never been a Nintendo kid because I wanted my games more edgy, but I can't deny this is always something Nintendo has done well except for a few cases.

I'm not going to get into what constitutes an objectively good game, and maybe we'll never know. But I'd say for its time it definitely set a standard. For me at least. If it seemed less fun than Mario, then I didn't fuck with it.

A bit too long for how little variety it offers, but thankfully the existence of warp zones alleviates that

Its devilishly simple design is the key to its addictive gameplay. The player is always tempted to try again to see if the course can be run more elegantly.
