Anyone else feel like Thief 2 is worse than Thief Gold? I used to think the two were roughly equal but I'm replaying 2 and it's coming off a lot worse than I remember.
Lotta repetitive, symmetrical, maps that are boring like S&R, too much backtracking in some maps, even the story feels worse. NPCs are way too obvious with their exposition.

most do seem to agree that 1 is better. i think 2 is more consistently good. people say 1 had better peaks as far as missions go but none really stood out to me, and due to the slightly worse graphics they all came off as more same-y than 2s missions. maybe atmosphere was a bit better in 1 but i really couldve done without most of the mystical/undead shit, which seemed to be kept to minimum in 2. hope 3 is better than they say.

Thief has that perfectly creepy, uncanny atmosphere, Thief 2 is the best in terms of pure gameplay. I liked T2 a lot more than TG initially due to the latter's major mission lows outweighing its highs, but now that I've had time to acquaint myself with the games better they're almost equal in my books. I'm even starting to prefer TG FMs more than T2 ones lately.

Thief 2 is way better imo. The first game is mostly gimmick levels that don't hold up on as well on replays, whereas Thief 2 is good old fashioned breaking and entering missions for most of the game.

"Worse"? Hell no. But I find the aesthetics of 1 more pleasing personally than 2.
The gameplay definitely advanced in the sequel though.

And fuck "Gold", It's Thief: The Dark Project for me.

Same here. I'm a T2 kinda guy, but the aesthetics and atmosphere are something else.
I definetly think that T2 could have worked if they had more time to polish the visuals, the art deco/victorian era could work just as well but it felt rushed.

2 is better but I like the pagan atmosphere in 1 more than the dumb ass robots in 2.

I don’t like the enemies in T1, I prefer the methodical exploration approach to the speedrunner one

TG was expanded upon from the original with what they'd learnt from Thief 2's development, so it added a lot of content and context to the game that was previously lacking.

They're both solid games in my opinion, however I did enjoy the story for Thief 2 more than the first one, as it had more elements of actual infiltration than parts of the first one did. They both hold up as exceptionally good games. Thief 3 was a dissappointment in terms of story and pacing, where as the first two got everything right.

The newest one wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fantastic either.

hmm, I'd say 2 has the big "peaks" like Life of the Party and missions like that, which are so detailed compared to Thief 1 missions. But Thief 1 has burricks! I love those fuckers.

>> No.9439269

Don't know why people hate on the atmosphere in Thief 2. Not everything has to be supernatural.

No because fuck zombies, fuck the Thieves' Guild and fuck Brother Murus.

>can't mantle
>can't jump
>can't use rope arrows on anything but specific spots
>can't open or close doors, steal or do literally anything without an animation interrupting you
>quest markers
>linear gameplay
>cinematic gameplay
>no hammerites
>no mechanists
>no pagans
>dogshit story
>horribly generic artstyle
Shall I keep going?

I actually like Thief 2's grounded setting a lot more because when there's finally something supernatural it really gets you. Like the haunt crypt in Eavesdropping, most people I've seen start with Thief 2 never expect what's down there.

Aw fuck is 1 really better? I got really sick of 1 by the end of the game, half the game felt unnecessary like you were just doing the same shit but in a different arrangement of cubes. I was hoping 2 would improve upon the formula but I still haven't given it a go since I got so annoyed with the 1st game.

I always got the vibe that Garret in T1 feels more like a D&D thief class. You have to plumber tombs and stuff, and I personally prefer that.

T2's gameplay is obviously more polished, but I somehow got bored everytime I started a playthrough and had to do it in small segments with sometimes week long breaks inbetween. This was never the case with T1 for me.

same but i pushed through anyway aside from skipping the return to cathedral, fuck that horseshit. 2 was pretty good from start to finish except for the last level, give it a chance.

that would be a nice idea for FM authors. idk how easy would it be to script the guards to go back to their normal routines or to sound the alarms after you have dumped them elsewhere.

>>9442387
I guess I read something about that but he has changed it. Maybe for March or something

Have you guys played Legacy of Knoss? The last FM by Nicked? I love my bri'ish man Nicked but this mission doesn't feel like him at all. You know how his missions all have a quirk that just works? This one is more standard version than usual
