Not saying it wasn't good for the time, specification-wise, but not only does it seem to lack good, exclusive games, it almost entirely lacks other software as well. What's even more baffling is that Sharp released a host of very expensive follow ups and upgrades, including 68030 models, scanners, video interface devices, and so on. Almost all first party because nobody made any software (other than games) apparently.

What gives? Seems like it was pretty good for a Japanese 32 bit computer, why didn't the Japanese make non-game software for it? I do know of a BARE handful of productivity applications and compilers and stuff but almost all seemed to be first party.

It becomes clear that this is, despite the GREAT ports of arcade games (the architecture was similar to the top arcade boards at the time mostly) one of those systems which doesn't make sense to try to collect even in the most extreme cases of autism meets otaku. Yes, it looks cool. Yes it has the best arcade ports. No, there's no reason to actually buy one. If somebody here actually collects this system, I'd like to seriously ask, why? Not in a rude way or anything, but what makes it worth the pain in the ass that X68000 collecting is?

I don't think a soul out there has put out there that it's some legendary mega system and not just a platform with a lot of good games. The whole argument over importance and exclusivity is so pretentious. I bet you that if you spend time playing x68000 games either on or off the consoles you'll experience, quantitatively more spontaneous smiles per hour than spending time talking about it on here will bring you.

I have played some of the games in emulation but it's just that I can't really find anything that doesn't have a MAME rom dump which is better or at least, exactly the same.

You sound butthurt for some reason too. Why? Can you name a couple games which I can't play on another system, or some software, anything worthwhile? I grew tired of emulating it because there's nothing really going on there.

Yes. Yes it is.

Indeed

It was one of the many non PC/Mac alternatives that existed back then, and a very good one. Like these other systems all reddit talks about is games so that's all you hear about. Even worse as this was japan exclusive.

The only reason for someone like you to want to "collect" them is for likes and upvotes. But you're a poorfag and an EOP, so SOL. I still have my original, and my FM Towns, and Amigas, and a buttload of others. lmao at poorfag bandwagoners.

the street fighter ports are overrated. CE has sound issues, and new challengers is so poorly optimized that it runs like shit on a base x68000 (no reason when the snes can handle a decent port with turbo speed no less)

I'd would like one to play those arcade ports and it seems like the closest thing without using emulation. You used to be able to get one under $200 but now its way too hard to find so I'll just play the conversions on the ps1 and saturn.
I think pc98 got more software because it had lots of expansion slots and a hard drive was pretty standard, even nintendo used it to make games. The most well known games are the gradius remake of an msx game and castlevania.

There's not a lot of compelling reasons to collect one now. However, when the system was new there were many.

1. Play games on the most powerful home hardware available.
2. Use other software to do all of the typical productivity tasks a PC can do.
3. Connect to BBS and chat online. Send and receive emails. Later, connect to the early world wide web.
4. Program your own software, including video games if you have the drive to do it.
5. Play eroge (most important reason to own one).

They are not irrelevant since a lot of them are basically identical to the arcade original but with preset credits by default, Bosconian on X68 was an upgrade to the original too.
Geograph Seal is an impressive showcase of 3D graphics on a machine that certainly wasn't made for it, pretty decent game too.

All the exclusives I've seen are solid. Are there, perhaps, so many out there that some tard is missing the gems in all the clutter?
"some other system" might (often) mean a very expensive PCB. On a board where kiddos constantly claim that shit like the Saturn has """arcade perfect""" ports said kiddos should be worshiping the ground the x68k walks on.
Problem is they're more interested in throwing tantrums because they got called out for saying something stupid than talking about games.
