There are new and better handhelds every year so it's useless trying to keep up.
Just buy whatever plays 4th gen games and backwards and have fun.
Emulating 6th gen games poorly on a handheld sounds like hell to me.

These are not all of my handhelds, but these are the handhelds that I consider to be in active use. I also have an RG350M, several DS Lites and one DS phat, a couple of n3DS XL's (one black, one Samus), a Game Boy Pocket, another GBA SP (the one in the picture is an AGS-101 that was reshelled, my other is just an AGS-001 black), both versions of the Vita, a PSP 2000 (silver), a Game Gear and a Virtual Boy. I also have a Miyoo Mini on the way and my girlfriend is getting me an RG505 (gray) for Christmas.

I just got the RG353M today and I am working on setting up the games card right now, going to be using JelOS which I already have installed and running. I think the Miyoo Mini is going to end up being my pocket handheld that's just always with me, I'm really looking forward to getting it.

Recently got a used switch lite for under 100 bucks, I'm only using it for a few sega classics and other old game re-releases. Considered modding it but I would probably still use my 3DS for emus instead.

>>9427315
There's too many of these emuhands and I don't have the time to figure out if any is really worth owning. I also don't trust these shits to be anything that will hold up for more than a year or two. I expect they will be cheap POS that break and are useless once they do. On a similar note, I've already been burned by GPD handhelds and so I tend to assume that anything else I get will be the same. Being able to play higher-end PC games on a handheld felt less like a workable achievement and more like a proof of concept that I overpaid for.

Lites are hardmod only. I am the furthest thing from skilled with soldering, but I can probably make it work. I won't lie though, my low dex scores and bad luck rolls play a good part into why I'm not more gung-ho about it. Some people care a lot about emulating late 90s/early 2000s home consoles on a portable, but personally that era doesn't interest me much, so I don't think I'd get anything out of the mod that I can't already do with a 3DS or with a vita.

I was trying to be as delicate as possible, but yeah, the thing is ugly as FUCK in its current color options. It's not like the design in general is super pleasing to begin with, but it at least looked passable to me in this pre-production black unit they showed off a while back.

https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=ECqi11cNtvo

Honestly I think there's like a 50% chance I'll end up selling the thing and grabbing the 353M in it's place since that ended up being quite a bit lighter than I was expecting. What color did you get? I normally don't care for purple and blue as I generally just find blue boring, and purple is usually "le ebin nintendo burble xDDD", but these two metallic shades in particular are really nice looking.

With these RG351/RG353 devices you really want to use some custom firmware. Either JelOS or ArkOS. JelOS is more user friendly and requires less fucking with to get going. ArkOS is more for people who want to customize all of the settings. They're very similar though, and the developers collaborate.

Basically, take the SD cards that come with the device out of it, and set them aside. Have a small SD card (32gb~) around and burn either JelOS or ArkOS to it. Then put that in the TF1 slot. Have a larger card around and place it into TF2 (make sure it is formatted as exFat, which it probably is), this will be your games card. When you start up the system it should populate a bunch of folders on your TF2 card where you can put your games and bios files.

Bilinear interpolation sucks because it adds blur
Extreme resolutions like 300K on a 30 inch screen would result in a perfect upscale without any of the jaggies you see from typical NN or Integer scaling at common resolutions like 1080p/4K while retaining a crisp smooth look.

This is my theory anyways.
Test this with a 300PPI phone for example. Download a game like Taxman's Sonic 1 or 2 remaster and hold your phone in one hand and stretch it as far as you can and look at the attract screen. You will barely be able see the jaggies and you'll see a sharp but quite smooth picture from that distance. But as soon as you hold it with both hands in a normal playing distance you'll immediately notice the jaggies/aliasing artifacts.

This is why I think pixel density in the realms of 12000 to 30000PPI would result in a perfect uspcale to where you can no longer see aliasing artifacts at any distance no matter the screen size(although of course this requires bigger resolutions the bigger the screen is).

How in the GOD. DAMN. HELL do you prevent your handheld from getting ANY scratches? Why didn't handheld manufacturers back in the olden times (i.e. like 2000 fucking 4) make it standard for their devices to have a built-in screen cover or some shit that you could replace for cheap? The original GBA had one that you could directly order from Nintendo for FOUR DOLLARS and no other console that came after followed this idea.

It genuinely saddens me when I see DS Lite or PSP from back in the day that's been weathered and absolutely wrecked to shit with the passage of time. The last time I saw a Sony or Nintendo handheld that had 0 scratches on it was in 2016 and now that specific 3ds has a scratch on the top screen. Is there anyone that's been following a specific set of rules with handling their handhelds over the years and has successfully avoided scratching their screen after all these years with their console? I'd love to know what you guys do :-)

Either the RP3+ or RG505 might be a good fit for you if you're looking for something that can emulate a wide range of systems. They're similar in size to a Switch Lite. You could also try actually modding some old Game Boys if you're specifically interested in GB/GBC/GBA, it's not as hard as it once was. Most still require some soldering, but usually just a couple of wires. There was recently some drop-in GBA screens that showed up, but whether or not you'd need to solder depended on which specific model of the original GBA that you had.

RG505 or RP3+, take your pick. It depends on what you want to emulate. If you want perfect PSP I'd lean towards RG505 because of 2x OLED panel. The RP3+ does have a higher res "worse" IPS panel, and shit D-Pad and analog sticks, but the stacked shoulder buttons might be preferable.

If a 5-inch screen is too small for you while a 7 inch is too big, then that pretty much leaves you with the 6 inch screen on the Odin Lite. Excellent device all around if you don't mind the bigger size and weight. I'll add from my personal experience that it gave me really bad hand cramps and the positioning of the d-pad didn't jive with me at all.

There's also the 5.5 inch screen on the Powkiddy X28 that is supposed to have the same chip as the RP3+ and 505. I don't think that's going to release until earlier next year tho so as to avoid stepping on Anbernic's toes as they launch the 505 (same company or parent company iirc). Is the Odin Lite a good enough as far as "mid range" handhelds go? My last experience with one of these was a Powkiddy X18 or something, and it was beyond terrible. The controls felt sub Madcatz tier and games barely ran well on it.
Or am I better up saving up for a Windows handheld like the Ayaneo Air? It looks comfortable to hold compared to the Abernic Win600 and I've never used an OLED screen before, so I want to see how that would do for games like DOOM 3, Manhunt or the older RE games.

People seem to like the Odin Lite, way better build quality and performance than an Powkiddy X18. I think it's still kinda hard to get one though.

order a tempered glass protector. wish they sold these back when the psp originally came out, so my psp wouldn't look like shit after just touching it. don't waste your money on shitty plastic film, get the tempered glass ones. and buy spares, for when you drop it. haven't had anything scratch my phone's protector, but when I dropped my phone and it simply chipped the protector.

real question is how do you get all those scratches out, now that they're already there.

that said, when you put a protector on, be mindful of smoothing out large bubbles, as it goes on and thoroughly rub out all the small remaining bubbles after.

I just can't BELIEVE how damn smooth every single game is, I swear I never emulated like that.
I have a mister already ordered but in the meantime this one is going to satisfy plenty in the meantime.
Too bad there's still a lot of broken janky shit and the updates aren't that often, I just had pokemon corrupt the save because I loaded the savestate from the wrong game and the UI didn't stop me at all from doing so, thankfully I just lost 10 minutes because pokemon has that double save data going onbut damn, also I got to constantly delete savestates that pile up and be careful to not accidentally delete the wrong game's... why couldn't they separate saves by game??

games feel like they are playing at 120mh even tough it's clearly whatever FPS the originally ran at, it's just that the emulation is so free of slowdowns (again, unless the original console slowed down) and stable it looks smooth, GBA audio never crackles and pixels look all the right size.
I don't see how I can go back to normal emulation after this, definitely not for GBA, but SNES and genesis run amazing too

Depends on what you want to play. I'm getting it because of the Saturn games that run like shit on the RP2+/RP3 as well as the ability to turn off frameskip for Dreamcast. The ability to not have to play any of the PSP stuff at 1x resolution anymore + 2x and up with geometry correction in Duckstation is also nice. I have a feeling I'll be able to play God Hand and Shinobi PS2 at fullspeed too since they're well over half speed on RP2+/3, which are the main two PS2 games I want to play.

Here I have a projected battery life of 8 hours 21 minutes while emulating Mega Bomberman in Retroarch with airplane mode on, 30% brightness and volume, and a power save option on. That's actually quite a bit better than I was expecting, it's been a long ass time since I last emulated Megadrive on my deck because I prefer my RP3 for that, so maybe some software updates actually improved the battery life. Funnily enough, just idling on the main menu of the Deck gives me like an hour less battery life.

It IS too big for a handheld, but it's also the most ergonomic handheld that's ever been made. The weight is 669g iirc, so like 3 RP3s kek. I find it's totally fine while sitting in a chair, but it causes my hands to numb up (not cramp up) if I play it for a few hours in bed where I'm lying on my back and holding the device up in my field of vision. I played it for 5+ hours straight several weekends in a row in this position when I first got it, so it's doable, but trying to use the touchpads and rear buttons in this position for something like an FPS ended up fucking with my rests so I quit doing that.

I think everyone should have a Deck honestly, but it doesn't replace a small chinkheld for emulation either. I don't have tablet or anything, but I liken it to the difference between using your tablet at home vs using your phone at home.

God, Thanks for the photo. I just realized I am a fucking retard.

A massive issue I have with these devices and consoles is when the right analog is so close to the buttons diamond that it gets in the way. With Ps Vita I would end accidentally moving it, but with the gamesir it was so bad that I could not rest the thumb on Y-B easily and I had started using B-A to play.

And by looking at your photo, I realised that I HAD LEFT THE XBOX STYLE ANALOG COVERS ON and they make the stick so wide that I can't reach the button. After removing them, while not perfect due to the small space between buttons and stick, it's a lot better for playing something like Super mario World

They were in the small bag. The first day it arrived I began trying it with Retroarch, had a blast with Snes, GBA, Wonderswan, etc. I tried just one on the left stick, kept playing, and when I got home I placed the second grip cover on the right stick to try Xcloud Gamepass and ZDoom.

Then the weekend happened, the gamesir went back into its pouch until monday, and that's when I realised that the stick was getting in the way of the thumb.

It was not until that photo that I noticed the real analog sticks are smaller and more or less the size of a switch one. With the grip on, the diameter goes from 12 to 17mm.

I don't like Brandon's reviews very much but he has a point, the handheld market has got really oversaturated in the last 2 years and I don't feel like buying one if it's gonna become obsolete in a few months and they release an incremental upgrade later. Yes you can buy an upgrade kit for RP3+ but that's not for everyone.

But I guess most people are happy with having just 1-2 devices and not collecting too many like these guys. I'm still satisfied with my RG351MP for stuff up top PS1.

>> No.9443224

>>9442820
Yeah I feel bad for the people who bought the RP3 and got fucked only 2 months later but I can't deny the 3+ is great value and it's exactly what I'm looking for. So as someone who has never had a Retroid before, it's great for me. People also need to stop getting suckered into the FOMO and just buy the device that best suits their needs at the moment and then upgrade a year or two later if they want to. Chink market is always going to be oversaturated with small incremental upgrades and you can't be a consoomer and want them all.

>> No.9443245

I would not buy a new anbernic/retroid simply because they are not perfect at what they are aiming at (GC/PS2), so I feel like I'd waste my money for a small incremental change. It is better to wait until the console that can emulate these systems is released, than buy a new console every 4 months just for such a small gain.

Returning to say "Fuck yeah" on the V90 PowKiddy recommendation. I got one for $40 on Amazon 2 days ago and it's here already. Came with a case and charging cable too. The 16GB included SD card is utter trash so the first thing I did was back it up and replace it. Then I threw all the upgraded stuff onto it and updated the firmware.

The problem is that I cannot possibly give this to a kid because turning off the power fucks the thing over and corrupts the SD card.

It came with a ton of games, frankly, whoever set this thing up at the factory had great taste. They even threw on SoTN, FFVII and FFVIII. Also had GBA, GBC and GB roms, about 100 each, handpicked, so this thing ships with a subjective top 100 of each of those platforms. No NES or SNES, but genesis is here. I threw on Amstrad and Coleco roms to bolster it.

I have to say, this thing is tight as fuck for $40. If they can ever fix the power button issue, I'd be able to buy these, replace the sd card with some old one I have laying around, and hand them off to the kids in my family, ready to go, in a state which any kid can use it.

Really happy with this thing, even though I can't give it to the senpai yet. It's astonishingly good for such a cheap piece of shit.

Also, avoid the $10 ones on Amazon as a lot of the reviews there call BS on that listing. Anyone here actually get the $10 one and recieve it?

Why not go for one of those chink 'X Console' boxes on AliExpress? Or just build or buy a 'mini PC'. That sounds about what you probably want aka a higher mid tier PC imo.

If you really want to play 3DS games and emulate SNES games almost flawless, get the New 3DS.
Now if you just want to play DS games, GBA and some SNES games get a DSi XL or a DS lite.
3DS will fuck up the DS games scaling.
DSi is preferably because it has a better screen.

Unfortunately, no. But turning it off doesn't ABSOLUTELY destroy the SD, it just does a full disk check on reboot, and that takes time and looks scary to a kids, i'd wager (Mom, my gameboy has a black screen and says some weird stuff and none of the buttons work!)

If you keep the sd card it came with in there, it's doomed. If you put in a relatively quality card and instruct the kids as to exactly what happens and when and how, like, a 15 minute class, you could probably get them to understand. It's the only gotcha. Oh, and if you dump entire romsets on it, listing those dirs can take a looong time. Try to keep it under 500 games.

I jailbroke my Nintendo 3DS XL, and honestly, the New 3DS XL is the GOAT time when it comes to jailbreaking 3DS's.

Reason being is that you're going to have a way better time playing N64, etc on the New 3DS, and have a ton more options to choose from in terms of handling SNES emulation.

You 'can' emulate SNES + Genesis, etc on the regular Nintendo 3DS, but they're on separate emulators and a bit jenky. It's 100x easier with Retroarch on the New 3DS XL.

t. was debating FOREVER to get a New 3DS XL to jailbreak it but gave up, and decided to just buy Anbernic devices to play up to PS1 stuff, and emulates everything else from N64 up on a phone with controller.

Not just because the analog placement is fucking terrible like usual (would it literally kill them to move the sticks up and towards the screen a little bit, fuck), not just because the sticks are practically unusable in-tandem with the shoulder buttons both because they stuck with the inline meme AND because the device is even taller than the 552 which already had this problem, but also because the analogs operate like a fucking d-pad. Info on the RG35XX (aka Anbernic Mini)
From the name everybody has certain expectation of them.
here is the list of things that I can share.
like a lot of other budget with less open chips, Anbernic is NOT allowed to share anything public , but with the help of Onion OS creator , we will be able to make some better OS. It can have emu station based front end, based on what onion os creator said.
the screen is 3.5inch , shoulder buttons are very noice and totally playable.
the price is of course very noice.
it is not as powerful as the 351 series, but it is a quad core ARM with dedicated GPU, so it is a LOT more powerful than the 3x0 series. ( so a LOT better than jz4770.)
I have played with the stock fw, it is simple and very useable, I kind of wish for a bit more features, but at the current state, I got the filter (scanline and stuff) and instant save , so i am all goood.
and
ABOVE ALL, there will be no hungry sale thing with anbernic, it is going to be listed and shipped in less than 10days (provided , there will be no more lock down)

cheers

I just got my RP3+ and the L2/R2 buttons are way easier to click down than on my RP3 what the fuck. Either this is just down to chinese assembly lottery, or jewtubers are shit for missing this. Either way, first impressions are good and I like the slightly textured plastic on the transparent blue. >tfw just finished packing up my yellow RP3 to ship out to some ebay cunt tomorrow
Feels kinda wrong bros, but I can't let myself become one of those weird handheld hoarders now that I have my RP3+. I didn't care at all when I packed up my Odin, but I'm already feeling sad that I'll never see that brilliant shade of orange(yellow) in person ever again.

>>9453613
Well if anyone cares, here are my thots so far:
>thought the different plastic texture on the transparent blue was neat when I first touched and held the device, but now after playing on it for a few hours, I unironically thinks it's a fucking gamechanger. I have no idea why, it's just a stupid plastic finish that isn't even that overt, but I swear to god it makes playing the device just feel so much better.
>was kinda unsure about the new face buttons at first but now I absolutely love them. mashing in God Hand feels so fugging good. In general I think I actually prefer them to the dome buttons in the RP3 (which I already thought were great), but in some cases like Crazy Taxi 2 I prefer the dome buttons
>speaking of God Hand, this thing is way better at PS2 than I was expecting. Got God Hand, Shinobi PS2, and Persona 3 The Answer running at fullspeed in the NA versions with barely any tweaking. Although to be fair, I barely played any P3, so maybe it all goes to shit in battle. I basically just booted it up and ran to the place with transparent pillars that cratered the framerate on the original RP3, so it at least passes that test.
>Running God Hand at 1.5x resolution and might even be able to run it at 1.75x even without dips, but it'll probably be close. At 2x it started to have dips. Shinobi at 2x resolution and haven't tried any higher. P3 was fine in the little bit I tested even to 3x resolution, didn't try past that and I really doubt that would hold up in a battle.
Had a little more I wanted to say, but ran into the text limit so w/e. tl;dr thing is fugging awesome so far.
