I beat this game when I was going through a particularly rough patch in middle school, and it was really the only thing making me happy for a month or two. Now that I'm older and have replayed it a few times since, I still feel just as much emotion as I did reaching that finish line for the first time. Maybe more, since I'm not a kid anymore and never will be again.

There's a few endings that get to me, though I don't think most of them were meant to be sad.

SMB2 is one of them. The melancholy music playing alongside the ghostly outlines of the cast, combined with Mario waking up briefly, looking around, then dozing back off, surely to forget the entire adventure by morning, certainly makes for a bittersweet ending.

And I owe a huge part of it to AVGN's review of the game in the Castlevania special he made in 2010.

Still, when I finally got to play the game, it was such a special experience for me. It is my favorite Classicvania by far, and it teleported me back into the 90's, everything in this game reminds me of the 90's. It was a very intense experience

i have no idea what youre talking about, i dont remember this at all. im talking about the end credits where it goes through photos of the interesting setpieces you visited before, different characters from the game hanging out, and it concludes with a group photo of the campus kids. the game was a bit messy but seeing all the setpieces one after another made me appreciate how creative it was and i understood that even though the game is clunky as hell in parts, it was really made with love.

>WHO was that unknown being OPA-OPA fought with, so closely RESEMBLED HIM in shape, and was equipped with THE SAME FUNCTIONAL WEAPON? It was in reality, OPA-OPA's other self.
>Due to THE EMOTIONAL STRESS brought about as a result of A WAR DURING HIS CHILDHOOD, he developed A DUAL PERSONALITY of virtue and vice, unknown even to himself. Only HIS FATHER was aware of this fact.
>Splitting into 2 separate beings, he became in addition to his role as the HERO, the enemy's MASTERMIND, thus because of the PATERNAL BOND existing between them, HIS FATHER had NO ALTERNATIVE but to assume the role of THEIR LEADER.
>HIS FATHER sensed that OPA-OPA's PERSONALITY OF VICE plotted to throw the "FANTASY ZONE" into DISORDER. Parasitized by NENONS, OPA-OPA amplified DARK IMPULSE. So, using A REVERSAL WARPGATE called "GESTALT GATE", HIS FATHER made him dive into HIS INNER WORLD and DESTROY THEM ALL.
>As a result of OPA-OPA's courageous VICTORY, the evil being that has dwelled in him are now DESTROYED. Deepy moved, OPA-OPA can no longer contain his TEARS which signify his return to righteousness as they fall. OPA-OPA hopes that war will never occur...AGAIN.

Yeah, the masterful thing about that ending is the music. The whole game's music has a lot of range, from bombastic gothic anthem Simon's Theme to somber, moody stuff like the caverns, to quirky, fiendish ballroom music, but all of it, either high tempo or low tempo, sounds pretty dark and oppresive, like you're not ever really at peace, you're still going through an evil eternal night. Then, you defeat Dracula, and the sun rises, and the ending music reflects that. For the first time in the whole game, bright and celestial music plays. Maybe the password screen comes close but that's more like an adequate music for being in a safe place, like a church (in this case, the save screen, which has a church aesthetic). The music is bright, but not quite peaceful, you're still on a quest, just in a safe place. The ending is pure victory of the sun over the night, pure bliss, and very emotional.
What a soundtrack.
