I distinctly remember a thing I one of the previous threads - a mod/mutator for Unreal Gold that allowed easy spawning and manipulation of items/NPCs even from other installed mods GMOD-style, the post wasaccompanied by imageofthe spawning menu.

2022ADO dude had me confused for some bit with compat levels. TXT file states "Limit-removing / Boom", so I was playing without a hitch until I hit a major roadblocks on E2M3 and E2M9, which forced me to switch from -cl2 to 9. ZDoom babies know nothing about such hustle.

What are you guys' favorite / comfy locations / level themes in these types of FPS games ? For me it's three fold :
1. Warehouse / industrial locales. Bonus for machinery that actually functions or mimics functioning like forklifts, cranes etc or level hazards that convincingly convey the sense of setting (see ; Half Life 1 and Residue Processing) .

2. "Seedy" parts of town. Strip clubs, porn stores, brothels, dive bars and flickering neon lights, great "excuse" to put some T&A into the game even in these times where all devs seem to be unnecessarily prude.

3. Homes, apartments, hotels. The more lived-in, the better. Even offices can be comfy if they have enough "clutter" , decoration and a natural feeling. Copy paste spartan rooms and corridors produce to me the opposite effect.

The expansions have their issues, but the new guns definitely feel incredible. If only FEAR didn't have that dorky 3 weapon limit and the new weapons and enemies were spread out to the main game as well...

Favorite looking is probably abstract hellish levels like in the later third of both Doom 1 and 2 since I'm a sucker for surrealism/psychedelic looking visuals.
Favorite ones if you only consider gameplay though is probably those that use corridors heavily (thinking of the FEAR pic you posted as well as the train shootout in E1M3 of Blood); in fact it basically carries FEAR IMO since even though it starts feeling bland and samey the levels at least consistently lends themselves to engaging firefights.

1. I always liked games where you were small or shrunk down and had to navigate the real world, like that part in DNF at the Duke Burger. Also Micromachine and Sim Ant come to mind.

2. Anything to do with aliens and ufos. I liked Ancient Aliens partially for this but I prefer something more akin to S1E1 of X-Files or some Twin Peaks shit. Overcast sky, maybe it's night. Stormy, rainy, spooky. The opening to the original Prey is pure kino.

Speaking of, there was a time when anon mentioned, with slight exaggeration, how unaccommodating and labyrinthian layouts of older games tended to be. If there is anyone willing to test their patience and navigational skills appropriately, you can try out 3rd Inferno-styled episode of 2022ADO with its staple gloomy fortresses and likewise imposing cliffs, huge lakes of blood (non-damaging) and fire included. Considering it's a mapset for original Doom, mapper provided enough cells and rockets so you wouldn't waste much time on monster clusters and HP bloated strays, expect to dish out few hours on completing it anyway.

There is nothing in the original game or most non-ZDoom mapsets that you can't get without a jumping. Unless mapset specifically tells you otherwise, assume that jumping and crouching is a cheat. Even vertical mouselook is an iffy thing.

The original game, and most levelsets aren't designed for jumping, and jumping can let you get to places before you should, or places you shouldn't.
When I'm playing just casually, I sometimes use jump/crouch in fighting, because that's fun to me, or occasionally for getting to cover I normally couldn't, while being mindful to not progress in ways I shouldn't (like in cases where I could jump to reach the exit right at the start because it's right there but just low enough to be cleared).
Mind, this kind of stuff can make some things easier, sometimes a lot easier than they are intended to be.

I think it's well worth it to you to play Doom without features like jumping and what not though, just to get a feel for how the base game is like, before moving on to mods and advanced features.

I'd like to distinct modern "Boomer shooters" - that just filled with fast paced movement and gory graphics - and classic "Doom". Kind of hard to top such a homerun such as the classic Doom games (especially accounting for the 28, soon 29 years and counting mod scene), thus I don't expect any later Doom to ever come close. That way, I can look at alternate interpretations of Doom as a game, and I'm fine with the games not being legendarily good. DOOM 3 is comfy, it looks great even today. For the past... I don't know how many years before falling asleep I have been developing an extended Doom universe in my head, imagining UAC marines in adventures and typical soldier life and talking to their platoon mates, combining UAC Marine stuff with Aliens Colonial Marines and my own experience/spoiler] and DOOM 3's base is fodder for my fantasies. I love how the DOOM 3 base is full of those video disks and emails detailing life on the base, from the mundane to the strange things that have been going on and I can just imagine working in the base when things are going well, being like a Security Marine doing patrols or a forklift operator in the UAC warehouse etc..

That said, keeping to the actual game, I think Doom 3 fails in the gunplay. It looks gorgeous but the feedback in gunplay is dog shit. The weapons look weird, oddly rounded-out toys and the enemies outside of the standard zombies don't even flinch when shot. When you shoot a Z-Sec guy with a shotgun almost point blank and he does not even flinch, that is just.. Bad.

A game like FEAR, you feel an insane power from the weapons even when you don't kill something, they react and have proper pain animations.

So, DOOM3, great atmosphere and it's good like a weird faux-horror fps, but the gunplay just lacks proper feedback and the guns are really ugly.

DOOM 3 has great atmosphere, it "livened up" the facility and the various emails, data disks and so on so forth made the UAC base feel like a lived-in location.

The atmosphere is eerie and spooky even before the demons start coming out.

But the gunplay and the environments feel incredibly static.

As someone else said, it's a Half Life game with a DOOM theme. But the fundamental of moving your character feels finicky, the gunplay I already mentioned (bad) .

Is there a way to change the order in which weapons come up when you press their button? I've been playing ashes and the 3 key brings up the double barrel first and then the much more useful pump action, I'd like to reverse that.

It's a matter of perspective. Strogg on Hard+ only show different pain textures, but them not getting staggered makes you realize how they're more in your face and thus more of a threat. Doom 3 enemies aren't as passive, though. They'll often react to big hits and have a "cooldown" mirroring Quake 1' somewhat.
For FEAR there's just tons of great feedback from the enemies and how they respond to the environment, like blasting a guy and having his blood fly on the ceiling after another ends up in a bloody broken window. It's so satisfying that you don't even notice the lame weapon textures and lack of shotgun muzzleflash.

Yeah it has the SSG, the other anon was mostly referring to the massive oversaturation of hell nobles and a few changes to specific enemies (like pain elementals having two mouths.) Some of the changes are just aesthetic or placement but the ones that actually change monsters make things pretty interesting, especially how claustrophobic most encounters are. The first secret level has 4 hell knights and 3 arachnotrons, yet it's probably one of the hardest levels in the game due to how you have to fight them and your resources regardless of pistol start.

The PS1 version is a *lot* easier to play, since you only control one terminator at a time while the rest autofire at anything in their LoS. You play it kinda like a "turn" based strategy hybrid, moving each unit into positions to cover choke points and prevent flanking.

The PC version is fucking bonkers but awesome. You control all of your terminators at the same time by clicking on their window and doing your inputs, involving a lot more micromanagement.

There were also other Space Hulk games that use similar formats, but the closest to a modernization is Deathwing, which has more of a Vermintide/L4D/B4B/etc feel to it

I'd say start with the PS1 version to figure out its clunky mechanics (especially melee combat) and then graduate up to the PC version if you want more. If you want something more open and less constricted Deathwing is pretty fun as well, albeit a bit barren in terms of multiplayer.

Few doom mapping questions. How would I implement breakable walls in slade? Been smashing my head looking for answers and I'm having trouble figuring it out. Additionally, how would I stop reflective floors from not rendering if you walk into a portal and look back? I told my friend to map around this limitation but he really wants it set up this way specifically and I can't figure out how to do it in a sane way. Oh, and finally, whats the max door opening speed when mapping with UDMF? Trying to make doors open in a single frame. Breakable walls in which way? You have to specify that. ZScript can do basic holes (see HD for that), but if you want them to have a certain "shape", like it were really a blown hole, you can do that with instant lowering walls, for example, or changing textures and blocking flags via script. But how would you activate the script? By shooting the wall or by something else? I remember making a breakable wall once via a projectile hit line and putting a barrel inside to get a proper explosion.

No idea about your second questions, I don't quite understand what you mean by "reflective floors".

Third, I think you can put anything as speed there, but I think it won't get faster after 512 or so, but you could do an instantly raising ceiling so the opening speed would be a single tic.
As always it's important to know exactly what you want to do and then work from the simpler tricks, for example the aforementioned instaraising/lowering floors and ceilings can already be done with vanilla tools.

I am going to put a rest to this shield shit right now.
Now I don't have an octagon shield, I DO have an oval shield, so some of this will still apply. Being a center gripped shield, and wielding it with your left hand like this, when you go on guard you're generally going to pull it tight to your body for stability. Unless you're doing some weird shield like blocking an attack that's going for your sides or down towards your leg.

I didn't really want to put the shield to the left of the screen as I felt keeping it centered would better show you're blocking your front. Now unless you have a center gripped shield and experience using it, or you can pull your dick up from your crotch up to your chest, I don't want to see this remark from you again.

Build is in a sweet spot where it's capable enough to represent lots of real world places, even if not realistically, well enough to trigger some suspension of disbelief. Yet abstract enough to support large complex levels like Doom does with large variety in environments, without pushing standards high enough that mappers have to create lots of unique assets. Want a mars base? Take moon textures and tint them red, done.

It's perfect for making "cool places" e.g. space bases, ancient egyptian tombs, mars colonies, giant sprawling city levels, etc. basically stuff that everyone's inner 12 year old would love.

I'll be redoing the torch soon too, mainly an aesthetic thing: I'm gonna turn them into bottles of liquid fire, more Castlevania, less GnG. But I think bottles of fire are cool
