Thread about the short lived vehicular combat aka twisted metal clone genre. My favorite game is vigilante 8 2nd offense before you ask

I really dug the original Vigilante 8. It had such a fun vibe

>> No.9424110

TM2 and Rogue Trip were the peak of the genre.

i had a demo of Vigilante 8 that i played a bunch. i dont even remember if i ever bought the full game. picrel was one of my favorites but the combat was secondary to the racing

My little brother order this out of one of those school book fair catalogs back in the day and we played the shit out of it on the family computer.

Hi-Octane anyone?
Massive fun in local multiplayer and I still got the sounds in my head after all those years.
Apparently abandonware nowadays.

Bullfrog had a good fun era back then.

While i liked Twisted Metal and Vigilante as a kid, i really can't get into them. Gave it a few tries but its really just boring, feels pointless. Even Twisted Metal 3 which was the best if i remember correctly.

2 player head-to-head was where this genre shined.

TM 1-3 had it down, but not so much the V8 series. The maps in V8 and 2nd Offense were a little too elaborate to have a fun 2 player experience.

With the unlockables and okay plot, V8 got single player story mode right.

>>>9426249

It didn't fit the aesthetic of the first two. It should've been called something else.

>> No.9427972

Depends what you mean by Vehicular combat.

If you want 'cars with guns' then it's Interstate 76 for me - Vigilante 8's predecessor.

Otherwise, I always enjoyed the first two Carmageddons - though the versions they did on consoles (particularly the N64) were dogshit, and you really do want the Splat Pack version.

>>9425339
WOW. forgot about this one. I used to play this one a lot, just looking at the gameplay video this one really brought me back. wipeout is a much better 'hover racer' than this one however, this one does not feel like your vehicle is attached loosely to the track, so it feels like your jumping off the ground and drifting a lot more than you would want to. still a fun game.

>> No.9428002

>>9426249
the cars flipped over incessantly. a lot of the soul wasnt there anymore, and the campaigns felt lame. it was like the brighter, more mainstream version of the earlier games which had a darker tone to them and a weightier feel to the cars

>> No.9428020

I know it barely qualifies as "retro" but do you guys not like Twisted Metal Black? Feel like it was at least as good as the original games.

I played it when I was 10 and my mind was utterly fucking blown by the edginess to the point that I became obsessed with that aesthetic. Honestly I didn’t really enjoy the car combat because I sucked at it— I was just enamored with the insane CGI clips and would turn on cheats to speed run the levels and watch the cutscenes.

Ok, checked them. N64 on the left, PS1 on the right.
N64 has texture smoothing and antialiasing. PS1 is crisper and has higher contrast.
Suprisingly, framerate is about the same.

PS1 version has better light flares with additive blending and it is easier to see distant objects.

9432538

Draw distance check. In N64 version distant objects fade out at a certain distance. On PS1 version they are intact and can be easily seen. On this example, pipes are barely seen on the N64.

Is it even playable on N64 emulators?

Last I heard they couldn't emulate the sky and other framebuffer effects (weapons floating towards the cars, weapons on the cars, etc).
