The GameGear is backwards compatible with the Master System, and Sega did release a 'Master Gear Converter' for the Game gear that allowed you to play SMS game carts on the system. NEC had the Turbo Express, which was just a portable TurboGrafx-16 / PCE. The Nomad only came out in North America. It was never released in any other region. It came out in 1995, and Sega had the Saturn on the market, and the Playstation 1 was brand new. The Nomad slipped by with little fanfare.

The Game Gear could compete with the GameBoy pretty easily on a graphical and audio level. In some ways, looking better than the GameBoy counterparts. Though, there were cases when the GameBoy game might have played smoother. the big selling point Sega had with the GameGear was the colour backlit screen. Which came at a cost of battery life. The price of the GameGear was usually $25-$50 more than the GameBoy at any given time. The OG GameBoy was the cheapest handheld to purchase, it had the best battery life. And was cheaper on batteries. Game cartridges for both systems were priced about the same. somewhere around $29.99 to $39.99 per game. Sometimes to make the GameGear look more enticing, Sega would also bundle the system with multiple games, to compensate for the higher price. It was generally Sonic 1/ Sonic 2, Columns and a Sports game, that were the pack-ins.

The Game Gear is based on the Master System and could do various screen resolutions. Sega released the Master System converter and the TV Tuner as well. Castle of Illusion on the Game Gear was a ROM dump of the Master System game, with what appears to be some colour pallet edits. The Game Gear version runs at the same screen resolution as the Master System game:

Here's Sonic the Hedgehog 1, which is screen cropped down to 160x144. The Game Gear version also has some graphical changes. Sonic's sprite looks different, there are road signs added to the maps, to tell the player about hazards to help with the screen crunch.

There isn't a single thing that the Sega Master System can do better than the Game Gear. They are basically equal, with the distinction that the Game Gear has a larger colour palette. Outside of adding an FM synth module (Japanese version). It is a portable SMS:

I never owned a Master System, but had one in my possession for almost a year. One of the games I had for it was Castle of Illusion in the box with the manuals. I completed the game on a Master System II with a Sega Genesis pad. I think it is one of the best platformers on the system. I don't think it's overall better than the Genesis game. But it is a really good 8bit platformer. I owned a Game Gear, with Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. I think I saw the box for Castle of Illusion at stores, and I swear I remember this commercial for it on TV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bla6XYW9AT8
I would have never guessed that it was the exact same game as the Master System version. Watching that comparison, it looks like the GameGear version looks like a ROM hack of the Master System game. They made some changes to the sprites, the GameGear actually seems to use a slightly enhanced pallete with the extra tones in a few spots. Image related shows different tiles used for the platforms. But it is the Master System game.

This is the game that made me beg my parents for an AC cable. Because, I would make it to that boss... and maybe 1 in every 5 tries, get passed it. Make it to the hang-glider stage. Die, and then watch my batteries die. I don't think the Hang Glider stages are hard, once you know how to use the hang glider. It controls like Mario's cape in SMW, but more limited. But, it was the trial and error that would drive me insane. Oddly, I replayed that stage on an emulator and had less issues. But would still be like a high chance of fucking up.

The GameGear was a pretty good competitor to the GameBoy, for its time. But overall, the GameBoy just kept on selling. By 1995, te original GameBoy was like $49.99-$75.99 somewhere between there. It was really cheap. The Super GameBoy helped it. Pokemon. Sega killed the GameGear in 1996. For a brief while between 1991 - 1994. I think the original GameBoy had a release of 520 games here in North America, while the GBC added a few hundred more. The Game Gear had about 220 or something. The system has a mix of downgraded Genesis/ Mega Drive ports, Master System ports, or Master System cross platform games and a few Game Gear originals. technically, it's the Master System hardware with an enhanced 4096 colour pallet. Devs were still finding ways to get the most out of Sega's 8-bit hardware.

>These are Game Gear games using Master System mode. Making a home brew Game gear game must be like making a Master System game,

I am pretty sure that making a GameGear game would be basically a SMS game with the screen cropped to 160x144. But the GameGear does have an advanced colour pallette over the SMS, with 4096 colours, compared to the SMS's 64 colour palette. I think a lot of GameGear games are just Master System games screen crunched to 160x144 with enhanced colour pallets. And run about the same as the Master System version. But, there are some games designed for the GameGear specification of 160x144, instead of the standard 256x192 SMS resolution, and could get a bit more resources out of the system. The Gamegear version of Streets of Rage is not the same game as the Master System version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZwuNDXLb28

The sprites and tiles were remade for the smaller resolution, and the GG version can display more than 2 enemies on screen at once. The GG version has two player via the link cable. The GG colour pallet makes it look closer to the Genesis game.

Same with SOR2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfHDClJQxGQ

I love how misleading the advertising is for the 8-bit Sonic 2 (most notably the GameGear version). It has this heavy emphasis on Tails, including Tails in the title screen. But the opening cinematic in the Game Gear game shows Tails get kidnapped. Tails is never playable in the game. Saving Tails requires you to find all the chaos emeralds.

Okay. None of those opinions changes the fact that the GBC is literally the GB but better, which was already a much better system than the Game Gear.

The GameGear doesn't have a lot of exclusives that you wouldn't also find on the Master System in the UK, or something. In North America, Sega killed the Master System in 1991, because the Genesis was hitting its stride. But the Game Gear replaced the Master System as SOA's 8bit machine. Which lead to a lot GG and Master System cross releases. Everytime I think the GameGear game that looks exclusive, I have to double check and see if it wasn't also ported to the Master System, or has a SMS port by TecToy.

Oddly I think Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on the GameGear is pretty good. Based on the TV show license, but the game plays like a belt scroller and fighting game hybrid. Fight off waves of putties, fight a boss 1vs 1. The GameGear game makes really good use of the GameGears extended colour pallet too. I really do prefer the look of GameGear games (cropped screen aside) over the SMS versions, due to the colour enhancement.

Defenders of Oasis is pretty good for an 8bit RPG:

Robocop vs Terminator is good IMO:

Aladdin on the Game Gear looks amazing, at the least. Great looking sprite animation and use of the GameGear colour palette:

Captain America and the Avengers:

Batman Returns (not bad 8-bit, GG version is also different from the SMS version):

Sailor Moon (Japanese only releases):

The system was a product of its time, and had a lot of licensed games. Just like the GameBoy.

game gear games manage to be more fun and impressive than gbc games despite coming out half a decade earlier.

Mine came in a few weeks ago. Crazy the amount of games you can run on the Deck

>here's a nice comparison of the handheld ports of Earthworm Jim:

Earthworm Jim was made as a GameGear and GameBoy game at the same time. The Master System version looks like the GameGear game running at 256 × 192 with a worse looking color pallet. The Master System mostly has primary colours, the GameGear version looks more like the Genesis/ MD game. The GameGear does have nice nice looking 8bit graphics due to its enhanced colours. It could still only display 31 colours max. There was a wider range to choose from.

Meant to post the SMS version, I think the game runs a bit slower because it is running at 256 × 192. Still not bad for an 8bit EWJ;

This >>9422335 mostly. I loved mine when I was in college, many long hours of waiting between classes and boring night jobs were made vastly better because of it. That said, as noted you pretty much always had to have it plugged in, I stopped using batteries very soon. And the screen is awful, especially by today's standards. I took this photo as a prop basically a year or two before I sold mine, but pretty much since the PSP came out and was hacked for Genesis games easy on the go I never used it. I wonder occasionally where my old Nomad now lays, in a box or display shelf. The one thing I know for sure, it's not getting used regularly.

GreenDog is another GameGear exclusive port of the genesis/ mega Drive game. There are GG2MS hacks like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lH5AfM-LKA

But this is one of those GameGear games designed to work within the 160x144 resolution. So, an actual GameGear game.

Eh, it was pretty average
I used it mostly as a portable master system, the problem is how much batteries it used

How did Nintendo beat Sega when the Master System and Game Gear had better graphics than the NES and GB?

>How did Nintendo beat Sega when the Master System and Game Gear had better graphics than the NES and GB?

Nintendo had a pretty good monopoly on third party devs with the NES era. The Master System also came out a few years after the Japanese Famicom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhO6FmeWq88

The Master System is better in some ways, but the NES could still output at a slightly higher resolution, and could do some things better. Games used 4 colour tiles and sprites. The Master System uses colours per layer. The GameGear can output nicer looking colour overall:

I will tell you one of my biggest complaints with the GameGear was the lack of Konami, and Capcom was literally: USGold making Capcom licensed games. Konami could have dropped a Turtles game, or Animaniacs.... The GameBoy still had a lot of third party support. Nintendo tried to reignite interest in the GameBoy with the SuperGameBoy, and the Play it Loud series, as well as the Pocket. Pokemon really was a selling point. Helped sell a lot of GBC's.
