It's so easy to plug and play almost any game, minimum menu shenanigans and loading times, almost every game seems to have a super speed dash button and 500% speed text. I wonder what gives but having a blast emulating it

Any other game recs that don't have better games on SNES?

Yeah, I don't.
>more railroaded
>way less exploitable with glitches
>missing kino original Game Boy sprites and aesthetics in favor of a more bland version of Ruby/Sapphire's presentation
>still has all the engine and gameplay flaws introduced by Ruby/Sapphire
>can't be played with Pokemon Stadium and the multitude of benefits that introduces inclduing 4x speedup
I'd happily rather replay the Game Boy originals.

If I had stopped at 2nd then I would have missed the best generation IMO. In fact, I still marvel at how much gold/silver felt like a tacked on extra and not a full-featured game, and at how people manage to think that being able to steamroll the shitty theme park version of kanto somehow improves on gold/silver being a total shit region overflowing with useless gimmick pokemon. The only part I like of 2nd gen is the soundtrack and the day/night cycle, and some nostalgia I have for the graphics and environments. Also, they fixed the horrible type balance. Otherwise I'd rather play 3rd gen, much better gameplay and much better region/new pokemon, I don't even mind the water trumpet.

4th gen was both the best and worst thing for me. Best in that I enjoyed and put a lot of hours into it, and worst in that I wasted a huge chunk of my life on it. I can't touch pokemon anymore, too much time put into GBA/DS games. I played one crystal romhack recently that let you free roam the entire game. That was my one last dose, and I'm not touching pokemon ever again. I also don't care enough to post any more about it.

Not retro, but wait until you find out about Pokémon MMO. Pretty insane that Nintendo hasn’t shut it down and also that they haven’t just done it themselves long enough ago that it should be retro.

Much easier than SMK and doesn't have the charm. SMK has the most memorable music and some of the cutest sprites ever

Also third gen was the last to run consistently at 60fps. I remember going from Emerald to Diamond and noticing that all the screen transitions and fast moving objects looked noticeably choppier (because they're 30fps). I didn't know what a framerate was at the time, but even then I could tell the difference.

>how
here's how I think about gold and silver:

>pokemon consist of three cool starters+evo lines, plus about 85 useless space fillers, gimmick evolutions/devolutions, with only a dozen or so actually worth a shit
>most hard to find/out of the way pokemon are useless gimmicks which cheapens the reward of finding them
>still not enough useful ghosts or dragons
>region consists of good music but nothing really memorable about locations or gym leaders
>ow the edge rival isn't interesting
>region still heavily relies on RBY pokemon making the new pokemon largely into a gimmicky expansion pack where nothing you hunt for is worth the time
>"comfy" additions like pokeradio are largely a worthless waste of time
>calling trainers is largely a worthless waste of time
>kanto is ridiculously underleveled and you faceroll through it like a 40-year old rock group on a shitty reunion tour, making GS kanto a cheap imitation of the original
>after all that crap you spend even more time grinding your team up to fight the one interesting boss in the entire game (you spend more time going through useless timewaster bullshit to get to something worthwhile and interesting in gen 2 pokemon than perhaps in any of the others that I've played, which given that includes the godawful gamecube games is saying a lot)
>apricots are a useless gimmick that only serves to make make the shitty pokemon no one actually wants into something slightly easier to catch
>days of the week don't contribute anything useful
>day/night is cool but real-time clock both drains battery and makes certain things annoying purely on scheduling

tl;dr they tried and experimented on a lot of things and most all of it just proved to be useless garbage. The only important changes were breeding, held items, and counterbalancing the game to nerf psychics. The music is good, the aesthetic is good, but 2nd gen overall feels like a patch. Necessary step but I won't go back.

Sonic Advance series is solid, people seem to enjoy the Castlevania games on there though I haven't played them yet, I personally have a soft spot for Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure and Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land (technically a remake of an NES game but, w/e). Gradius Galaxies is okay I guess.

Not GBA but Final Fantasy I & II on WonderSwan are the fastest versions and they have none of the bullshite added to the GBA+ versions, shame their English translation patches are slightly incomplete because the hackers got spooked stepping on FFOrigins' toes.

Amazing Mirror is much better in terms of ability usage. Nightmare in Dream Land was ruined mostly by all the frames they injected to take advantage of the GBA. Attacks are slow and clunky as a result. Amazing Mirror fixes the issue by cutting and speeding the animation to feel more instantaneous from your B-Button input. Aong with these and a few other amateur mistakes, the best version of Kirby's Adventure is the 3DS recreation.

>> No.9409193

Sure besides Amazing Mirror repeatedly requiring you to bring abilities to places to unlock a little secret or entire path, it was annoying especially when the Smash power seems to exist so you can break most of these hurdles stopping you from just fucking progressing

I actually just finished Amazing Mirror for the first time.
I enjoyed it and the new abilities are all fun but I disliked the open world gimmick. I felt like I spent about a third of the game backtracking and trying to figure out where I was supposed to go.
It's a fun game but to me it just felt derivative of Nightmare in Dream Land. I wouldn't consider it a must play even for a fan of the series.

I agree for the most part but including Fire Emblem 7 is a fucking joke. One of the longest, worst tutorials in any game and the only way to skip it is to have already beaten the game on that cart.
Easily one of the worst starts to any retro game.
