In terms of level design and gameplay mechanics they're on par; Yoshi might tip the balance towards SMW.
On the other hand, the save feature was implemented kind of thoughtlessly and the result is a game prone to let players get ahead with a cumulative deficit of skills, which makes the game increasingly more difficult to really enjoy the further they get.

So I think I like them both equally to pick up and play right now for example, but I do believe SMB3 is the stronger game overall.

I have to confess as a longtime SMB3 fan that I had never beat SMW until about a week ago. I actually found SMW to be much more enjoyable to play because it was way easier. I didn't like how Mario controlled at first, but once I got used to it, I really liked the game. I also liked the bosses way more than SMB3. SMB3 will always be dear to me because the NES was the first console I owned. SMW wins for me simply because if I had to choose which one to play to relax, it would have to be SMW.

>> No.9399984

>>9399835
They case can be made for either one. If one is 100% the other is 99.5%. They are both that good.

My favorite is SMW, purely because I feel the overall theme and world is more cohesive. I like the longer levels and all the secret exists and how the world unfolds. SMB3 has more varied levels but they are all much, much shorter.

>> No.9399994

>>9399835
I enjoy the movement of SMW much more than 3's, but 3's sheer variety in power ups, levels, and enemies wins out. Plus, the difficulty curve is better.

>> No.9399995

I liked 3 better. the movement felt more snappy.

immediately after I beat smb3 I started playing World and hated how long it took to change direction.

>I didn't like how Mario controlled at first, but once I got used to it
i feel like that's very common in platformers. in the end, both SMB3 and SMW controls great but SMW has regrabs which is great, but ordinary level design they're rarely needed

>> No.9400058

SMW feels too easy for the levels you get. By Vanilla Dome, you've probably mastered the movement and can steamroll through the game.

SMB3 is slightly harder. Both in term of the physics being closer to SMB1, and the level design being more compact with more obstacles and enemies in tighter areas for greater challenge. I just think SMB3 is the better game.

Fuck off, SMW levels are massive in comparison and so much more vertical and varied. SMB3 levels are mostly short and to the point, focusing on a single gimmick or theme. SMW levels have branching paths and secret exits in a lot of cases, whereas SMB3 rarely has those.

I said they're on par despite my personal preferences. Your take is that they aren't BECAUSE of yours.

Despite what can be ascertained by your mom's browser history, bigger doesn't necessarily means better. You get a very different flow with bigger levels in comparison to an equivalent amount of content distributed in smaller levels, and some players could (and do) prefer the latter. Not to mention there's not much of a difference in proportion of vertical level design across both games, and the "gimmicks" are present in both. Again, whether either element is a good or a bad thing is completely subjective.

Yeah it's kind of hard to go from one platformer you put a lot of time into to another. It just feels off or weird. I have an even worse time going from Mario to Donkey Kong Country. Though the newest iteration is easily my fave platformer of all time.
