I've been collecting old games for a while now and most of my buys have been at stores that sell old games or at flea markets. I've been to several yard sales and to a thrift store once and the only time I've found something more than half-decent is a game gear set for $15. (handheld, 9 games with cart protectors, game genie and a carrying case) I'm planning on going to a bunch of thrift stores tomorrow to see if I can find anything good but are these places still worth going to for finding old games?

(pic related since it's the thrift store that's most common around Michigan)

Everything is good except Goodwill.

The key is repetition. Develop a thrifting habit and repeat regularly.

When yard saleing, get up early and bring plenty of cash in small bills. Always haggle.

When it comes to yard salea get up early and bring p

Did something change with Goodwill, or am I just unlucky? A couple years ago I bought my NES and Genesis, along with half of the games I own for them, from Goodwill. But over the last year or so I've found pretty much shit-all there.

Maybe the Goodwills where you live are shit, but the ones around me are great. (Found a dmg gameboy, a grape gbc, a sega genesis model 2, 2 fat ps1, and a slim with lcd screen,a n64) Just to name a few.

I always find great deals at my Goodwill. All Goodwills don't operate the same. They are all divided in to regions and how they operate is decided on a regional level.

Some Goodwills are getting past the shopgoodwill shit, they have their own glass cases and conduct their own silent auctions with weekly live auctions. Some Goodwills are still far behind the times and don't participate in any of that stuff but are still in a large enough market to get good video games in regularly

But MOST Goodwills are shit that don't put the donated video games on the floor.

It would be great if I had one of these Computerworks in my city but the nearest one is 90 minutes away.

I'm actually going to a yard sale tomorrow to get some nes games.

Any tips on price range and haggling?

Never bought from a yard sale.

If you go early in the day, the only way to get great prices is if you make one lump offer on everything they have. You might be able to play the "I only have this much" card, just be sure you don't pull more than that out of your pocket (carry different amounts in different pockets). Later in the day, it's not unusual to be able to buy shit for half of what it's marked or even less if it's almost the end of the yard sale. A lot of times the sellers will make it clear they'll take less. At yard sales ALWAYS make eye contact with the seller, smile and say hello first thing. If you have a rapport they're much more likely to give you a good deal. A lot of sellers like collectors because they want their stuff to go to a good home and if you're just getting your collection started then all the better.

If there's a majority of games you need in the collection, offer to buy everything in one swoop, people will appreciate it. If they have 10 games and you need 7 of them, and they want 3 dollars per game, offer 15 or 20 dollars to buy all of it. Both parties will usually be pleased. The more you buy, the less you pay, so to speak.
