Disappointing retro sequels thread?

Of course Quake II is a great game, but who can say it is not a disappointment after the brilliant first?

Tech and art wise - a gem.

It wasn't bad, but I really wanted to see more HP Lovecraft grimdark. I didn't like the Strogg. Mechanical borg-knockoff zombies from space, snoresville.

Aside from the super shotgun/bfg, every gun felt piddly and weak. That chaingun sounded like a popcorn popper.

All in all, I think it did a lot of great things technology wise, and was a great canvas for mods/multiplayer. But the game itself felt limp and confused. At least Quake 1 took its identity crisis and just ran shamelessly with it.

Quake 2 wasn't even a sequel to Q1. They simply called it Quake 2 because they couldn't get the names they wanted for it.

>> No.934738

Save for the multiplayer, I felt both quakes were disappointing compared to other FPSs at the time. The SP modes in both didn't feel polished at all. Level designs were overly repetitive and bland. The enemies in 1 weren't even that memorable.

I pretty much stayed with the Build Engine games (Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood) at the time, because they honestly had infinitely superior SP modes than either Quake.

On the topic of disappointing retro sequels, I'd say that Doom 2 fits the bill. It's still a great game, and its modding community certainly shits on the originals by far, but it was effectively a standalone expansion with the official levels not nearly as memorable or as fun as the original Doom's levels.

Doom 2 Could've been better if it was paced faster. First 6 levels were a drag due to the slow introduction rate of the enemies. But I guess this happened because Doom 2 was the first doom to get retail box treatment, and id assumed most people only played the shareware doom beforehand (Which was probably true, since before ultimate doom, the only way to get the full Doom was to phone order it).

Quake 2 had the smoothest strafe jumping which was good and double jumps. But it lacked air control that made Quake 1 multiplayer amazing. Also the rockets in Q2 just don't push your the same way. Quakeworld movement is fucking glorious. Q2 stands for 2nd rate.

>>933856
No it really isn't, because it's fucking useless unlike Q1's shotgun which hits instantly and does in fact knock down health. It's strength is in positioning and harassing. Quake 1 actually has balance for weapon usage. The Q2 blaster is... for looking pretty and being fucking useless. Which it does quite well.

>>934887
That's a more apt comparison it's still weaker and slower, but then that's nearly the entirety of Q2 isn't it.
