It doesn't play like your standard beat'em ups, there's no standard grab and the enemy AI can be pretty stupid so you can abuse it to make them fall into a pit or keep spamming the dash atrack when there's only two on-screen enemies at opposing sides, but Golden Axe is so different from standard beat'em ups it's worth a playthrough. Fantastic Conan-like high fantasy setting too.

Check out Alien Storm for similar reasons, there's nothing in the genre that plays like it.

I enjoyed Alien Storm more. Instead of a jump attack you have a roll. You can do a roll into an attack that knocks enemies off their feet, or you can double tap a single direction to dash and attack and can stun an enemy and run past them. Then you can dash, do the roll and jump in the air and press attack to jump over an enemy and attack them as you vault over them. I just like how enemies in Alien Storm don't default to doing a dashing ram like in Golden Axe so it encourages you to do more than jump attack or ram attacking everything. Golden Axe is solid, but I enjoy Alien Storm a lot more. Regretfully there aren't many bosses in Alien Storm.

GA2 is objectively superior to its predecessor. Graphics, music, sound - all more varied and detailed. But most importantly the control is way better. GA (and GA3) have stiff, odd controls, whereas GA2 is very smooth. GA is barely worth a playthrough.

GA1 and 2 are absolute dogshit. Only Golden Axe 3 and the arcade games are worth playing.
