Is there any way to improve this? My trinitron only has composite, and I think s-video. Is S-video better?

>> No.9275447

yes? s-video is much better.
not sure you can run retro consoles through it though

>> No.9275448

S-video is better, yes.

SNES works with S-video, as does everything in the subsequent console generations. Just no Genesis, TG16 or anything earlier.

Why is it after two separate s video cords I still can't get video out of the s video cord?

There are plenty of guides on modding a genesis for s-video. I've done it three times.
Although I wouldn't recommend it today. They're not dirt cheap anymore and you could probably get a scart cable and convert it to s-video somehow.

is there an issue with the port on your machine? How long are the cables you've been trying?

Who knows where these cables come from these days, could be microfractures or something. But, two cables says a problem with your machine may be the issue

It's subjective. To me it's better, but composite will be better to someone else. S-Video will look clearer and get rid of dot crawl (looks like outlines of light flickering pixels around objects)

so far my only issue has been like, a sort of doubling issue. there was a palm tree, and there was a kind of chromatic abberation that doubled the stalk of the palm. this makes me think there are other issues with it, I ordered S-video and I'm unrealistically excited to see what happens with my laserdiscs and ps2

using s-video with my PS2 for the first time in the 2010s legitimately kinda blew my mind. I went straight from composite to HDMI back then and never realized how much nicer s-video looked compared to composite.

Not at all, composite > svideo is the single biggest cable upgrade there is. After that all of the colors are clearer/more saturated but svideo is the absolute sharpest the image gets.

like another anon said, the difference honestly isn't too noticeable between s-video and composite on n64. the only real difference I can see is that the HUD and textures are sharper in the image on the left.

it's the same cable I use with my gamecube and SNES and they both look noticeably clearer through it. all I'm saying is that I personally can't see as much of a difference between composite and s-video on my n64. there is a difference, I just don't really notice it as much when compared to my other consoles over s-video.

VGA (Dreamcast) > Component/RGB > S-Video > Composite > RF

>> No.9277053

>>9276090
Colors are clearly more vibrant with RGB. That said, it is interesting how the composite signal, together with the hardware AA and blur, appears to eliminate all semblance of jaggies, which was probably the intention. Obviously, even RGB has the AA and blur, so the image doesn't get that much sharper, but you do see jaggies a bit more if you look closely.

>> No.9277058

>>9277053
Forgive me if I sound completely ignorant here, but my impression of RGB versus S-video and composite has always been that I could just approximate the more vibrant colors of RGB just by adjusting my CRT's settings. Am I completely off base there?

>> No.9277062

>>9277058
Like by increasing the saturation, you mean? You could try it, but it'll result in colors getting clipped, so you'll have more vibrant colors but less detail overall. I personally wouldn't mess too much with it for that reason.

>> No.9277064

>>9277062
I figured by messing with the contrast and saturation, yeah. That's actually exactly what I did on mine and I'm happy with it.

>> No.9277069

>>9277064
Some degree of tweaking can, of course, improve the image, but again, you just gotta be careful not to go overboard or you risk losing detail. This is where something like the 240p Suite comes in handy. In any case, the whole advantage of RGB is that, ideally, you get all the colors and all the detail the console is capable of without compromise.

>> No.9277110

>>9277058
well adjusting the colour contrast reminds me of how in Super Mario you get the difference between blue sky and purple sky, at least with my CRT
