how would I find my CRT's refresh rate? I'm being super autistic and using scanlines to measure input lag for emulators. I'm assuming my CRT is more than 60HZ because its taking about 5-6 scanlines for Link to swing his sword in LttP after I press the button, but it definitely doesn't feel like there's 6 whole frames on input lag.

This brings up a point I thought about weeks ago, everyone used to put decorations and shit on top of TVs when CRTs were big and huge, but how that flat panel screens are razor thin piece of shit you can't do that anymore.

Those Sony speakers are magnetically shielded, that's how they're so close. At the time I was just using them with an old AIWA stereo. Now I use 90s JBL speakers with a stereo I built myself around the lm1875 chip.

However, using the gameboy player with the GBI mod has been such an unmitigated pain in my fucking ass, on top of not being able to play the games in full screen without some kind of issue, has me wanting to go a more complicated, but hopefully simplified way of playing pokemon games on a tv, by trying to downscale the HDMI signal a GBA consolizer would use, to coaxial RF for a more aesthetically pleasant home console experience.

Another big problem is since I use Scart with my gamecube to my PVM through the EON MrkII, I have to swap out the scart connection for AV cables temporarily just to navigate the menu or else the signal is scrambled, than switch back to the scart cable after loading into the actual GBA game. I have to do that every damn time. it's a fundamental problem with gameboy games on a tv. you can either have integer scaling or full screen but not both. the number of horizontal lines and pixels just don't line up. in my experience gbi fullscreen doesn't even look bad, but i haven't played extensively. also rf multi out adapters for gamecube/n64 aren't that expensive.

I've always wondered why people hound after PVMs when a good CRT monitor would have a similar or better quality display and can be used with a PC with relative ease. The only disadvantage a monitor has is not being directly compatible with most consoles which is easy to get around.

>> No.9274967

>>9274948
Longevity is the main reason since at this point aging is going to be the main differentiator between sets.

PVMs are going to maintain image quality for far longer than consumer sets because they were designed for commercial use to be left on 24/7. Its the same reason why consumer vehicles will start breaking down after 100,000 miles but you see commercial trucks from the 90s with millions of miles on them still in comission.

>> No.9274972

You dont want a CRT that does 480p. 480p means its an EDTV which means theres digital processing which means input lag.

>> No.9274981

>>9274914
>It does seem a little funny to have two crt's and neither one do 480p.
Nah that's perfectly normal, most TVs couldn't do 480p so it's no surprise the JVC doesn't, and the consumer sets that could do 480p (often labeled EDTVs) used digital processing which added lag. For consumer sets 480i is just the norm. Monitors can get away with a lot more obviously but in my opinion not having 480p on a CRT isn't a deal breaker. I stop noticing the flicker if I'm not looking for it, I understand people can be more sensitive to it though. I wouldn't get rid of that JVC for anything if I were you, especially not if it has component or can be RGB modded. That's a quality consumer set and in some cases their displays can offer a more desirable image than PVMs.

>> No.9274982

>>9274972
I was thinking an EDTV would be preferable for Wii/GC & Xbox/360 as lag would be less of an issue for those gens but maybe my thinking is wrong there. What be curious to hear people's preference for those consoles - 480p or 480i component?

>> No.9275016

>>9274982
I agree that lag isn't as much of an issue on those but in an ideal world you want zero. I've used both Wii and Xbox through component on a plasma in progressive resolutions and on a CRT through component at 480i (and 240p for emulators, in the Wii's case) and I definitely preferred the stability of 480p but in terms of image quality I'd say they were even. I prefer to stay on the CRT as I think the phosphor blending effect helps to hide some of the artifacts of the image like aliasing. Everything is super crisp on the plasma in 480p but depending on what you value out of the image that may not be what you want. It's really apples to oranges between the two. 480p on a flat panel is obviously technically superior but 480i on a CRT looks more the way I think it should.

There literally isn’t room in her apartment to play it at all, like it’s super, super tiny. She even suggested giving away her art desk (a very small desk that barely fits in the bedroom) so I can fit my computer in it, and I don’t want her to do that. If we were getting a new apartment together than that would be one thing but her lease doesn’t end of until towards the end of next year, and I would be moving in there in December since my parents are moving a couple hours away and I don’t want to move with them. >> No.9279105

>>9279062
Even if you don't hear the pops the CRT can still be storing voltage and I personally consider it necessary to do each and every time you're doing work in high voltage areas just because safety first, no reason not to do it. For the most part discharge circuits got really good by the time CRTs were being phased out so it's very likely that your assumption here is correct but always discharge anyway, better safe than sorry.

does anyone here have experience connecting a RTX 30 or other more recent nvidia graphics cards to a 15khz TV? I have a FV310 so I want to have it outputting to component, I feel like I remember seeing something about it actually being simpler than you'd think, something like displayport to HDMI and then HDMI to component and set a custom resolution on that port

>> No.9279213

>>9279168
there are some who have success with hdmi-component transcoders (no need to go from DP to hdmi here), but there are two bottlenecks: the resolution software really doesn't like 240p, especially nvidea drivers, so setting that up might take you from a few minutes to days figuring out what's wrong. The other thing is that component transcoders often don't support 240p, and it's really hard to tell if they do or not. sometimes the seller information doesn't have 240p support listed but the thing supports it anyways, or it has 240p listed but it doesn't actually work.
The other way is to do a displayport to vga converter and then an rgb to component transcoder. Then you output 240p over vga (with the same software difficulties) and then transcode that from rgb to component, of which the transcoders here are much more reliable. Things to consider with this route is your sync signal, which can sometimes be set to composite sync out of your video card but you may have to combine it depending on your transcoder. also it requires more hardware than the previous post but is a bit more fool-proof

>> No.9279224

I got the Interact Dreamcast s-video cable in today and it's not true s-video. Turns out it's a CVBS signal, which to my understanding is just a composite signal, but compared directly with OEM composite cables the image quality is a lot nicer. It seems to eliminate fringing and color artifacts and things are definitely more crisp, but dot crawl is still an issue, which sucks. Things end up looking a little fuzzy but for the cheap price and the jump in quality you do get with these I can't be that mad about it, though I know I'm spending more money in the long run because I'll eventually cave for OEM Sega cables. The information I'm posting here would have been nice to have before I bought these but there was like zero information out there about them aside from some old reviews I found on the wayback machine.

word, thank you. idk, it sounds like a layer of difficulty on top of everything is introduced with the fact that it looks like nvidia decided to get rid of interlaced output support after the 10 series. if my PC had a free slot it seems like it'd be so much simpler to just get an old analog out card and run it that way, but in my situation it looks like the options would basically be like.. build a crt-specific system, or run one of those old GPU's externally which is it's own set of custom hardware and hoops to jump through. might not be totally worth the trouble in the end considering the PC is already connected to a pretty nice OLED lol

Depends on the exact generation and type of CRT.
VGA monitors made in and after late 90s are extremely hard to burn-in. You basically do not have to worry about it at all.
It's still a good idea to be aware of it, while burn-in is practically impossible, your uniformity will become degraded after 20k hours or so.
But putting the display through unnecessary heat cycles is likely way worse for it, it's a better idea to blank the display with a black image or screensaver of that sort if you're not using it for less than an hour.

I upgraded from a 14M4 to a 14L5.
It turns out that both models have EXACTLY the same tube inside of them. The only difference being the electronics driving the tube.

For 240p and 480i content, they looked identical. Completely identical.

The only reason to go to an L5 is if you intend to actually use the higher resolution support (480p, 720p, 1080i).
I was able to justify it, I have a RasPi4 hooked up running at 720p. Probably the only example in the world of someone using the HD-SDI card!

As for the 14M2. Yes. There will be a difference between a 14M2 and a 14L5. The same difference would also apply for upgrading from a 14M2 to a 14M4.

instead of typing in codes, usually u can scan for codes, this involves pressing a key combo on the remote then pressing either the volume key followed by the power off button, when the tv turns off its paired then u press a button to save, try looking up the maual for ur remote for instructions.

also bear in mind if the remote is too new or too old for the tv the codes wont work, i have like 3 universal remotes from the 1990s-2000 compatibility is hit or miss, i would recommend an xbox360 remote mine worked on my trinitron from the mid 90's, so any tv from then up till 2010 sholud work, as long as its a well known make, and not something obscure. tho the 360 one does support alot even obscure shit, check the code list

I also own both M4U and L5, and for 15kHz content there's virtually no difference.
If you're planning on swapping tubes however, remember to change the yoke because the L5's is designed for higher frequencies.
One thing I dislike about the L5 is that it sits too low and the menu is harder to navigate, but it's still an upgrade since it's the Ultimate CRT for all Analog resolutions. 480p makes a difference on Xbox and some PS2 games, but it's hard to find a real use case for 720p/1080i since you lose resolution by going widescreen.

This is coming from someone who grew up with CRTs and gaming in the 80s and 90s. Why not just use a nice flat panel and buy an adaptor for your old game systems?

No it's likely perfectly good once it's properly dried. Water wont do shit to electronics* if there's no power running through it, and even when powered there's a quite a high likelyhood of avoiding all damage, speaking from experience.

* unless you let it sit long enough causing corrosion

>> No.9285735

If you let it dry it will probably be fine. Worst case scenario is having to clean corrosion from the board. There was a video I watched of some kid who was given a CRT that had been outside for literal years and it still powered on and seemingly worked fine after he left it drying in his parent's garage for a little while. That level of exposure is probably worth avoiding but a little rain is by no means a death sentence for CRTs.

That means water got inside all the vents. It got inside the speakers. Water spilled over all the tubes and capacitors and resistors.

Water = dead electronics.

All she needed to was take a slightly damp handbrush and clean off the exterior. Then clean the interior with a dry brush, vaccum, and air canister.

>OK I'm gonna put it back together let it dry off for a week.
>TEE HEE I'm impatient. Let's turn it ON after 1 day while it's still wet.

GEE lady. Maybe if you didn't try to turn it on after ONE day of air drying it might have worked better. Maybe if you left it disassembled and let everything properly air dry over a week or two weeks it would be better.

But instead you plugged it in after 1 day with it still wet. Now it's fucked.

And corrosion, before that. 90-99% IPA and a soft, non conductive brush are enough for most jobs. Compressed air is useful for the large dust particles. Even if I felt the need to take a board and wash it by thoroughly soaking it it would be with IPA and not soap and water.
Steve from RetroTech did a video hosing off his small red Samsung tube that apparently had a rat infestation at one point, but he was just hosing down the tube, not the boards, which makes a little more sense to me.

She did say she merely was curios if they could get it to work, clearly didn't really care much about the TV.
But despite all the bullshit the TV went through, it still worked. Electronics can survive some ridiculous things, but sometimes they die if you look at them wrong.

Not saying hosing CRT is something you should do, or was common, but it was done and tubes did survive it. So a TV left in the rain almost certainly still just works.

Also, I remember testing a 90s Trinitron that would only show a BW picture no matter which SCART port I used with sync-on-luma cables, but that would be weird for a Sony, so it might've been broken or just set for composite somehow. On a Trinitron you usually just have to cycle through the inputs to get to the RGB mode and I surely wouldn't have missed it though.

I can see where the arcing is with the lights off, it looks like it's on the outside of the tube, but it's between the glass and the plastic at the very end where the pins are. You mean where the neck board attaches to the tube? The neck board is usually plugged in like a socket with a few pins - you can pull the whole neck board off carefully and after discharging so you don’t damage anything. If the neck board was jostled loose and the pins aren’t making contact then that could be your arcing

Ended up scooping this hulk beast of a television today after posting this comment last night. It’s a Sony trinitron kv-32v15 from 1995. I have yet to test it as I didn’t have anybody to help me lift it into my house but it’s in my garage for the night. Owner sent me a picture of the screen and it turns on and looks to have a decent picture, we’ll see about geometry. He said he bought a house last year and it has been sitting In the basement since, was very grateful I was coming to take it. Ended up getting it stuck in my car, completely destroying the interior of my door ($120 replacement) and scratching the fuck out of the bezel. Not too happy. Will be the last time I pick up a crt for a very long time, really hoping it was worth it. I had an awful day and this just made it worse. But it will be worth it to play my dreamcast fighters on.

If I went to a designated e waste center with people around and some of those people being workers or the owner of that place, I’d probably be pressed if I just took something. Even if they don’t value the old junk they have anyways and would salvage it for money they’d do that because they’re coming from an average person’s perspective and aren’t hobbyists. I wouldn’t care if they lost inventory though, I don’t think it’s fair they get to scrap the stuff they have. I have a Mac Color Classic I've slightly modified for 640x480 output, but the display is now noticeably blurrier than when it was just 512x384. Don't get me wrong it's still totally usable, but I was wondering if there was any way to sharpen the output?

American hours are fucking mental, a few things to take away for our geographically challenged friends overseas:
>CRTs are not rare
>Anything over 50$ is not a good deal for any CRT
>Saving something from getting trashed is not stealing
Feel free to disagree with this, however you are wrong

You could try playing with the focus knobs on the flyback

>scumbag
I’m sort of against it, but enough to call someone who does that a scumbag. It’s obviously grey and far from a real social crime, do you believe e waste center owners usually aren’t scumbags?

Yanked this guy off the side of the road this morning
I'm in the suburbs of a major city so I was surprised to find one

The geometry seems a little dodgy but it looks good enough to my eye, guess I should put the 240p test suite on a flash cart and really take a look but definitely is playable and the speakers sound decent too

I have a 14" PVM and I really wanted a larger shadowmask set, this seems like it fits the bill, it's 20" and has S-Video so im pretty happy - i think it'd be great for something like PS1 and N64

nice, I find the early 3d games on those consoles benefit a lot from a little signal blending from composite or svid compared to rgb/component

I might have to build a gay little cart for it like Bob from RetroRPG is always yammering on about because I really don't have a good place to put it

how much would you pay for a pc crt like this? I want to play crpgs (sucks playing fallout in hires when everything is zoomed out) and Thief (my monitors backlight is too bright even at minimum brightness). problem is I can never find pc crts now
