VIOLENT RUMBLE 2 ANCHOR POST

VR Mega folder: https://mega.nz/folder/LVlWVK5D#H5iqeD61bSItMIVeGqymTQ

Stick to the loose files in the 'vr' folder for working on the project. You don't need the QuakeC source files unless you want to contribute code. When there is an update, sort files by date modified so that you aren't constantly re-downloading everything.

WIP Bandolier and Time Dilation powerups now included.

Finished Doom 2 for the first time. Liked 1 way more, but the combat in 2 is obviously superior given the more interesting enemy roster, also there's way more of them to kill.
Level design was frustrating and bad for the most part, a few good maps though.

94 Protons Of /vr/
Hey, Mr. Straggler sir, please hurry up and finish your map so we'll get that 20th level.

MegaUpload: https://mega.nz/folder/z9ZVEAJJ#t4IEL6VGFY7tBBMIEOKXUA
>Proton Pack 1.9.6.5 (added flats, smallfont, ENDOOM, M_DOOM, etc)
>PROTDECO17 (patch for testing your levels in GzDoom)
>94SplatDefault, 94SplatNC-HUD
>A collection of optional MIDIs for mappers to use.

Special slots:
>E1 Boss Level, x2 Paratamizers as a finale: Claimed
>E2 Boss Level: Discuss
One suggestion is a flying red Spidermind who sprays Mancubus fireballs at Plasmagun speed. Thoughts on this idea?

>Large city battle level akin to Odyssey Of Noises: Discuss
A suggestion for a larger city level was that we all take turns designing parts for it. How would we best go about this?

>Secret slaughter map, ala Go 2 It: Discuss
Multiple ideas has been suggested. One cool idea was to use an existing /vr/ map as a base and slaughterifying it, is anyone interested in this, and do they have further suggestions for a suitable candidate? Someone else suggested another approach, mind that we could have two secret slaughter maps if we wanted to.

Current Submissions: 19 Maps!

To Do:
>Interpics (optionally one per episode)
>E2 Boss
>E3 Boss
>Chainsaw
>Fist
>Super Shotgun
>Plasma
>BFG9000
>Possibly rework the Death Exit effects somehow

WANTED: 3D Modeler, one who can do weapon stuff, one which can do monsters.

Where's your grip on reality? Has anyone expressed any interest in even making these, let alone actual work done on them? The most I've seen regarding these maps are ideas, posts like "wouldn't it be cool if we did X?" Unless someone has a lot of pent-up spite for me, none of these maps will come to fruition, especially not after the I-don't-fucking-know-nth deadline being passed by 3 days. It's okay to be optimistic, but at some point it crosses the line into delusion.

Looks cool. Sigil didn't blow me away by being incredibly innovative or groundbreaking or anything, but the levels were in fact all really good and well put together. I expect Sigil 2 to be the same, it won't rewrite any rules, but it'll be damn good and worth playing.
Though, Doom 1's bestiary is a bit limited, while the expanded bestiary in Doom 2 is famously very versatile (to the point iD themselves barely scratched the surface), so perhaps Sigil 2 will be actually be a more complex and interesting experience. We'll see.
I hope he'll get more Buckethead.

I sincerely think level design is one of John Romero's strongest talents, and that he still stands out on that quality in the industry, even if he doesn't get around the mainstream these days. Part of this is The Absolute State of AAA level design (and most indie level design for that matter), part of it is he's just good.
Mainstream videogames aren't exactly awash with maps by Levellords, Blums, Casalis, or Romeros.

Honestly, those are just lingering and I should just remove them next time (unless the last guy comes through in this thread already, then I don't need to post that pasta anymore). People expressed some interest in those things over time, and there were some very good ideas, but it seems discussion just waned and the subjects weren't returned to, so I guess the interest was only passing.

Maybe I'll try to make one of those a reality on my own, but the betas come first.

>Hey, Mr. Straggler sir, please hurry up and finish your map so we'll get that 20th level.
Don't wait on me. Trust me, this map sucked.
To quote the old wisdom: "Mapping is like farting. If you have to force it, it's probably shit. " I was definitely forcing it.
The layout I made was not fun or engaging to fight 'viles in, and I should have tested each engagement piecemeal rather than make a whole layout and expect to just be able to plonk 'viles into it.
I still think it was a good concept (and a good map name), but I need to rethink my approach if I ever want to realize it. Sorry to disappoint (again), but at least I learned as a mapper from the experience.
I'll hold on to the layout, maybe it could be salvagable with different enemies, or as a deathmatch map.
I'm still probably switching to Eureka.

Also there's really no such thing as a "level designer" in the mainstream eye anymore, obviously there are level designers but you never really hear from them, and games are such massive team efforts now that its hard to believe there was any authoritative voice behind any of them.
I would kill for Bethesda to just go all in on level design for their next game, make their fucking level designers the star of the game development, make it part of the marketing, fucking even invite Romero back and give him free reign to design his own level. It's such a sadness that there's no trust in players anymore, everyone's terrified of turning away players by making something that isn't even complex, but just is something you are physically able to fall off the main path from.

IIRC the way that surfaces render in the original software renderer can on occasion warp a little, jitter in ways like that, particularly if they aren't 90 degrees, and mainly at the edge of the screen. It's easiest to see this on the triangle stairs in Entryway.
The effect is not only easier to see in high screen resolutions (being near invisible in the original 320x240), but higher screen resolutions makes the effect more pronounced too.

Someone can probably point me towards the Doomwiki article which explains this phenomenon and which corrects the parts I got wrong.

Finally finished plutonia and tnt. Was interesting how different they felt.

Plutonia
>holy fucking cancer chaingunners I thought it was just a meme
>after a while I grew strangely fond of that shit
>encounters feel like a puzzle to work out
>maps feel like a DM that's out to get you but not completely unfair
>maps had some neat concepts (the city, hunted) but still very gameplay focused and abstract

TNT
>felt easy as fuck after Plutonia
>interesting semi-realistic feel almost like Build
>neat concepts that were really memorable
>original music I liked
>recognized Ashes track in it lol

Also shout out to that one mapper for TNT who fucked up scale horribly so that stuff like chairs were sized for 20ft tall mutants and hallways were fucking football fields. Interesting to see the initial attempts to make Doom levels feel "realistic" though, made for some memorable maps, like Habitat and the admin center with the hell bits hidden in the walls. Was like a start toward Build-style level design.

True. Modern level design is such a focus tested team production that it has no personality. You look at all the big shooters from the 90s, Doom, Duke, Quake, etc, every map had some degree of personality and there's patterns to them.

Question for mappers, creatives and the like: how do you anchor yourself to a project when you have a list of ideas but dont feel the pull towards any of them over the others?

There's honestly no explanation other than space time fuckery and just how the engine handles it seems oddly intentional. In some ways, yes. The traps and overall map design are much more elaborate but since it's made for the original DOOM it lacks the punch of DOOM 2 (SSG, revies, chaingunners, arachs, elementals, viles, mancubi, etc.). If Romero made a SIGIL megawad sequel for DOOM 2 it would absolutely blow the original DOOM 2 out of the water that's for sure.

So there was this one guy last thread making an Ancient Aliens visual patch for Babel. If that's you, would you mind posting the purple flash frames you were using? I may or may not be making an example patch for AA in Decorate using the new action functions I added and I may or may not want to put that in there to complete the thing and I'm too lazy to make it myself since it's already done..
I'll credit you for it in the patch of course. This is basically just going to be an example in case some lunatic really wants to make compat patches, and also a demonstration of how to use Decorate with a ZS addon.
God help me if I can explain why the Arachnotron side plasma has to be done the way it is.
Also it's like 2AM here so if I don't reply immediately I'll get to it tomorrow.

Possibly, as stock Quake will not play track 1 as music (being that track 1 on old game discs contains the data, with the rest of them containing the music).
Sourceports might allow you to use a track 1 if you explicitly tell it to, but it also seems like one of those things you can't do because nobody ever thought to do it and it's just not necessary.

It's mainly because of Germany, where any depiction of Nazis outside of educational and documentary purposes was strictly forbidden, and you weren't allowed to sell a game openly (if at all) containing them. iD and Bethesda were retardedly lazy about this and didn't just make a special version for Germany (like they had done with the original release of Doom 2 back in 1994), and instead just applied changes across the board for ports.

Now, for the old German release of Doom 2, they plain deleted the Wolf3D assets and the levels from the .wad, and that was then ok legally (though trying to use the secret exit in Map 15 or trying to IDCLEV to the secret levels would crash the game as it still tries to access the missing data lol).
For the GBA port, they replaced swastikas and Hitler portraits with the RTCW icon and pictures of Deathshead, all the stronger gore in the GBA ports are also toned down or omitted, as well as the existing blood being colored green, which was also a requirement by the German market back then.
For the BFG Edition, the Wolf3D levels are still there, but all the special wall decorations are paved over with the adjacent wall textures, and the SS Troopers are replaced by duplicate Zombiemen but with fucky frames. The levels are also renamed IDKFA and KEEN, and have their music replaced with D_DOOM.
The Unity Ports have the Wolf3D levels mostly intact, but they actually put in some effort to plain retouch offending assets, replacing the swastika with this one triangular icon they had used for the German release of the new Wolf games, and shaving off Hitler's moustache on the portraits.

In recent years Germany relaxed these laws somewhat, and it's now ok to depict Nazis and Hitler in entertainment as long as they are depicted as obviously villainous or otherwise as opponents to fight.
Thus, Wolfenstein 3D and the original versions of Doom 2 are no longer contraband in Germany.

The rationale back when those laws were drafted might have been something along the lines of keeping it an always serious matter which you couldn't even joke about, but I think in practice that approach is at best ineffective, and at worst counterproductive. Trying to hide away national shames from most media isn't a very healthy idea, you'll just cultivate unfortunate counter cultures and neurotic mindsets.(Mind, lingering on that forever and acting like you should be ashamed of crimes by people who aren't you or your current day kin isn't healthy either, at some point history has to become old history and you have to move on).

Wolfenstein 3D doesn't show the real life horrors in detail, but that's because that would be a gigantic fucking downer and tonal schism for what's supposed to be a fun action adventure videogame with a very slightly light hearted and cartoony bent (which at any rate doesn't leave any room for ambiguity). The game isn't an accurate documentary, but also doesn't need to be.

Aside from things you can find in select mods, and re-naming a few things in the base pk3, not really. Not that what's there isn't far above the complexity of base Doom, but it doesn't appear that they're doing much on the source code side. I love FEAR and fighting and killing the replica soldiers is really fun, especially with the game's cinematic (in a good way) ragdoll physics and particle effects and the feedback you get from firefights (guns, environment, shots on enemies, enemy movement and chatter) is godly!

But yeah, I would've loved there to be at least ... Ion Fury tier enemy variety ? They have melee guys and mechs so that bumps up the enemy types to three... maybe 4 if you count the ghosts (they suck) .
Also the movement speed of the protagonist is also slow as hell. I don't need him to be DOOMguy fast, but he is really really slow, probably to give a better illusion of the enemies flanking you etc.

Sadly, their TTK is great at hiding their AI. It kind of reminds me of what Duke3D’s troopers are capable of yet they’re dead within seconds of appearing on the screen. The other route is Unreal, where early Skaarj encounters last more than a few moments - which may not feel satisfying - but they have an interesting amount of moves.
I found the Doom 3/Quake 4 approach much more favorable than what FEAR was doing, even with how dumb they can be in either of those games.

Speaking of realistic layouts, Suspended in Dusk has got to be my favourite WAD. Textures are vanilla and neatly aligned, which go hand-in-hand with the somewhat realistic architecture and layout. Enemy counts are moderate, and ammo is neither excessive nor inadequate. My only complaint is that you get the SSG far too late in the game; it's tedious spamming the SG at Pinkies.

What I intensely dislike is that a lot of these shooters make themselves look worse in order to chase that "retro" look and sometimes it works, sometimes the game goes way overboard with stripping down polygons / detail and it's a bit depressing.

Especially when you consider Ashes 2063 / Ion Fury putting a lot of effort into looking good, despite still looking instantly like a classic shooter. Hell, some of these entries made me appreciate DUSK more because while it's a bit too low poly for my tastes, it's at least not unbearable with it's style.

Al-fucking-right! I hope this shines a bit more light on this underrated classic. A new level editor sounds promising too, maybe we'll see at least a few efforts for map packs.

Being able to play the game with the remake's soundtrack is a strange option. I honestly like the remake soundtrack for what it is, even if it misses the point on a lot of the original music by turning it all to metal shreds, but I guess it's kind of nice to have there? It doesn't fit classic ROTT itself though. Maybe they're planning to rerelease the remake at some point, I heard it doesn't run quite perfectly on modern hardware.

>>9262973
Hopefully that's something one can address in options.

>>9263145
I still have no interest in the faux retro shooters, I've yet to see one which doesn't look mostly boring (and the manufactured marketing phrase "boomershooter" makes me retch). I like seeing ROTT get a new release because all the existing sourceports are dogshit, and I think the game deserves better, it got overshadowed HARD by Doom 2 back in the day.

I won't buy on launch, I wanna find out whether or not they fucked up, but if it comes out good, then I'm interested.

The motivation for starting next thing is looped into finishing current thing. It's just a discipline thing. At most, you write the new idea down in a brief form somewhere so you can return to it when you are ready to start a new thing, but otherwise any such motivations are channeled around into 'get on with current thing so we can move on to next thing'.
Once you start bargaining with yourself or allowing yourself to work on multiple things in parallell, it's fucking over. Don't do that. It's just chasing a dopamine rush of a new exciting thing that will always, always get boring once you've seen the basic part take shape in the first 20% of your effort.

Personally, I think it's more tiresome when developers try to backpedal from it after doubling down on "My game is X meets Y". It can happen unintentionally. Audience can also sperg out and be overly excited for no good reason. Otherwise, you either go all in or keep your mouth shut and don't make such a big deal out of it.
To be fair, you can say that it's hard to say whenever developer just sucks at communication or tries to use it as an excuse to ignore criticism.

> Environmental destruction is not exclusive to FEAR, and the "cues from" seems to end there
Most of the "FEAR cues" is not about the environmental destruction but rather how enemies communicate, the claim of them flanking the player, exhibiting 'smart' behavior.
How far that claim carries itself is another matter of course.

It's just mediocre badly balanced gameplay mod. I've never used it, but never hated it either. People are free to play it and enjoy it, if that's their thing.

People hated Brutal Doom for outside reasons. It brought lot of zoomers into community who demanded that every mod and wad should be compatible with brutal doom. They would downgrade your wad, if it was unplayable with brutal doom's balance changes. They all thought that vanilla was boring and refused to play on vanilla. Also it's developer used to be childish bastard who stole stuff from other mods and sperged out when called out.

But now things are better. Zoomers and the developer have grown into adult human beings, there are shitloads of better gameplay mods and nobody claims that brutal doom is "the definite way to play doom". Now it's just one mod among others, not something that tries to replace vanilla.

Caco. In general I see Caco around Doom things much more often than the Revenant. Revenant is more memorable to me personally because he is funny. He looks like a dancing skeleton and he can dance up to you and slap you to death. His missiles are kind of troll-y too since they can be homing missiles or just regular missiles. Just a dick thing to do. Like a silly dancing skeleton would probably do.

Honorable mention to Pain Elemental for simultaneously invoking a pang of "aww" immediately followed by "KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT." That's a strange demon.

Ok, about Realms Deep. The thing that interested me the most which i didn't see yet was White Hell. Partially because the track in the trailer was a shameless ripoff of Escape from New York theme, but the style reminiscent of Unreal, Turok and Heavy Metal FAKK 2 was interesting. Models could use some extra effort, they would have been criticized even back then.
Phantom Fury and Last Exterminator look promising. Everyone these days is going for DOOM style pure shooting and it is nice to see games with Build big three design philosophy.
I already follow Arger and X Slayers because they go for aesthetics that is not commonly used.
There are lots of games there that try hard to be "ironically bad" like Fish Person Shooter and Eggwife, but they just are. Unironically.
Thanks for reading the blog i guess. >>9262784 is right, FPS became the staple of indie gaming and with that came the exploitation of le retro pixel a e s t h e t i c. Most of the games shown are shovelware, especially muh low poly horrors like Coven (low poly Unity require even less work then pixels). But honestly, is it bad? Quality seem to be consistent, and i'll take lots of games over none even if they are pretty formularic and derivative.

That's a proper re-release from General Arcade, but it does seems like they're not bringing back multiplayer. I know it was a shitty mess added in a patch. This is a not an excuse for not delivering something that the original release had.
General Arcade were responsible for other re-releases like Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition & Shadow Warrior Classic Redux + console ports for Ion Fury though.

There shouldn't be problems with neither of those. Github page for Wolf4SDL lists all the versions it supports. For example:
>Wolfenstein 3D v1.1 full Apogee
>Wolfenstein 3D v1.4 full Apogee (not tested)
>Wolfenstein 3D v1.4 full GT/ID/Activision
I believe that Steam & GOG should offer the latter option.

Just a dependable assault rifle isn't a bad thing in itself, just make it so there are things it's not cut out for doing.
If you don't have a grenade launcher on it, then it can't blow shit up for you, and maybe some enemies shrug off bullets and need to be handled with explosive ordnance.
Optionally it has a launcher which is handy, but it's slow to reload and has only the fraction of the effect of your rocket launcher, which punches through tough armor in ways rifles and conventional grenades just can't.

I guess the tl;dr of it is that you need to weigh the role and purpose of the player's arsenal, and also consider that maybe one gun shouldn't be able to handle everything (or if it can, then it needs things to balance it, such as limitations in ammunition).

>> No.9264841

Probably not in our lifetime. The first issue is that the public is just incredibly distrustful of embedded electronics, especially shit which can brick your gun ("Smart" guns for instance). The only electronics which people tolerate is for optics and for stuff like lights and lasers, and people are often pretty demanding about optics with electronics.

The other is the widespread abundance of purely mechanical guns, and how dead reliable they are, not requiring any batteries at all, just your muscle power and the power from the cartridge itself.
It's going to be an incredibly difficult sell to have a gun where magazines are blocked by programs from being used in unauthorized guns, that's akin to some really old guns, like the Russian PPSh-41, where individual magazines outright needed to be tested and paired to individual guns in sets, because they didn't freely interchange and work properly otherwise. That was recognized as a serious problem at the time the gun was new, and it was only tolerated at all because they were so badly needed and it was the option they had to resort to.
That isn't a thing people will tolerate with a new and modern gun, and magazine DRM will be looked at as the same thing, except intentional.
I think more advanced optics is something we may see, but DRM will lead to widespread jailbreaking practices.

The ZM66 in Hideous Destructor is hilarious, and I could maybe see an institution or organization vying for control features for security reasons, but for a commercial market weapon it would be near impossible to sell.

>> No.9264869

Gatling comes from Dr. Richard Gatling, who developed the handcranked manual machinegun around the US Civil War. Those patents and trademarks belonged to him and maybe his estate, and he was also the first to rig an electric motor to such a gun, but those were all very long expired by the time of development of the M61 Vulcan cannon and the later M134 Minigun.

Gatling's name just remains on that style of rotary machinegun/machinecannon because he pioneered it and was famous for it, the concept is public domain. iD Software probably didn't know/care about that kind of detail, possibly they also didn't want to say "Gatling Gun" because that phrase specifically easily brings to mind the original antique handcranked blackpowder guns, which wouldn't feel very sci-fi.

Wolf4SDL is more like Crispy Doom. Some quality of life changes but closer to the original.

Maps themselves are pretty simple, yet challenging. Play them on HMP if you don't want to have a rough ride.
Wad is using Doom2 iwad. Map design is boom compatable. No extra graphic outside one SKY texture. Custom ambient .ogg soundtrack is present though. Some extra decorations taking numbers 1488-1508 are present, so not all mods may fit in.
Coop is supported.
Using other source ports with shadowmaps like K8Vavoom is possible, but map geometry may be broken in some places.

I already know both of these. The left-side texture misalignment was caused by auto-aligning only the textures under the rock canopy (above, out of frame), but they were already lower-unpegged. I fixed it seconds after recording that WEBM.
The misalignment on the pillar was caused by the auto-alignment function (A or Ctrl+A, doesn't matter in this case because it's all the same height), because the texture's length isn't equal to the pillar's circumference.

So this is basically a slight pre-release/test build because I'm not sure about the baron change yet. Basically, play some maps with barons, see if they're more or less cancerous. The balls each now do 9d4 down from 14d4, so it's the same overall damage per attack, just spread out differently.
I also included the experimental compat patches I made for Doom Zero and Ancient Aliens, as well as an example "Classic" Plasma Rifle addon. They'll only work with this version (and the new release when it's "done") so make sure if you use them you load the right one.
Proper load order for the patches is Babel -> Map WAD -> Patch.

So is this a WAD? How many levels? I made it to Map 06 just now. The beginning seems to lean heavily into the survival horror thing, with limited ammo, it's dark, etc, then by Map 03 I think ammo ceased to be a problem, and soon the twisting, narrow corridors gave way to some grid-like square rooms. I personally don't mind them, but I'm a sucker for early-style maps. A lot of people aren't so not sure how well that stuff will go over. I did have fun, though the enemy variety is pretty limited. Of course, this means that when a hell knight does pop up he feels more threatening.

I don't normally use gzdoom or it's gimmicks, but I could dig the lighting thing you were going for. I had to run it in opengl es with hardware acceleration though, otherwise the framerate would suffer immensely, not sure if this is the way I'm supposed to play it.

I like Map 05's midi and vibe, didn't expect a dead simple type thing that early. It was a little easy though, but I was also playing continuously. Keep it up brother.

Mini Artis:
>Melee only
>Hyper aggressive
>Draws aggro
>Invulnerable
>Takes a lot to charge up and can only be used when you have filled enough meter for a pip

Sven:
>Ranged only
>Lazier about attacking
>Doesn't draw aggro
>Can be hit and stunned
>Quicker to charge up, and can be deployed with a partial meter
>Can be petted with altfire

>So is this a WAD?
Kinda. It has custom ambient tracks, tweaked lighting effects and some extra decorations, but I didn't used any advanced mapping stuff which GZDoom builder provides and kept map info in strict complevel-9 Boom format to allow maximum compatibility.
>How many levels?
Seven. Or eight if you will count the "final boss room". Or nine if you also will count the secret level.
>The beginning seems to lean heavily into the survival horror thing, with limited ammo, it's dark, etc, then by Map 03 I think ammo ceased to be a problem.
I tested every level in pistol start mode on UV without using goods in secrets to have a right balance. Since I'm not all that good the difficulty may get a bit off closer to the end. But yeah, I really tried to squeese the pickups like in survival horror games. This is why you usually find items only around dead marines, soldiers or in security/medical rooms.
>soon the twisting, narrow corridors gave way to some grid-like square rooms. I personally don't mind them, but I'm a sucker for early-style maps
I agree, this is still in the beta and late maps are rough sketches which lack some fine details.
>I did have fun, though the enemy variety is pretty limited. Of course, this means that when a hell knight does pop up he feels more threatening.
The idea was to keep things "in line" since fighting in the dark is a tad bit different from fighting things when you see them. Every level you get one "new" weapon and two "new" monsters to fight against, so when when game go full royale, you already be fully adapted to the new rules of combat.
>I had to run it in opengl es with hardware acceleration though, otherwise the framerate would suffer immensely
I have a 2GB VRAM on my machine and I can play it smooth in 960x540 resolution. GZDoom just sucks sometimes.
>Keep it up brother.
Thx. When you will reach the end, drop the screen so I can see how much extra ammo you had in the end so I will know how much I need to balance out.

subtract a few BFG shots for the cyberdemon. You can finish Map 07 pretty quickly if you stumble on the exit like I did, but I went ahead and cleared the whole map out. I did not find the secret level, I was playing continuously on UV, found maybe half of all secrets, or a little less.

Map 06 gets confusing and I'm a retard so the yellow key switch room was tripping me up at first, especially since the place is kinda dark, but that's on me. I liked it overall, though it was a bit easy when playing without pistol start. Also confusing at times but I think you were going for that.

Pretty much everything you said applies to the ZM66. The reason in-lore why it is so widespread is because of a monopoly on production of weaponry by the biggest and most dominant human governing/military body in the solar system, it's the ONLY option to buy or sell for 'a rifle' unless you go to smaller niche markets and it is forced on people and soldiers all around. Widespread jailbreaking practices are already showcased in-game by just forcefully jamming reused magazines in as the mechanical components of the gun are still functional despite the DRM fucking over the gun's ammo counter and other electronics in the magwell that increase jamming chances.

Both in-game and in-lore, most armed forces would rather use a Liberator or 9mm alternatives as they offer much better ballistics without as much jamming and the rarity of them being the cost of brass and UAC lawyers/military action, the commercial civilian market has pretty much just resorted to use and modify shotguns to the point of making fully automatic variants of existing designs.

GLES cuts a lot of corners in the name of compatibility and has basically no shader support and fucked up model rendering off the top of my head. It's fine if you're not playing mods that use that stuff, but if you have a GPU that can do OpenGL 4 or Vulkan, you're going to get better minimums with those backends, which is where it matters. Getting 1000 FPS with GLES in a simple scene is useless if the others are hitting 300 anyway.

I like to think that female demon could have been the D64 Archvile but because of how they struggled with bringing the same enemy to PS1 Doom, they'd probably give it new abilities or something in D64
The Mother Demon has homing rockets, so maybe those 4 flame attacks could have belonged to an Archvile
Even 3 and Eternal gave it "floor fire" attacks that move through the floor
What i remember the most out of SoD Ultimate Danger is how the last boss room had UAC related assets, before a new version of it changed to different assets

Fellas, I'm looking for a mapset that I played a while ago but can't for the life of me remember the name of. The only details that I distinctly remember is that one of the maps was a cathedral, with a maze garden in front of it. If I recall correctly, you start the level either in a graveyard or close to it, and go through the maze to get to the actual structure. I believe it used either OTEX or cc4-tex. I remember playing it around 2019-2020 so it's definitely something earlier than that. Checked the cacowards but none of the mapsets ring a bell, at least at first glance. The map itself is more on the slaughterwad side. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the same mapset or even map had a red stone textured curved corridor with many revenants along it. Hope you guys might know what I'm talking about.

That's the thing. If you don't have a GPU that can do those things, GLES is the best choice overal for performance and compatibility.
Also that's a disgusting performance drop on a 'simple scene' just for changing renderers, from 1k to 300? And the worst, it sounds about right with how poorly those renderers perform in actuality, considering the hardware is what's pulling its weight around and compensating for their inadequancies.
