The Neo-geo has its niche as a taste of the 90s arcade experience, but even the DC surpasses it with more impressive arcade games as well as a more balanced software library.

Only a single EB in my city of 200,000 people had an actual neongeo for sale in store. No other game retailer citywide would touch it. They had 2 of each launch title behind the counter, and 2 systems for sale. By mid1992 one system and 3 games sold and then the entire display was removed from the store to make room for more gameboy stuff.

They never brought even even one new game while they had it, just those original $200 launch titles. It didn't last as long as the atari lynx, but the neo geo tied up way too much retail shelf space for its locking cabinet so they had to get rid of it.

Well yeah it came out in 1990, what did you expect? 2D sprite/tilemap rendering and 3D polygonal rendering are two very different things, and while the Neo Geo has some pretty good sprite scaling/rotation being able to fully transform those sprites at a decent rate (like in a way the Saturn renders texture polygons) just requires a hefty amount of processing speed that neither the Neo Geo's display processor nor it's CPU has.

Sure, but the Mega Drive could croak out games like Star Cruiser and Hard Drivin', and to my knowledge the Neo Geo is in no way equipped for even that due to fixed 2D sprite-strip display capabilities.

For what it's worth I think the Neo Geo is a cool console, it just has a very niche and small library and is too pricey for most classic-era collectors. If it had better represented other genres it would have been more memorable, but then again its games reflect SNK's arcade market of the time period.

I'm no expert on the subject but from what I have read on /vr/ and other boards the Neo Geo was one of the easiest systems to emuate at a very accurate level due to an uncomplicated hardware design. The games didn't use that many tricks like console systems needed to in order to squeeze as much power out as possible and chips making up the system were all common non-proprietary stuff.

If I am wrong I would be interested in knowing why.

Also, I'll ask here since every time I try to make a thread about it, jannies report it to mods for some reason (despite being totally retro-related), but just WHAT is the deal with Dion? Did he really flood the US Neo Geo market with repros? What's the QRD on him? All I know is that he was sort of like the american representartive/official import guy of Neo Geo/SNK and he hated fighting games or video games in general, he was more about living the yuppie lifestyle and the ridiculous high price of the Neo Geo attracted him.
Also that he used to hang out with Reggie Fils-Aime when they were young.

Because Dion didn't flood any market with repros. He *tried* to flood the market with "Freaked" games. In other words, he shredded the original manuals and inserts for games he was reselling and replaced them with reprinted "Neo Geo Freaks" (Dion and his partner Chris' shady NG sales company, deliberately named after the Japanese magazine in an attempt to seem more legitimate) branded crap. Anything that couldn't be reprinted got an "official" Neo Geo Freaks anti-tamper sticker slapped on it. Pic related.

If Dion is going to be remembered for anything, it's going to be the collective fuckups that were "Neo Geo Freaks" as a company. Putting aside all the other stupid shit they did over the years, the company itself was a weird sort of MLM thing, pushed toward gullible idiots looking to be part of an "exclusive" club. As in, you couldn't just buy whatever you wanted from them, even if they had it for sale. You had to buy X amount of games/merch from a lower "tier" in order to be eligible to buy games/merch from the next higher tier. There were other equally bizarre rules you had to follow, but this post is already too long for the average chantard.

There are so many stories to tell. How about the time they claimed to have a working proto for Last Odyssey that they were going to show off at the upcoming trade show? Turns out it was a VCR hidden under the table playing prerecorded footage with a visible Neo Geo on the table that wasn't actually hooked up to the TV that no one was allowed to touch. Or the time Dion tried to sell his baby blue Porsche on eBay autos and got caught for shill bidding when it was discovered he was having Chris make fake bids on his own account? Or the time Dion met his childhood hero Donald Trump and they spent a few hours discussing the finer points of business? Pic related.

>>9263653
>What the fuck is NG Freaks and what was the hustle?
I've already explained the hustle. There wasn't much more to it, other than the ambiguously gay duo occasionally conning some piece of SNK/Neo Geo lore away from its original owner to be thrown up on a high tier for sale to the right sucker. Although this did end up backfiring on Chris at least once. He had gone to Japan to acquisition (read: blatantly steal) leftover merchandise/memorabilia from when Neo Geo World finally closed. He came back to the states with, and I can't make this shit up, SNK stamped bar soap from the restrooms, SNK branded floor mats, bath house towels, and a couple of really gaudy statues of Mai Shiranui. All of these were seized before he could sell them off by the LVPD as part of an ongoing lawsuit SNK had against both him and the company. (For the record, he wanted 25 grand a piece for the floor mats.)

I'm not sure how else I can explain it.
>Was he effectively just buying and rebranding actual NG carts, or what?
Yes, that's exactly what they were doing. They were buying carts, in bulk, from SNK (under an exclusivity deal for some titles, as if it wasn't bad enough) and then removing and shredding the inserts to be replaced with their own reprinted NGF branded stuff, which they referred to as "corrected" inserts. The manuals that didn't get shredded and reprinted got anti-tamper NGF branded stickers slapped all over them to make sure they couldn't be put back to their original condition without defacing them.

I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from, but when I say "shredding" I don't mean that as hyperbole or as a euphemism for anything. I quite literally mean they were shredding official SNK products and replacing them with their own. We know this because they flat out told us they were doing so, and then proceeded to post extensive photographic proof of the claim on their website. All of that product is forever lost.

This story is interesting enough that it deserves an autistic essay post so we have the full picture. But let me get this straight: this guinea had some kind of relationship with SNK at one time, got hold of SNK games and merch and then tried to rebrand the shit as a higher value commodity? I don't get the point though, why bother destroying the stuff? If anything he'd just hoard the real shit in a warehouse or something and flood the market with his rebranded trash; destroying it seems pointless. Was he just trying to control the entire flow of SNK hardware and merch and banking on some big nostalgia drip? I have a hard time believing anyone could be retarded enough to think this would work, but I'm intrigued.

>This story is interesting enough that it deserves an autistic essay post so we have the full picture.
I agree, but I'm not the autist to do it. Bad enough I lived through it, although thankfully I never ran face first into an NGF scam.
>this guinea had some kind of relationship with SNK at one time
Their claim, and this was "sort of" corroborated by the SNK of the time, was that NGF were the "exclusive distributors of SNK Neo Geo products" for the North American market. Trying to unpack this claim is what muddies the waters. It's obvious that NGF did have some sort of agreement with SNK, but it's all but guaranteed that agreement wasn't what NGF was claiming. The problem is that no one seems to know what that actual agreement was. It's been speculated that they had procured distribution rights to a number of AES titles, and nothing more. They were making it sound like they were basically the North American division of SNK, with all the rights and benefits that would entail.
>got hold of SNK games and merch and then tried to rebrand the shit as a higher value commodity?
There was no try. They did it. (KOF 2000 sticks out in my memory as a particularly egregious example. Are there any original non-Freaked US AES copies of this game in existence? I don't actually think there are.)
>I don't get the point though, why bother destroying the stuff?
To legitimize the company and the multi-layer sales scheme they were pushing to their customer base. I don't really think they were thinking far enough ahead to realize that destroying the originals was a poor choice. I think, in their minds, they just wanted to make sure that only the NGF branded stuff could ever exist going forward. A guarantee that someone with a hookup couldn't ever undervalue an NGF branded product by possessing an authentic SNK one. They figured the easiest way to accomplish this was to simply make sure no authentic product existed.

>Was he just trying to control the entire flow of SNK hardware and merch and banking on some big nostalgia drip?
Yes, but I don't think some future nostalgia trip/NG renaissance was in their plans. Again, I don't think they were thinking that far ahead. If they were, they wouldn't have destroyed the originals. They would've realized the long term investment possibility in selling those off years later.
> I have a hard time believing anyone could be retarded enough to think this would work, but I'm intrigued.
Neither of them are particularly bright.

>Why antagonize your customer base in this way?
Because they saw the Neo Geo customer base and the Neo Geo Freak customer base as two VERY different groups of people. They were quite vocal about this over the years, likely in an attempt to add to the exclusive club mentality they were trying to foster with the multi-tiered Big Tymer schtick. Not to mention that they knew what they were doing, and realized that if you didn't fall for the scam already then you were never going to, and thus would never be one of their customers.

SNES was not as good, let alone better. Genesis was about even with SNES.

It must have been miserable to be a Western SNK/Neo Geo collector since...well, forever, I guess. But to think all this fuckery was going on twenty years ago and longer. This asshole and his operation must have ruined and altered thousands of titles for a classic console before it had even finished its run.

>the only reason it gets so much dickriding is the cost prohibited elitism.
the elitism around the home system was engineered on purpose in the west at the time to justify the prices and to justify higher and higher prices for newfags to offload unsold stock (see: NGF old tymer), and of course people still went with it after SNK went bust for their own benefit. It's the prime reference for price manipulation, but let newfags give oldfags their retirement money, I don't give a fuck if people are this dumb.

>Best home console technicaly for fighters and shooters since it was the only system capable of providing identical arcade experience
It's the best home console for genres that actually matter. Fighters, shooters, puzzlers, sports, nice quick and snappy games that are easy to learn and difficult to 1cc. Games that actually respect your time and intelligence. Games you can pick up and put down when you're busy being an actual adult, something many of the posters here wouldn't know shit about.

>But overall, very bad cost performance
Get a job.

>and poor library
Get some taste. RPGs are for literal FAGGOTS who have nothing else going on in their sad little lives. Not everyone has time to sit there tapping a single button watching numbers go up. Some of us have careers, families, chores, volunteering, other hobbies. I'll be DAMNED if some faggot kid is going to try to tell me the Neo Geo's library wasn't top of the line.

>SNES was a better system for everything else
You're seriously comparing that underpowered ugly purple and gray piece of shit children's toy to the fucking Neo Geo? The LITERAL arcade experience vs muddy colors, low-animation sprites without proper sprite scaling, SHIT music samples, pathetic resolution, some Fisher-Price controller, and no memory card? Are you out of your mind? Are you by chance a functional retard? Even the Genesis poops on it, and at that point it's like arguing over who gets the table scraps.

This is a Neo Geo thread. Don't bring up that toddler trash ever again.

3 decades of utter beauty that to this day still have not been surpassed. Show a little respect.

You seem to be conflating "mad" with "calling a retard a retard." When you reprimand your son (provided you'll ever breed), does that make you "mad"? Furthermore, I was just outside earlier and I don't know what you mean by mermaid.

Less than that.
I did some checking around

Basic Cbox Supergun $30 shipped
Basic Neo Geo 1 slot $50 shipped
2x Cbox Saturn-clone controllers $27 shipped

So not just the MVS itself but the whole set-up can be assembled for less than $100 minus a game to play. Which should be a 161-in-1 cart for $60.
