Are the Donkey Kong Land games good?

they're good for what they are

>> No.9259081

By Game Boy standards, they're above average. But that doesn't mean they're ideal to play in the current year.

Not really.

Copes.

Like many GB/GBA ports, they were amazing to have on a handheld at the time, but today, if you want to play DKC2 in bed, there are a million better options.

That said, GB games have their own special appeal.

DKL is quite good, though suffers from very busy graphics on a regular Gameboy and was designed for Super Game Boy play. DKL2 is a pseudo port of DKC2 with all the levels being reimagined versions of DKC2 levels. The layouts are new, but if you've played DKC2 it still feels like you're retreading old ground and makes the game feel like a poor man's version. DKL3 has original levels again, but suffers tremendously from a lack of level gimmicks that results in most levels sharing the same theme feeling incredibly samey. I remember being really disappointed in this one.

Some of the music is really good.

I'm sorry but you need to 18 to be on 4chan

This is the sentiment I have. I played DKL 1+2 when I was a kid and they were fun, but you can literally play DKC 1-3 on a modded DS or 3DS cutting into the mobile appeal of the DKL games.

inb4 emulation sucks fat elephant dicks, point still stands

Think of them as their own series. Don't expect a 1:1 recreation of the console trilogy. They have their own worlds that are unique to each game. I think they work really great for a handheld platformer and I appreciate the 8 bit handling of the DKC aesthetics. I think they play best on the super gameboy.

>mobile appeal
This alone doesn't carry a game, and many Game Boy games continue to be good years after being portable was no longer a draw.
Arguably it never applied to the DKL games at all, since they were almost unplayable in even the best of lighting conditions.

I guess if a modded 3DS is your only real experience with Game Boy games, you might not understand that. But also you can just play the real games instead of pretending that liking the objective downgrades somehow makes you special.

I played DKL1 for the first time last year on an AGS101. It was good enough to keep my attention but not good enough to ever want to get 100%

>> No.9259214

Never liked them. But now I found their charm.

DKL2 has good physics going for them (but the small screen always gonna be a problem)

>> No.9259218

People here forget DKL1 and DKL3 are their own games, using 8bit version of the SNES assets and brand new ones too, especially in DKL1. DKL2 was the closest to it's console counterpart with the exception of mixing Krem Quay and Crocodile Cauldron as a single area.
People also complain DKL graphics are too busy, but you forget in a GBC you can have the background in one palette and the player and enemy sprites in another color palette.

Great gameboy games. No reason to really play them over the SNES versions.

??? Did you miss that last part or something?

They are additional Donkey Kong games you can play. If that's something you crave, they're great.
I really liked the first land when I was a kid.

DKL1 is amazing, better than DKC, but not as good as DKC2. I never played the others but heard they were mostly downgrades of their SNES counterparts.

Dangerously based

I did, woops. Too used to people bringing up the busy graphics arguement forgetting about Super GB and GBC. The arguement is still valid enough but I doubt anyone would be playing DKL on real on the old graybrick when the revision exist.

You modded your childhood 3DS and downloaded some bad games you saw on a hidden gems list.

They are ok but play a lot better on the Super Gameboy or GBC.

>> No.9260063

The first one is the best. The new worlds were good enough to be in DKC.

Reminder that the pirate levels in DKL 1 came out before DKC 2

It also suffers from fucked-up physics and glitchy oddities like instantly dying if DK/Diddy gets hits and falls off-screen.

>>9259071
I can only speak for the first one, but I found it to be both really good and really hard. I don’t think I ever 100%ed it.

If you like the original DKC, DKL is a great continuation of that style

>If you like the original DKC, DKL is a great continuation of that style
If you really think about it, it's the only true sequel to DKC. The other games, both in the country and land games, for no reason at all got rid of Donkey Kong.
