>> No.9258660

Seeing Yoshi on the castle roof was literally all anyone wanted to collect 120 stars for, because gaming culture at this time was built around rumors and secrets. 3D worlds seemed endless and packed with secrets to kids who had no idea what making a game actually entailed; it felt like if you could get past invisible walls or past mirrors you could enter hidden worlds that the developers intentionally put there.

Yoshi on the roof was one of those things that sounded like a rumor but was real, and it was very exciting to actually unlock it.

An extra model in a game was a significant amount of content in those days. How many object models are in SM64? Quite a few enemies are sprites. It was actually amazing that Nintendo went to the trouble of creating a Yoshi model for the small percentage of players that would get 120 stars.

But, anyway, the point of 100% clearing a game is to overcome the challenge. The bonus at the end is just a nice acknowledgement from the developers that they appreciate the players who play their games to 100%.

>> No.9259080

Luigi had a unique sprite and attributes going back as far as Mario Bros 2. By 1996, he was clearly his own character in both games and media.
The real reason he was cut is because there was no reason for him to show up without multiplayer. You could argue the same about Yoshi after his riding mechanic was cut, but for a one-off secret at the end it didn't matter which scrapped model they reused.

Nigga, some developers at the time didn't even know how to make things work in 3D and you are expecting post-game content like a game has nowdays.
You are so sooo fucking stupid, this game at the time, was long enough for months and you pretend more content, this game wasn't built like a cheap rpg in which they make you grind for hours for some stupid jpg element to hide their lack of gameplay or creativity. It was a game full of action and adventure.

The yoshi ending was good, a sweet ending, we all wanted to keep playing the game, but now you have romhacks and more sequels. Stop bitching like a zoomer just because its free.

This is why early 3D sucked cock. Super Mario World had more levels, setting variety, power-ups, MULTIPLE, RIDEABLE Yoshis, each with their own powers. I love Super Mario 64 today for its satisfying movement, but when Nintendo 64 was new I was constantly depressed by the absolute dearth of content in every 3D franchise entry. Tick Tock Clock ain't so bad, Rainbow Ride though yeah that can be annoying to get 100 coins.

Super Mario Sunshine on the other hand.
120 shines is pure filler, a huge chunk of them are blue coins, and the shines aren't intrinsic to game progression; they're incidental to beating Shadow Mario in each area which is the only requirement to unlocking the final level to beat the game.

Sunshine's 120 shines are far less satisfying to collect, and the reward is completely non-existent, just a single worse looking ending screen. It has neither the journey nor the destination.

Everyone had their own methods to try to get up to the roof without 120 stars. The actual gameplay reward was just icing, seeing what sounded like an easily fake rumor come to life was mystifying.

It was all about that particular era. You had a completely random shot in the dark as to if what you'd been told was true or not. But the times it was made all the hard work worth it.

Nowadays everyone just looks up a Youtube video of stuff like this and all of the secrets are datamined with proof within 24 hours, so no one cares anymore and accomplishments mean nothing. It's a huge shame.

Enough weight to feel solid with enough leeway and moves to improvise well.
With Mario 64 most of the moves are built into Mario (jump, wall jump, triple jump, ground pound, punch, dive, slide, etc), but in SMW its more that you can make snap decisions to grab a turtle she'll, toss it in the air, cape spin an enemy kick the shell into three more, etc. The physics are solid in SMW but have less weight to them. Mega Man 9 fucked everything up when it came to secrets and rumors. The devs literally made up an easter egg in an attempt to get people to play the game more, and dozens of people (including the people who made Pop Fiction from GT) wasted hours upon hours looking for something that never existed.

Ever since, nobody hunts for easter eggs or secrets just in case it is a giant waste of time like with MM9. If there is something hidden in a game today, it will only be found by accident or a dataminer.
