holy fuck I never knew this! This changes totally everything.

How did they get away with this but then it is just called sampling and common for rap. Still did they have to get a license.

Isn't this game Japanese or British? Really makes me wonder how Japs found out about such obscure music. Thanks for the awesome reply. I just love this board.

Do you know the original songs for the other Parapper songs and I was always under the impression that it is all original stuff made for the game.

I don't know any more examples, but I'm sure they are out there. I didn't know about this particular song coming from CAN until I was falling asleep listening to a CAN playlist on Spotify.
This song came on and I was jolted awake from the memories of Parappa.

Japanese, but the creators were a little bit Westaboo, I guess. All the songs are English only (the JP versions of the games just change the subtitles) and even outside that, all the voice actors are native English speakers with the exception of Master Onion whose name I unfortunately can't remember but he does a bunch of voices including Joe Chin and is bilingual in Japanese and English, but puts on an extra silly Oriental accent for Onion. He's a sound director at Namco now. Anyway, to answer the question I've heard the Can song brought up before but never heard any of the other originals; I'm sure they exist for at least some songs and just no one's made the connection yet.

>I'm sure they exist for at least some songs and just no one's made the connection yet.

that is crazy after all those years.
It is also interesting that Japanese knew about an obscure krautrock band like Can. I mean I listen to Can but I do not know how popular they were in Japan or if their records even got sold in Japan.

I am really wondering who made the music for this game like do you think it was just one guy like the Sega guy that did all the Sega music because after all those are complex Rap lyrics and the average Japanese person sucks at English, back in the 90s probably way more than now but maybe the Japanese education system has not changed much and they still suck as much as they've used to but I would not know.

Anyway English is not my native language and I would not have been able to write such lyrics and I'd say you can judge my language skills based on this text.
So I am pretty sure that they had English people writing those lyrics just as they had native speakers sing those songs which really really makes me wonder about the history of those songs.

Someone must know more. There must be an article in a weird Japanese magazine.
After all this was a big Playstation title and I would say the first game that introduced rhythm games to the west / drew more attention to this now dead genre (dead in the west).

why?

you are probably just ignorant and think that I'm ignorant while you are ignorant towards your own ignorance and don't take other cultures and countries into account.
Heck I bet English is your first language and the only language you speak and you've never lived abroad.

Even though you are a dick on a high horse who won't be capable of having an a deep conversation I'll explain shit to you anyway.

Look at the Japanese music genre City Pop. It was popular in Japan in the 80s while the west was totally unaware of this genre until like 2010, in fact it got more popular in like 2014.
How did people find out? Because of YouTube and the internet.

now change the perspective: the west didn't know something about Japan. Japan was a pretty isolated island in the 90s, internet wasn't so big yet and the average Japanese sucks at English, back then even more than today which is still awful. So it's not weird to wonder how they should have known.

The German translator for Nintendo was at Nintendo Japan and showed the music composer of Zelda link's awakening the music genre "techno" - that was in like 1992 when techno exists since the 80s but the Japanese music composer was unaware of that genre.
So yeh sure Krautrock and other obscure music is something every kid in Japan knows. Don't take shit for granted and think for one second before you call others names.

This game is fucking impossible. The timing window is way too small.

>> No.9259039

The timing windows are actually just wrong. Press the button along with the rhythm rather than when it shows to be pressed. It's easier if you're more musically inclined. When I realized this the game became a breeze for me.

Before anyone asks, I have it for the PSX, played on my PSOne (the smaller PSX) on my Trinitron, so it's not the fault of any hardware. The timing is literally just wrong.

The vocalist of Can in the 70's WAS Japanese ironically. I don't know too much about this but the cross-cultural pollination between Japan and the west has been thing for over a century know.

>The German translator for Nintendo was at Nintendo Japan and showed the music composer of Zelda link's awakening the music genre "techno" - that was in like 1992 when techno exists since the 80s but the Japanese music composer was unaware of that genre.

"Techno" doesn't really exist or at least was really hard to define at that point. It was right around the early 90's that the tropes became established which it is know known for. Basically a bunch Japanese electronic music gear came on the market in the early 80's, traditional musicians did not take a liking to it, the gear became cheap, people from Detroit and Chicago started making dance music with it, artist from the former city named the music "Techno", artist from the latter city named it "House" the names catched on even though the tracks were virtually indistinguishable from Electro and Disco most of the time. So it's not really weird he didn't know what Techno was, most people probably didn't.
