I had some nostalgic thoughts and I realized... aren't all the old adventure games just fueled by nostalgia? Which of them would you actually play today, if you haven't played them? In example, I used to love Broken Sword 1 & 2, or relatively unpopular adventure games like Nightlong (though the latter has very deep lore behind it - not the game, but why it seemed so appealing at the time), and of course all the Lucas Arts games.

But these days? Frankly, I don't think I would play anything except the first two Monkey Islands and pic related.

Not to me, I still love the adventure games from the 90s and appreciate its puzzles and settings. I also play modern adventure games, so It's not just 90s nostalgia, I like the genre.

The problem is that most adventure games are basically not worth playing, like you get the same experience watching one of those "full play through, no commentary". Probably easy to find for most of them.

They suck. You have to guess the asinine logic developers used (washing the carriage to summon rain, anyone?). I like the atmosphere and jokes and the characters in many classic LucasArts games but fuck, they are stupid to "play". It's much more enjoyable to just watch them being completed and you lose basically nothing. You arguably gain a lot from not being stuck in one place trying every item on everything for so long you forget what the plot was

depends on the game. i didnt grow up with pc gaming and i played day of the tentacle to completion recently for the first time, really fucking fun experience but the part i can get people grow to hate over time is the really asinine logic for how you solve the puzzles >>9237561

kek i completely glossed over how dumb of an example that was for him to give, the washing the carriage puzzle was pretty obvious especially since you can make soapy water and get a brush very easily. Hoagie was one of the easier characters.

Point and click adventure games "promised" more than they delivered, but I didn't know any better back then. To me, they felt like "immersive sims". Actual living breathing worlds where you can go anywhere and interact with everything and anything can happen.

Obviously, they're essentially powerpoint presentations with forward buttons disguised as more or less (usually less) enjoyable puzzles here and there.

So no, I have no desire to go back and play them now. The illusion is broken. But I did love them.

A lot of them have pretty cool settings and aesthetics but yeah I've never been able to get into them. I tried playing Grim Fandando a while ago but didn't get too far into it. The thing is there's a pretty thin line between point and clicks and full on puzzle games but for some reason their executions are worlds apart.

Like I know NOTHING about modern PNC games, maybe there are some good ones out there but I just don't know. To me old Lucas Arts games have that charm and quality of Lucas Games that can just not be replicated again. I know off Gilberts Timbelweed Park but that one fucking sucked dick.

I feel like the genre is too niche nowadays to put some actual effort into a game. Lucas games had a good team working on their games, such a luxury does not exist anymore plus humour died in 1999 so stuff is just not funny anymore, people are not funny anymore.
LSL7 and Monkey 3 still make me laugh today.

I'm playing through Day of the Tentical now. Got stuck for a couple hours because I didn't pick up that flyer in the basement. I had to look up what to do but now I am making progress again. It's fun when I am not stuck.

I've had a quite nice experience with the VGA remake of the first Space Quest, most item puzzles made sense, the things that i found most difficult were the ones that aren't found in Lucasarts adventure games like hiding behind stuff to avoid guards or waiting for the acid to stop dripping, it wasn't overly long either which is pretty cool, can't stand shit taking a lot of time and filling your inventory with +30 items.

I don't know why but I enjoyed the Chzo Mythos games more than half the adventure games that came before it (so the retro ones) and pretty much every single adventure game that came after it. Like genuinely can't think of a single good one that came out in 2007+.

I was cautiously optimistic, even after the 'controversy' over the objectively terrible artstyle and animation. Then I played Thimbleweed Park and read everything I could regarding Ron Gilbert's response to both it's and MI2's ending.

This is going to be a disaster. Ron deserves every shred of hate and criticism that's going to come his way. Fuck him.
