Last night i was playing some Dreamcast (specifically Illbleed). It got me thinking about this.
Do you also think retrogames have a core feeling of loneliness/emptiness to them? The feeling of walking arounf scenarios most empty, with few details...
I made an experiment: Turned off my internet last night and just played the game, no phone, no nothing. Took me back two decades in time. A cozy sense of isolation.

Games that evoke this feeling also include Soul reaver and almost every Dreamcast game. Idk why

Whoa what happened when your phone turned off? Did it ever turn back on? How did you survive without internet for half an hour? That’s the real survival horror here.

Yes. The games are old, few people play them these days. Lots of people who made them were young at the time but are either dead now or old as fuck. They're like relics of a bygone era. The consoles are not connected to the internet.

It's relaxing for me. They feel like a time capsule. It feels like slipping into a world that's my own and only for me.

Sad to see a potential good thread be stormed by niggers.

Quite the opposite. Back then we had actual multiplayer games, with split-screen games with flesh and blood human beings. Not just online echo chambers of screaming toddlers like you.

Also, Turn off your microchip you fucking zoomer. The matrix has you..

>actually defending the retard OP
Everyone and their dog knows that older games ran on less powerful systems meaning the devs couldn't just cover their worlds with setpieces and characters, making older games seem "empty" or "lonely" compared to the newer crap OP is used to. He fucking acts like turning off the internet and not touching his phone for a couple hours is some herculean task.
ADHD retard.

But where are those friends now? Can you play with them? That's the point, I believe

I still have my N64 and four controllers, but my friends have families and I only meet them occasionally. If I turn on Mario Party I'll be playing alone and it feels empty.

we've had this thread a million times in the past. it got old, and people started to recognise the pattern. basically threads like these are made by the same gen z faggots who obsess over "cursed media" and "liminal spaces"

This, except that most developers aren't THAT old yet...unless you're talking about Nolan Bushnell era dudes. I mean Miyamoto's almost 70, I wouldn't say that's ancient or on the cusp of death.

But it's true that you can look at the credits from any game from some random developer from the 80s or 90s and wonder "where is that programmer now?"

To me, retro games feel social. When I play them I imagine interacting in my head with anons on /v/, except they're friendly and supportive instead of cruel. When I die they post "keep going, you can do this I believe in you" instead of "git gud". It's a comforting feeling and has helped me to beat Castlevania

yeah, a big part of the attractiveness of retro games back in the day, was the loneliness of discovering something not many had, like you were not readily aware of millions of others playing the same game. Today, we have that nostalgia of exclusiveness of discovery when playing retro.

idk why you are getting shit on for a perfectly reasonable thread. yes, early 3d games definitely had this type of feel. a lot of it was probably intentional due to not having enough resources to litter pointless npcs everywhere that would sap precious processing power. there were tons of desolate survival horror games in this era, i have to wonder if that was part of the reason why.

that's the issue. Back then it was a world everyone else were exploring with you. You showed people. Everyone's eyes were glued to the screens featuring new 3d worlds. Now no one cares, you're playing it strictly for the sake of nostalgia. There's no way to feel that connection anymore

When I play old games I don't feel emptiness, isolation, etc. I feel exactly the same as a kid. Even when I play old games I have never played, I just feel satisfaction. You retards need to fix your fucking lives and stop playing for nostalgia. I play old videogames because I find them superior, not to revive my childhood.
Stop associating you emotions with videogames.

I did something similar a few years ago OP, only it wasn't for an evening but just over six months. Canceled my home internet and downgraded to a dumbphone that could only call and text, no browser or email etc. It was extremely painful (4u) at first; despite having grown up in the 80s and 90s without this stuff I had become as completely dependent on the digital dopamine pump as any zoomer. I literally found myself pacing around the house and talking to myself quite a bit at first, unsure what to do with the time. After a few days i decided I needed a project or two, so I chose to learn car repair and fix up a 20 year old junker Honda Civic i had access to and to start beating the old video games I had carts/cds for but never got around to. Long story short, it was an extremely productive six months and I felt like a real human being again.
Then I decided I was ready to go back online and soon found myself right back where I started- addicted, unmotivated, and in this shithole of a website once more.
The end.

Games feel more lonely now because of how isolated the sphere has gotten. A large chunk of MMO appeal used to involve talking and shitting around around with others because everyone was chill. Now, you log in and do you dailies and gather with your guild once a week for raids. If you talk to a stranger at any point you're classed as a weirdo and blacklisted. It's too streamlined. I blame Discord
