Out of curiosity, what are the reasons people dislike Brutal Doom? I really enjoy it myself, though I'm interested in hearing why a lot of people dislike it.
The only real problem I have with it is it's the one wad I always hear about, outside of these threads, I never would have discovered stuff like project msx, or russian overkill, as brutal doom was always the one to be getting the attention.

I thought watching the revenant pull off someone's head was funny in an online. Otherwise it's lame and it's everyone's "go to" mod. No idea why, either. No-one does. It's just the popularity phenomena.
People always say things like it's doom's rebirth and PC gamer said something like "how DOOM was probably imagined by id"
It's not that good, it's pretty mediocre. The fact there is so much gore you just can't see and I find it also slows the pacing down quite a bit. I couldn't like it.
I'd give it a 4.5/10 but I really feel like a 3 would be better. It's really nothing special at all.

I personaly don't hate it, but I don't think it' the best thing ever either.
The only thing that keeps me coming back to it is the gore and the melee combat, and the weapons. They feel really satisfying.

With that said, I don't like the increased dificulty of the monsters, as they make the more hardcore maps nearly unplayable. You can use the mutator to make them easier, but their projectiles are still powerful as fuck.
The voice acting of the advanced taunts and the flip off buttom sound retarded. This is a minor complain because I don't have to deal with it in single player, but people in multiplayer always make SURE to spawn the taunts as much as possible.
Also, those groin kicks. No, just no. There's badass cheesiness, and then there's just juvenile humor.

Yeah I feel the same way. I love the over the top gore, the amount of detail put into things (water/lava ripples, guts sticking and sliding down walls, etc), and the weapons, even if they're not properly balanced, feel really satisfying.
The sprite work is pretty fantastic too imo, I like that Mark made the weapon sprites himself, where as a lot of wads I've played weapons are sorta rotoscoped (for lack of better term) from other games, like project msx, which isn't a bad thing, but it's cool that he went to the trouble of making his own sprites, vs ripping it from another game or whatever.

But yeah, it's not the best thing ever. I've been really addicted to Russian Overkill lately, which has just been ridiculous amounts of fun, I hope there are more wads like it in the future.

I like the mod just fine, but only certain map choices really work with it. Most servers are co-op instead of survival which really makes it boring though. I wish that the rifle would have stayed semi auto though. The new taunts don't sound good and the whole seven rocket thing does make things kind of cheesy. However, people don't have to play it. Brutal Doom's highest difficulty is harder than normal UV. Pretty sure that monsters are at least as fast as vanilla with -fast, if not faster, and deal a shitton of damage. For example: Dead Simple is more or less a cakewalk for me on vanilla UV, but Brutal Doom kicks my ass really hard. I wouldn't dare to try something like Speed of Doom with it, it would be almost as impossible as Holy Hell.

In all honesty, Ultra Violence is still the go to for me in Brutal Doom. It's just difficult enough. I cleared doom 1, doom 2, Doom the Way Id Did, and Final Doom completely with brutal doom on UV. Tough as shit, but those maps actually work with the mod.

John Romero was a programmer and he had to deal with his own problems as well (i found it normal to be him not wanting to sticking up with doom forever).
Oblige can be really useful if you know how to use. But since it has banned in idgames it's not a too much problem as well.

It's pointless, a little weapon fix here and there is completely different. For example, GZDOOM Advanced, there's many versions of it. I have a hold of my favourite version which is old, all I did was fix a few bugs and make it compatible for the PlayStation DOOM mod.

Use more sector lighting and less colored fog, it also seems too dark so far. Take a leaf out of PlayStation DOOM. Don't forget to emulate it, not use the TC; the PlayStation DOOM TC is dark as shit and seriously, the original PS DOOM ain't no way near as dark.

I don't remember colored fog, only colored sectors. And it wasn't as dark as that. One thing I liked about DOOM 64 was the ambiance, it's a hell of a project to get right as it's completely up to interpretation. All I am advising on, even if you are not him, is less colored fog and a little brighter. I'm not saying to remove any form of darkness. It's not difficult to understand.

I just played epic2.wad with Weasel's Nazis! because it got recommended in the Nazis! readme for an "Indiana Jones feel", and I have to say, that's a pretty good description, and it's fun too. Killing Nazis in an Egyptian environment just feels so right. It's up there with the Teutonic as fuck castles and the Reichstag in terms of "good environments to kill Nazis in". I noticed something about PC DOOM.
Occasionally sounds get overridden by other sounds, obviously something to do with the channels. Anyway to change that?
For instance, if multiple monsters of the same kind are alerted at once, it only plays as one sound instead of multiplying it by how many monsters there are. It bugs me because I've been working on a weapon and I've noticed when it shoots, if I am close enough and multiple pellets hit, it either gets overridden by the shooting noise, or it only plays one pellet noise.

Maybe someone can help me but I recently got Brutal Doom+GZdoom. I have all the correct wads,and I created a skins folder for the Heavy Metal pack it works fine. My problem is I can't get NC/DE HUD mod to work no matter where I put it..it will not load when I start Brutal Doom.(Even in the skins folder)

i don't think those are good reasons to use it as a deathmatch map.

when i look at it, the first thing i notice is that none of the spawns have weapons on them, so you're going to have to run around searching for a weapon which, in free-for-all, is not fun.

the easiest available is the plasma gun under the crushers. the rocket launcher is in a dead end in a small building, the shotgun similar.

the super shotgun is up by the red key and can be reached quite easily if you use the big teleporter and run backwards and go through the blue door, but someone is going to sit in that room with the invulnerability and rack up kills on people coming through the door.

and that's to say nothing of powerups. whoever gets the invulnerabilities first is going to have a huge advantage. invulnerabilities in deathmatch maps are generally not a good idea.

the layout is okay, as you say it's nice and open and well interconnected - as long as people stay out in the open and try to kill each other, instead of being annoying and hiding in the buildings. which they will.

so, i just don't think it's a good FFA map. A good FFA map should have shotguns or super shotguns on all the spawns, a few rocket launchers in easy-to-reach places, and the plasma weapons in hard-to-reach places. (The BFG placement in map13 is a good example, as it needs a ledge run and fall that's easy to overshoot, and you're in full view of the map while you do it, so you're an easy target.)

anyway that's just what i think, and i'm not that experienced a deathmatcher. in particular i've never actually played map13 in FFA so i'll probably find most of my analysis is a load of horseshit, but this is 4chan and i'm going to post it anyway. :-)

Uh, well I've been working a recreation of this dream I had back in 2010. But I've been spending a lot more time thinking up technical things like monsters and weapons than I have thinking up the architecture.

It's hard trying to regain the exact feel of this dream. I tried writing down what I think I remember happening and analyzing things that could have happened that have escaped my memory. I tried studying the ambient sounds of my basement. I tried browsing photos of run-down industrial facilities. Anything to trigger a split-second memory of the dream or something. But it's almost impossible to get that specific feeling again, and once I do get something I usually get distracted by something else as I'm running to my computer/notebook and end up losing that feeling again.

Pic related. It's all I got so far. Just an incomplete elevator shaft and a small tunnel that leads nowhere.

Sure, I could just start making it up from scratch, but it would just feel artificial and would ultimately ruin the entire point of the WAD.

I actually put a stream up of how I did it on justin.tv, but the video auto deleted.

What I did was import the model in the 3Dcoat, and use its (great) retopology tools to draw a lower density mesh around the sculpt, then used maya to UV the mesh and bake normal maps from the high resolution mesh to the lower density mesh. Then rigged it in maya (quickly and cheaply- the baking and rigging videos are still on http://www.justin.tv/revaeravus, but I don't recommend using them for reference of how you should do it, just how it is generally done. Seriously, they're quick and dirty as fuck), Then painted weights, then posed.

Actually, I think the problem is more that Zandronum isn't quite up to date with ZDoom, so it misses out on all the coolest mods. Imagine how crazy Project MSX deathmatch would be, or how intense Hideous Destructor survival would be, or what a blast Reelism would be. Something's not quite right with this mod. This is the first one where I feel the reloading factor as a big disadvantage for the player.

Weapons are nearly decent at best (so far, the shotguns suck but the pistols not so much, the chaingun replacement is okay) and the reloading animations take too much and leaves you defenseless against the enemies (the shotgunners are nasty, and even I would say that are a bit overpowered) You MUST take cover when you're reloading or else you're pretty much fucked

As you can see it took me more than I would imagine to finish MAP02; if WildWeasel *really* wants to get this mod rolling just like ww-nazis, he MUST tweak the reloading mechanics and the animations and nerf the shotgunners.

That's my opinion, anyway, but feel free to test this weapon/monster mod if you want

I thought Sonderkommando Revolt was an awesome game concept that could have done a lot to show how games can teach about history, bring to light a lot of lesser-known incidents that might have been covered-up, forgotten about, or just plain don't have enough media attention.
