it's easy to beat if you don't give up. the key is you basically have to run through every level, if you try to take your time and be careful you're gonna get fucked. there are infinite continues. i'd beat it but I already have.

I beat this on SNES last month, took me 4 or 5 hours. I missed world 9 though (accidentally stumbled onto a warp pipe somewhere) so I’ll have to give it another go next year

That's why you play the All-Stars version with a romhack that fixes the block shit if you're that much of an autist. You also save yourself the tedium of getting the max lives trick just right.
