They're not even collectors anymore. When it was just collectors the prices could be high but they were stable. The giant spike in prices is from outside speculators from other hobbies like baseball cards and comic books looking for the next big thing. There was an article about a dentist who just got into it and clearly has no interest in gaming as a hobby. They're independently wealthy people who are willing to drop thousands on whatever they think will appreciate in value, which is how you get a sealed Super Mario 64 selling for a literal million dollars.

If you have a factory sealed box copy it will only go up in value, but if you have a used copy of N64 or Gamecube games it going be only be low prices for long time. If you still play your used copy games just hold on to it. Only hardcore collectors who buy sealed copy games now.

It's because the SNES version is rarer and in a more widespread language than the definitive Super Famicom version. And the DS and PS1 ports are so much worse that they're not worth playing

I sold all my expensive DS games last year because I noticed the carts starting to noticeably degrade.
hold onto your physical media for more money if you want, but keep in mind aging electronics and storage formats only have such a shelf-life before they become essentially pretty looking plastic trash.

its giving back.
people got to experience the games on real hardware and provide a resource for others born later, and then hopefully down the line the younger people who used emulators choose to keep them alive so people even younger than them have access to those games to.

I'm playing this for the first time right now, about 65% finished.

I'm playing the PS1 cd.. then got the SNES version.. and I'm too far in to switch to the SNES version with no load times.

When I open a menu or go into a room, I times a 7 second load time. I feel by the end I'll have lost a year of my life.

However I will say, I now see what the hype is all about.

I think you're right in the sense that a lot of these games are already very well preserved. It's hard to imagine someone having much difficulty finding Super Mario Bros. or Final Fantasy VII because there are copies everywhere now.
However, if you do happen to come across a game that's at risk, do your best to help share it. If you got it from a torrent, seed the torrent. If you got it from a direct download, share the link with other people who might be interested. If there isn't a good place to download it, make one yourself, either with a torrent or a website like Mega.

To give an example of a game at risk, I recently managed to get my hands on a copy of an obscure freeware fighting game called 少女魔法学園. Few physical copies were ever made, it doesn't work on modern versions of Windows, the company that made it (Tinkle Bell) doesn't make games anymore, the official website is down, and it's so obscure maybe only ten thousand people in the whole world have ever heard of it.
I only managed to find my copy by digging through an archive of 5ch where somebody had shared one. I handed out a copy to every person I could find online who ever expressed interest in the game, from Youtube comments to Twitter to 4chan. It didn't take long, and hopefully it really helped someone out.
Another example is a Japanese company called Inside-cap that made visual novel ports. All of their games were short run and had really really nasty copy-protection. The copies we have in this archive https://archive.org/details/gbaunlicensedroms99759998 may be the only extant working digital copies anywhere.
If you ever find a forgotten game or an obscure version or a game caught in copyright limbo or that's illegal to play in some parts of the world, sharing that game with other people who are interested in it could make a big impact for future generations. This goes for other media as well, books, movies, et cetera.
